2. Direct Stream (Minimal Processing by Server)
If the client supports the codec but not the container (e.g., MKV vs. MP4), the Plex server repackages the file without changing the video itself.
The client still does most of the work.
3. Transcoding (Heavy Processing by Server)
If the client cannot handle the video format, codec, resolution, or bitrate, the Plex server transcodes it into a compatible format.
This requires significant CPU or GPU power on the server.
Common when streaming to mobile devices, web browsers, or slow connections.
Conclusion
If the client supports the video, it plays it directly with no extra processing from the server.
If the client does not support the video, the server does the processing (transcoding) before streaming.
Running Plex Media Server on a Raspberry Pi can work well, but there are some limitations, especially when it comes to video processing.
How Plex Works on Raspberry Pi
1. Direct Play (Best Case for Raspberry Pi)
If the client supports the file format, the Raspberry Pi just streams the video without processing it.
This is the most efficient method and works well even on low-power devices like the Pi.
Example: Watching an H.264 MP4 file on a Smart TV that supports H.264.
2. Direct Stream (Minimal Processing)
If the client supports the video codec but not the container (e.g., an MKV file), the Pi repackages it without re-encoding the video.
This is slightly more demanding but still manageable.
3. Transcoding (Major Problem for Raspberry Pi)
Raspberry Pi struggles with transcoding because it has a weak CPU for this kind of processing.
Plex requires a powerful CPU or hardware acceleration (like Intel Quick Sync or an NVIDIA GPU) for smooth transcoding.
If a client (e.g., a phone or browser) requests a video format that needs transcoding, the Raspberry Pi will likely fail or stutter badly.
Optimizing Plex on Raspberry Pi
Stick to Direct Play: Ensure your media files are in a format your clients can play natively (H.264 MP4 is the safest).
Avoid Transcoding: In Plex settings, disable transcoding or set it to Make my CPU hurt -> Prefer higher quality encoding to prevent the Pi from struggling.
Use Hardware Acceleration (Limited): Newer Raspberry Pi models (like the Pi 4) support some hardware decoding, but Plex on ARM-based systems doesn’t support full hardware transcoding.
Alternative Solution
If you need transcoding, you might want to use a more powerful server (like a NAS or an Intel-based mini PC) instead of a Raspberry Pi. But if all your clients can Direct Play, the Raspberry Pi should work fine as a Plex server.

Nachelea kuamini kuwa pi ilikuwa inaprocess hizo video mkuu kwasababu tunaongelea 4K videos 10Mbps huko... Movie moja 6GB.
pi ya 15W iprocess hiyo video? 1GHz 2GB RAM? Nilishacode project moja ya video processing kwa ffmpeg na results zake nikaidrop mkuu... No juice. Nimeshatengeneza home security system running on raspberry pis / motioneyeos / motion daemon / ffmpeg... Ilibidi ni offload motion detection kwenda linux server... Na bado pi zinastream max 5fps.
