PEOPLE aged over 50 should remain under lockdown for longer than younger Brits and fined if they can’t prove their age when they are out, experts claim.
Researchers at the University of Warwick believe a “rolling age-release strategy” to let younger people out earlier combined with social distancing is the safest way out of the UK’s lockdown.
Covid-19 deaths among 50-year-olds are 20 times higher than among 20-year-olds, with deaths among 60-year-olds about 50 times larger than with people in their early 20s, the study claims.
Older and middle-aged people should be kept in lockdown for longer as “younger people are far, far safer”.
The findings, reported by The Daily Telegraph, come as the UK’s official death toll rose from 21,678 to 26,097 after the inclusion of care home deaths in the government’s daily statistics for the first time.
Britain now has the second highest number of deaths in Europe behind only Italy, which has seen 27,682 deaths.
The University of Warwick researchers said: “Presumably, police officers would have to be given the right to fine those caught breaking the age rule,
“The vast majority of citizens in the UK carry driving licenses that would allow a police officer to check their date of birth. Most nations have something similar.
“A release of younger people might, we appreciate, cause resentment among those older than the age group released.
“Nevertheless, to reassure them, the older groups could be told when their turn would eventually arrive and they could be encouraged to check a Government-sponsored website detailing the exact risk by age pattern of the virus.”
