EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR'S slick double put Arsenal back on top of the Premier League. The Gunners' top scorer struck early and late with the 20th and 21st goals of his superb season as City's slump continued. Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger raved: "When the team plays well Adebayor scores.

He is outstanding at the moment and we need him in this form." Adebayor, though, praised his side's graft as much as their craft. He said: "We knew the game was going to be tough and difficult and you could see that. "We are pleased with the performance. They played quite well and have a lot of talented players.

"When we scored the second goal you thought the game was finished but they made it difficult. But we responded very well. " The in-form striker slotted home via a slight deflection when Bacary Sagna's surging run teed up the Gunners' first attack on nine minutes. Eduardo provided the classiest moment of the day with a smooth turn and brilliant over-the-shoulder second goal. But Fernando Gelson sidefooted an instant reply on 28 minutes after Vedran Corluka robbed the dozing Gael Clichy.
The home side, though, rarely threatened from that moment.

And, though City improved after the break, their toothless raids contrasted with Arsenal's series of menacing breaks. Flamini and Adebayor missing the clearest of the visitors' decent chances on the break. But it was Adebayor who thumped the Gunners' 88th minute clincher after Sven Goran Eriksson's men gave Alexsandr Hleb far too much space down the right. Wenger said: "We had a good start and went 2-0 up but lost concentration and eased up and were punished when they made it 2-1.

"We have good confidence within the side because we know how we want to play." City chief Eriksson said: "I am disappointed because we allowed them to go 2-0 up and in the first 20 minutes we gave them too much respect. "Maybe we were a bit nervous but early on we did not compete and there was only one team in the match. "Once they were two goals up they could take it a bit easy and play on the counter-attack. "We have to learn quickly and wake up and do better because we desperately want to play in Europe next season."

Munich date derby angers Ferguson

MUNICH-MINI_431561a.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson has criticised the decision to stage Sunday's Manchester derby in the same week as the 50th anniversary of the Munich air crash. Concerns have been raised that a small minority of fans will not honour the minute's silence at Old Trafford.

Ferguson said: "When I saw the fixture at the start of the season I said 'Who the hell chose that (date)?'. "It puts pressure on the clubs," said the Man Utd boss who has played a big role in the Munich commemorations. "We could easily have had Middlesbrough at home or something like that," he told the Sunday Express. "There was no opportunity given to change it. I hope it's a good game, the crowd have a part to play in that."
The Red Devils have been honouring the eight 'Busby Babes' who died on 6 February 1958 alongside 15 other passengers, including former Man City goalkeeper Frank Swift, all week.

City officials, including manager Sven-Goran Eriksson, have appealed for their fans to respect the pre-match silence, and both teams will play in traditional, unsponsored jerseys to honour the occasion.

On Wednesday, a memorial service was held inside Old Trafford as well as the crash site, while the club unveiled a permanent exhibition of the Busby Babes in the South Stand tunnel.
"I have always been proud to be manager of this club and on Wednesday I was even prouder," said Ferguson following Wednesday's events.

"It made me realise I was the manager of one of the greatest clubs of all time. "I hope we put in a very good performance on Sunday. It goes hand in hand with the memory of the Munich disaster." Veteran Reds midfielder Paul Scholes hopes any City fans tempted to disrupt the silence will recognise that the Munich tragedy also touched their club.

"City lost someone in the accident as well," he said, referring to Swift, who was working as a journalist at the time of the crash. "So I hope their fans are not disrespectful. "There is always that few who might cause problems. They have referred to the accident a few times in the past and I just hope they come to their senses on the day. "It would reflect badly on their club, but that's not stopped them in the past, has it?"
City boss Eriksson added his voice to those calling for supporters to behave appropriately despite the always-intense derby atmosphere.

"As a club, we have sent out many messages and we hope fans use common sense," he said. "Football is one thing, but when people die too early in an extremely bad accident, you have to respect that. "It doesn't matter if you are wearing a blue shirt or a red shirt - it has nothing to do with football. We have to respect those who were doing the same job as we are doing today.
"It's sad and it should be respected. Don't be a fan for that minute. After that, normal service. I really hope our reputation is still very good after the match."

CITY SLICKER .... Darius Vassell celebrates his opener at Old Trafford

Mandeep Sanghera said:
Manchester United suffered a setback to their title hopes as they were beaten by derby rivals Manchester City.

A poignant minute's silence and tribute to the Munich air disaster victims took place before a game which saw Darius Vassell's strike put City ahead. United became stifled by a staunch City side who extended their lead with a glanced Benjani Mwaruwari header.

United struggled overall but got a consolation goal when Michael Carrick shot into the corner in injury-time. The hugely emotive occasion had begun in moving scenes at Old Trafford in respect to the 23 - of which eight were players from the Old Trafford club - who died in the Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958.

United's players adorned 1958-style sponsorless red shirts numbered one to 11 as City also wore special shirts. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson and counterpart Sven-Goran Eriksson each laid a wreath either side of the centre circle before an impeccably observed minute's silence.

The disruption to the silence feared beforehand did not materialise and, instead, both camps joined as the city came together to produce a touching tribute before the game got underway. United appeared in determined mood and quickly set about City and put the visitors on the backfoot.

A piercing Nani ball found Carlos Tevez and he crossed to the far post for the unmarked Giggs, whose acute-angled strike was tipped over by keeper Joe Hart. City slowly began to gather themselves but were given another scare when Micah Richards was outpaced by Tevez only for fellow centre-back Richard Dunne to retrieve the situation by blocking the United striker's shot.

Richards survived a handball shout just outside the City area before the visitors broke United's early grip. Martin Petrov slid a defence-splitting pass into run of Stephen Ireland's clever run and his poked shot was blocked by on-rushing keeper Edwin van der Sar.

The ball fell to Vassell and he powered in at the second attempt after his first strike is blocked by Van der Sar. A Tevez turn and shot was parried away by Hart, Cristiano Ronaldo had a shot deflected wide by Dunne and Nemanja Vidic poked as United attempted to equalise. But City were disciplined and organised as they kept United, who seemed to get more affected by the occasion after going behind, at bay and shocked them again with a second on the stroke of half time.

Left-winger Petrov was a constant threat to United with his pace and delivery and he crossed from the right for Benjani to glance in a header in across goal. Didier Hamann had a sweetly struck half-volley saved immediately after the break but City sat back as they soaked up the pressure and tried to catch United out on the counter-attack.

Richards and Dunne were immense for City at the back as they refused to give an out-of-sorts United any kind of sight on goal with a powerful performance. Giggs did get rare chance for the home side but his angled shot went wide as United's threat decreased as the game wore on and any expected pressure did not materialise.

Carrick's consolation strike came to late for United as City completed the first league double over their arch-rivals for the first time since the 1969/70 season.
