Pre-Shipment verification of Conformity to Standards (PVOC) has proved to be an effective tool towards addressing the influx of substandard goods into the Tanzanian market outlets.
Deputy Minister for Industries and Trade, Gregory Teu, made the remark yesterday in parliament where he asserted that since PVOC commenced back in February last year, it has recorded a considerable count of successes and of these as cited by the minister is the fact that for the last 12 months, the number of goods waiting to be inspected at the Dar es Salaam Port has reduced to minimal level.
We have also witnessed a decrease in the number of fake goods plunging into our market outlets... he added.
He was adamant on the question of fake goods saying the country is not a dumping site for substandard goods reminding members of the house that substandard goods reduce competitiveness against other importers.
He also stated that the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS), through its agencies now gets opportunity to inspect all goods while abroad without considering that the goods are in red, green and yellow channels.
We have also witnessed increasing number of goods with certification until November, 2012, about 16,946 of goods were certified this is a good start as in the previous we had very low statistics said the minister but no specifics as to last years statistics were provided.
Tanzania is among some 188 countries implementing PVOC Worldwide and in Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Zambia and Nigeria are some of the countries using then system.
The minister was responding to a question by Konde MP, Khatibu Said Haji, who had wanted to know the achievement of PVOC since implementation. The MP also wanted to know what other countries are using the system.
