Port of Mombasa vs Port of Dar es Salaam

Efficiency and productivity at the Port of Mombasa is expected to further improve following the acquisition of four new Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) cranes and two Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes. The four RTGs are part of the 12 RTGs that the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) ordered from Toyota Tshusho of Japan. The first consignment (8 RTGs) was received on 21st April 2018. Similarly, the two RMGs are part of the six that the Authority ordered from ZPMC of China. The remaining four RMGs are expected towards the end of June 2018. One RTG costs Kshs 185 Million while each RMG is Kshs 355 Million. The main features of the RTGs are; hybrid power system- resulting into improved fuel efficiency of up to 50% and reduced carbon emissions; advanced crane monitoring system; installed accurate container load weighing system; safe working load of 45 tons; stacking height of five plus one high; width of 6 plus one truck lane and automatic steering. On the other hand the RMGs main features include; safe working load of 65 tons; two twenty foot containers (twin lift) capability; span of 40 meters and outreach of six meters (this shall enable the cranes serve 3 SGR and 3 MGR railway lines); stacking height is 5 plus one container; 180O trolley rotation mechanism to enable turning of containers; advanced crane monitoring system with remote access and installed accurate container load weighing system. The cranes will be commissioned in a month’s time after offloading and assembling of the loose parts.

Head of Container Terminal Engineering Eng. Julius Tai briefing the Press on the arrival of two new Rail Mounted Gantry Cranes (RMGs) at the Port of Mombasa, berth no. 17. He is flanked by the Head of Container Terminal Operations Mr. Edward Opiyo (Left) and some engineering staff. The cranes are part of the six RMGs that the Authority ordered for in December 2016 at a total cost of Kshs 2.12 billion. It took the manufacturer, ZPMC Ltd of the Republic of China 13 months to build the cranes and one month to ship them from China to Kenya. The new RMGs have a span of 40 meters with an outreach of 6 meters. The cost of each RMG is Kshs 355 million. These RMGs will be installed at the site where we have the existing RMGs. They will serve both the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) trains. The remaining RMGs have a span of 35 meters with no outreach. These ones will serve only the SGR. The cost of each of this type of RMG is Kshs 345 million. The RMGs will be installed at the new RMG area adjacent to berth 12 to 14. The RMGs are expected later towards the end of next month. Offloading of the two RMGs that were received today is expected to commence tomorrow and it will take four days to offload and pull to the RMG area which is 200 meters from the berth.
