President Kenyatta to visit China next week

Tuesday, August 13, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY STAR REPORTER

President Uhuru Kenyatta will make his first state visit to China from August 18 to 23.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the state visit follows an invitation by Chinese President Xi Jingping.

It coincides with the commemoration of the Jubilee anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kenya and China in 1963.
During the visit, President Kenyatta will hold bilateral talks with his host President Jingping and other leaders of the Government of China.

President Kenyatta and President Jingping are expected to discuss ways of improving Kenya's infrastructure and interconnectivity, tourism, deepen trade and economic relations, peace and security in the region. They will also explore how Kenya and China could cooperate more closely in international issues of mutual interest.

Various agreements to support development initiatives and implementation of Vision 2030 flagship projects are expected to be concluded during the visit. These include enhancement of diplomatic contacts, deepening cooperation in financial, agricultural and environmental sectors.

The two leaders will take the opportunity to further advance the gains realized under the Forum on Africa –China Cooperation (FOCAC). While in China, President Kenyatta will meet prospective Chinese investors, keen to expand Chinese investment in Kenya.

I think this trip starts with Russia where the president will on Thursday the 15th be around to watch the finals of the 3000m steeple chase.

Uhuru to lead Kenya

So, which International community was referred when they said Kenyatta is not well accepted by the international community?

One wonders. Some people here even claimed that Uhuru had been refused to visit by both Russia and China. What do they have to say now? That he has bribed his way? Nkt!

Probably by "international community" they meant USA alone.

Probably by "international community" they meant USA alone.

I think so, people forget that there are other major players in the international arena. Even the US is now losing out in many areas except military.

NAIROBI - Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta says he plans to spur investment in the country's burgeoning oil and mineral industries and to secure funds for infrastructure development on his first official visit to Russia and China.
Kenya wanted to strengthen ties with the two countries, which are part of the emerging market Brics group along with Brazil, India and South Africa, as it sought "to grow new markets that focus on the East", a government statement said on Wednesday.
Mr Kenyatta, who the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague has indicted, has undertaken only one other trip outside Africa, to the UK for a conference on Somalia.
"Kenyatta's government is keen on attracting more foreign direct investment," Robert Bunyi, MD of Nairobi-based Mavuno Capital, said on Thursday. "They believe that will happen if they work on reducing the cost of doing business, particularly of (that of) power and improving transport.
"These are things they need to do quickly and partnering with Brics countries gives them a better opportunity at achieving that sooner rather than later."
Kenya is trying to leverage its natural resources to accelerate economic growth, which is now mainly dependent on exports of tea, coffee and horticulture as well as tourism. The country's first crude deposits, which have been discovered since last year, may enter initial production as early as next year.
Kenya earlier this month announced an overhaul of the mining industry, including a rise in royalty payments, drilling charges and leasing fees for mining acreage. It cancelled at least 43 exploration and mining permits pending a probe into reports of irregularities in the process of granting them before and after national elections in March.
The government is further seeking financing for a $2.5bn standard-gauge railway from the port of Mombasa to Uganda and a $1.8bn dam.
"African countries are finding it faster to get money from these countries and quicker to implement projects they are funding," Mr Bunyi said.
Kenya's main trading partners last year, by value of imports and exports, were India, the European Union, China, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
Mr Kenyatta said last month increasing trade with other African nations would be a key objective of his foreign agenda.

Uhuru woos fertiliser, oil investors

President Uhuru Kenyatta is using his visit to Moscow to market Kenya's key growth projects to the Russian business community as the two countries seek to establish stronger trade ties.

Meeting with members of the Russian chamber of commerce and industry on Friday, the President appealed to the investors to broaden their interests in Kenya's developing economy.

"Our country has emerged as the regional economic, trading and investment frontier. I welcome you to take advantage of our strategic location as the gateway to the East African Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa – which has a combined market potential of more than 400 million people," Mr Kenyatta said.

Among the key areas which the President requested support is the fight against food insecurity by encouraging Russian manufacturers and exporters to continue supplying high quality fertiliser to Kenya in the short-term.

"It would be mutually advantageous to partner with us in establishing a fertiliser plant in Kenya. Our current needs are around 500,000 metric tonnes per year. The requirements are higher if the target is the greater East African market," he noted.

The meeting was attended by the Russian chamber of commerce and industry vice-president Georgy Petrov, investors and ambassadors from Africa.

The recent discovery of commercially viable oil in Kenya also took centre stage in the talks with the President asking Russian investors to explore opportunities in the country's developing oil and gas industry.

"There are other opportunities in Kenya, particularly in the energy sector as you may be aware, we have struck oil that is commercially viable and in technology, infrastructure and tourism. I would be happy if you expressed an interest in investing in these sectors," he said.

Mr Petrov underlined the need and commitment of the Russian government to enhance trade between the two nations.

"With an annual turn-over of about $200 million, trade between Kenya and Russia does not presently reflect the optimal potential," he said.

Last year, a Kenyan delegation headed by then Energy minister Kiraitu Murungi visited Russia and inked a memorandum of understanding to cooperate in exploration and developing the nascent oil sector.

Russia is an economic powerhouse and one of the largest producers of oil and gas in the world.

Mr Kenyatta also appealed to Russian business community to consider investing in ongoing infrastructure projects, highlighting the Lamu Port for South Sudan and Ethiopian Transport corridor (Lapsset) and the African land bridge project that seeks to link the harbour ports of Douala in Cameroon and Lamu in Kenya.

"These projects involve the construction of resort towns, pipelines, railway lines and major roads. They are a great opportunity for you," he said.

While lauding Russia for being one of the largest importers of Kenyan teas, Mr Kenyatta urged the country's business community to explore ways of increasing the market share of local tea, high quality coffee, vegetables and flowers.

BEIJING; CHINA - August 19, 2013

Kenya signed agreements worth $5 billion (Sh425 billion) with China on Monday, on the day President Uhuru Kenyatta was accorded a formal welcome including a 21-gun salute at the Great Hall of the People, the most iconic building in China.

Some $4 billion covered economic partnerships, wildlife protection, and the standard gauge railway linking the port of Mombasa and the border town of Malaba, which President Uhuru Kenyatta said would provide better access to markets to goods from Kenya as well as Uganda Rwanda, Burundi andeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Another $1 billion was for energy-related projects.

The agreements were a massive boost to the Jubilee Government, which has pledged to improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans through better service delivery that is underpinned by increased investments in all sectors ofthe economy.

“These agreements deepen our practical cooperation,” President Xi told President Uhuru shortly before the agreements were signed adding that China supports Kenya’s quest for industrialisation.

President Xi said China was also exploring other areas of investment, including in agribusiness, irrigation, fertiliser production and purchases, and technology.

President Xi said China would also support Kenya’s plans to host a clearing house for the Chinese renminbi currency in Nairobi – greatly boosting the Kenyan capitals credentials as a leading financial hub.

“We welcome the investment in key sectors of our economy. The rail link, particularly, is important in the context of East Africa’s shared goal of ensuring quicker movement of peoples, goods and services,” President Kenyatta said.

Presidents Xi and Uhuru pledged to increase contact between China’s ruling party and Kenya’s ruling Jubilee coalition.

They agreed that party-to-party contact was essential to bolster political and economic partnerships.
