The Water Resource Management Authority has sounded an alert to those residing near the Turkwel Dam that due to ongoing heavy rains in the Mount Elgon escarpment the dam will spill anytime from next week. According to the authorities, water in the dam had reached a dangerous level of 1147.72 meters which is 8.48 meters above the ever highest level reached.
A high government delegation including Water Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki and governors from Turkana and West Pokot counties toured the area to sensitize members of the public on the impending danger. At risk of displacement are over 300,000 residents living downstream along the River Turkwel, the spillover expected to also affect residents of Katilu, Kalenyang, Loyapat, Nakwomoru, Lodwar and settlements along the shores of Lake Turkana. Various roads and bridges are also expected to be affected. Residents have since been urgeed to move to higher ground.
