Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed that a North Korean battalion deployed to the Russian front near Kursk was wiped out over the course of two days.
According to Reuters on Jan. 4, Zelenskyy made the assertion during his nightly video address, reporting that Russian and North Korean troops suffered heavy losses in battles near the village of Makhnovka, close to Ukraine’s border. He cited Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, in his briefing.
“Over the past two days, near Makhnovka, Russian forces lost a battalion composed of North Korean infantry and Russian paratroopers,” Zelenskyy said. However, he did not provide additional details.
Reuters noted that battalion sizes can vary but typically include several hundred soldiers. It added that Zelenskyy’s claims could not be independently verified.
Reports from Ukraine and Western officials suggest that about 11,000 North Korean soldiers have been deployed to the Kursk region. These troops are reportedly struggling with heavy losses, facing unfamiliar battlefield conditions and inadequate support.
As of Dec. 23, more than 3,000 North Korean soldiers had been killed or injured, Zelenskyy claimed. He added that North Korean forces were not receiving adequate protection from their Russian counterparts and alleged that some North Korean troops were taking desperate measures to avoid being captured.
