Polls have opened in Siaya County by-election this in the Governor's race as well in Matungulu and Kibwezi constituency by-elections.

The voting exercise in the Siaya by-election kicked off this morning without any major hitches.

County returning officer Jackline Osiemo said all the 573 polling stations had received voting materials in good time and all of them opened their doors to voters at 6am.

Three candidates, Mr Cornel Rasanga (ODM), William Oduol (NAP-K) and an independent candidate Dr Winja Migudo are battling it out for the position that was made vacant by a High Court ruling which nullified Mr Rasanga’s election.

The County has six constituencies: Ugunja, Ugenya, Alego-Usonga, Rarieda, Gem and Bondo with a total of 311,919 registered voters.

In Matungulu, the battle is between between two political newcomers — Mr Stephen Mule of the Wiper Democratic Movement and Mr Tom Malinda Musau of the New Democrats — on one hand and veteran politician Moffat Maitha of the National Rainbow Coalition (Narc) on the other.

The seat began vacant after a successful poll petition by Mr Tom Malinda Musau of the New Democrats party

Mr Mule was elected in the March poll as the first MP for Matungulu constituency.

A petition was filed soon after his victory by Mr Musau. High Court judge Hellen Mutende nullified his election, prompting the by-election.

The Kibwezi by-election pits two front-runners, Dr Patrick Mweu Musimba, and Mr Richard Kalembe Ndile.

Mr Ndile contested the election of Mr Musimba in a four-month legal tussle at the Machakos High Court.

A recount was done on orders from Mr Justice David Majanja and as found that Mr Ndile had beaten Dr Musimba by a slim margin.

However the court ordered a by election, instead of giving outright victory to Mr Mdile.

The voting exercise in the three by-elections is expected to end at 6pm.
