President Sahlework Zewde of Ethiopia during the State banquet in honour of her official state visit to Burundi said : “The ties that unite our two countries are very strong and date back to the independence of Burundi. We haven’t worked much on it, so the purpose of this visit is to strengthen those ties. And for that, we have to see each other meet, talk to each other and identify the files that we must deal with together” .

Top on the list of priorities include the surplus energy that the Renaissance Dam, a large Ethiopian project on the Blue Nile, intends to generate.

Burundi suffers from a gross energy deficit and has turned to Ethiopians that are expected to produce thousands of Mega Watts of electricity from the controversial and inspirational grand renaissance dam.

Burundi planned to buy 200 MW and this energy would be transported via the regional interconnection called “Eastern Power Pool”, from Rwanda.

“I intend to take advantage of these two days that I will spend here in Bujumbura to lay the foundations for strengthening our bilateral ties, ” the Ethiopian President said after arriving on Tuesday in this much isolated country.

The Ethiopian President pointed out that relations between Burundi and her country date back to independence.

Zewde also pointed out what the objectives of the law enforcement operation undertaken by the Ethiopian government in Tigray are and how the rehabilitation, peacebuilding and humanitarian assistance are progressing in that northern region.

The two presidents also agreed to increase economic cooperation, mainly in trade, investment, aviation and livestock, improve the strategic partnership and hold the next meeting of the joint ministerial commission in March or April 2021.

After the meeting, Magufuli said that about 1,789 Ethiopian citizens imprisoned for illegally entering Tanzania will be pardoned, and assured they will be released and safely taken to their country in the coming weeks.
