Government has been asked to abandon pushing for construction of standard gauge railway but instead rehabilitate the old internal railways system.

This comes at the time when Uganda has not yet started construction of its eastern line running from Malaba to Kampala, about 273km which is expected to cost Shs8 trillion yet Kenya has finished its 266km line from Naivasha to Kisumu Port at Shs13 trillion.

Speaking to Kfm, Dr Fred Muhumuza a renowned economist said that this project seems not to be forthcoming and thus all efforts should be re-channeled to internal rail system to ease the problem of transport.

He said that transport costs is still a problem that needs urgent attention and it’s better to address it now.

I think for a small country like Uganda developing a rail network has to be regionally coordinated because only then will it make economic sense.
The story for Tanzania and Kenya is different.

Mbona ninyi mumeshindwa kujenga hata nusu kilometer ya reli kwa pesa yenu, kila kitu mikopo hadi mnadhalilishwa huko nje.
 
Am starting to wonder how beneficial and viable these Mega SGR railways are, most will be used by the Chinese to carry away raw materials and bring finished goods killing our industries.

Unless we can build factories in the interior to produce goods and the trains used to transport raw materials to them and carry finished products to the coast for export we will spend our lifetime paying the heavy loans and burdens that come with them.

This applies to Ug,Tz and Ke no one will escape

-SGR Tz tender ilitangazwa na watu wakashindana, hii inakuhakikishia ubora na gharama kuwa fair.
-Ujenzi unafanywa kuzingatia maslahi mapana ya sasa na baadae e.g matumizi ya train za umeme badala ya diesel, rail track kuwa continous welded e.t.c
-Taasisi zinazo ikopesha Tz zina uzoefu kukopesha miradi yenye manufaa na ambayo ipo viable tofauti na mikopo ya China ambayo imelalamikiwa sana duniani.
-Asilimia ya deni kwa pato ghafi bado stahimilivu Tz kuliko Ke.
-SGR ya Tz itazigusa nchi nyingi zaidi (Rw,Ug,Br na Congo) hii ni moja ya sababu upatikanaji wa fedha unaeza usiwe mgumu sana.
-Uchumi wa Tz ni moja kati ya uchumi unao kuwa kwa kasi zaidi Duniani na reli ni muhimu sana kwenye sera ya viwanda ambayo serikali ya Tz inajitahidi kuishi ili kufikia malengo ya 2025. Bila kusahau Tz inaongoza kwa kupokea FDI katika ukanda huu kwa miaka zaidi ya 7 mfululizo.

Ukiangalia hayo yote, jumlisha amani na ile hali ya Magu kukemea matumizi ya pesa ovyo ovyo tofauti na Jirani zetu ambao bado wizi umetamalaki una eza pata picha ya wapi Tz inaelekea kwenye issue ya SGR.

Kumira kumira and thurakus should stick to the jubilee script. Tz is a different ball game, the have mines for graphite, copper gold concentrates that can be trasported to their commercial capital -Dar and etheir processed in their SEZ's Or exported as raw material

I agree, TZ seems to have gotten a better deal, but we are waiting to see if the financiers will keep their word.
The Kenyan SGR was over-prized, most Kenyan experts agree, mostly due to need for kickbacks by greedy politicians..

But the payment part is where another trick lies. Kenyans will be taxed to the end and revenue from the Cargo operations will be taken by the Chinese, whereas TZ are pegging their hopes on the minerals they have. Lets hope all goes well.
