CRISTIANO RONALDO and Ryan Giggs got the goals that confirmed Manchester United as Premier League champions.
The Portuguese ace coolly slotted home a 34th-minute penalty after Emmerson Boyce had brought down Wayne Rooney. And Giggs eased United's nerves with 10 minutes remaining when he poked home from close range.

Steve Bruce's Wigan had been tipped to roll over against their boss' old club. But within minutes of the start it was evident United would have a battle on their hands with secure the title.
Emile Heskey was a particular thorn in the side of defenders Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

United transfer target Antonio Valencia also showed flashes of inspiration from the flanks. But Michael Brown, Jason Koumas and Marcus Bent all failed to convert half chances. And the Latics were punished when Emmerson Boyce brought down Wayne Rooney in the box on 32 minutes. Ronaldo stepped up and confidently converted to equal Alan Shearer's Premier League best goal haul of 31.

The Portugal winger is still to produce the one stand-out performance on a day of high importance that will silence his remaining critics. Wigan had a couple of penalty shouts but referee Steve Bennett waved away both claims. United hit back and began the second-half like champions. Kirkland denied a thunderous Ronaldo free-kick and goalbound efforts from Rooney and Carlos Tevez. United could have been awarded a second penalty for Titus Bramble's lunge on Scholes.

They were denied and with Chelsea taking the lead through Andriy Shevchenko at Stamford Bridge, United were in for a nervous final 10 minutes. But sub Ryan Giggs sealed the victory and the title when his latched on to Rooney's pass and fired home.

ManYoo Livid Over Fixture `Disgrace`
Posted 17/06/08 09:17

The Premier League has been branded a 'disgrace' for refusing to favour Manchester United when compiling the 2008/09 fixture list.

The Premier League champions will have to play an away fixture on all six of the weekends that follow group matches in next season's Champions League, prompting MUTV pundit Paddy Crerand to denounce the governing body as "not giving a s**t about Manchester United". Described, somewhat generously, as a 'respected media pundit' by the newspaper, Crerand fumed to The Sun: "Every other country seems to do everything to help their teams in Europe when it comes to domestic fixtures.

''But not here - and it is a disgrace. United are representing this country abroad in the biggest club tournament in the world, yet the fixture list works against them." A League spokesman responded last night by asserting: "We have 20 members and have to be fair to all of them. We can't treat the Champions League teams differently or the teams in the UEFA Cup. Everyone has equal standing."

Who wants to be favoured? ... ...I wonder!

Arsenal offload Ade ......
BARCELONA claim they have agreed a £22.5million deal with Arsenal for Emmanuel Adebayor.

Nou Camp officials have been in talks with the striker’s representatives about a move. And the Togo ace said on Friday he expected his future to be sorted out ‘in the next few days’. Gunners chief Arsene Wenger had warned his top scorer was not for sale.

But Barca are adamant an agreement is in place with both club and player.
Newcastle’s Obafemi Martins or Russia’s Andrei Arshavin could replace him.

Arsenal left-back Gael Clichy has stunned Roma and Juventus by signing a new four-year contract.

IN DEMAND ... Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor must decide whether to stay at Arsenal this summer

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR'S Arsenal future is shrouded in mystery after he revealed some of Europe's biggest clubs want to sign him.
The striker, 24, had claimed he would see out the remaining three years of his contract. But Gunners fans were stunned when he backtracked by admitting he is yet to agree a new deal at the Emirates.

Adebayor will meet boss Arsene Wenger for crunch contract talks next week — with both AC Milan and Barcelona waiting to swoop. The Togo international said: "A lot of clubs are interested in me, so at the moment we are going to sit down and talk and we will decide what to do. "I have three years left at Arsenal but I have a lot of clubs who are interested in me.
"It will be decided next week."

Speaking earlier today, Adebayor pledged his future to Wenger's side.
He said: “I am an Arsenal player and have three years left on my contract.
"The most important thing for me is to keep on enjoying my football. I'm staying at Arsenal." Adebayor also claimed his decision to remain in London had nothing to do with money. He added: “When I was young I had a dream to be a good footballer and play for a big team. “I was born in Togo so I never cared about playing for money, my happiness was to play to enjoy myself. That’s what I’ve been doing until now.

“You can see people changing clubs because of money, because they want a change of atmosphere or to get their names in the big leagues. "I just play football to enjoy myself. I play because I love it.” Serie A giants Milan have previously claimed they will swoop for Adebayor, 24, if they fail to snap up Ronaldinho. The Italians are battling it out with Chelsea and Manchester City to sign the Brazilian superstar.

Chief executive Adriano Galliani said: “There is a 'yes' from coach Carlo Ancelotti to go for the Brazilian. “It’s Ronaldinho or Adebayor. Buying one excludes taking the other.”

His time in English football may be at an end, for now at least. Yet Jose Mourinho has had his say on who he sees as the leading lights in the Premier League.

And in dismissing Arsenal as contenders he may well have annoyed old adversary Arsene Wenger especially as he sees Tottenham possibly usurping their North London rivals.

Mourinho backed Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool to challenge for the title this season but has discounted Arsenal as title contenders.

He said: 'I would put Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool as favourites again to win the Premier League.

'I see nobody else to win the Premier League, but Tottenham surely have the quality to fight for a top-four finish.'

Mourinho left Chelsea in September last year after three years at Chelsea in which he grasped the title from the grip of Wenger before conceding it to Manchester United. Relations with Wenger were rarely cordial during that time. Though Mourinho, speaking to Ford's Feel Football website, was referring to an Arsenal squad that has lost players of the quality of Matthieu Flamini, Alexandr Hleb and Gilberto said: 'Regarding Arsenal, they also have a great team, but I'm not sure if the group have enough experience and quality to win.'

Asked how Chelsea successor Luiz Felipe Scolari would fare in his first season in England, Mourinho warned the new Blues boss would be expected to hit the ground running.

He continued: 'Phil Scolari has not made a lot of changes since he arrived at the club.

'He has kept the same structure, the same system and the same football. He is a good leader, and he can do very well.

'The only insight or advice I would give him ahead of his first season is that he is in a club that is ready to win.'

And Mourinho had comforting words for the frustrated fans of Newcastle United: 'I cannot really say who the surprise team will be - but year after year we always wait for a better Newcastle.

'They are a top club, they have huge support and they have good players, so we wait for more from them.'
