Real Madrid (‎Los Blancos) | Special Thread

Pablo Laso gave a press conference at the Palacio at the end of the game and was extremely satisfied with the title won against Olympiacos:

“I am very happy for the team because they deserve it; for my work group, who are as important as Nocioni; for the fans because they are the ones who drive us on by always supporting us; anf for the club, because we know the demands of Real Madrid and it is not easy. Let's enjoy it and not change".

"Firstly, I am very happy for the players because they did an excellent job all throughout the year, overcoming obstacles such as injury. Despite everything, we have stuck together and that is what I ask for in game. It means a lot when you have players who are stars. For me, all 13 players are stars but you have to form a team. That is what I have done, ever since I took on the Real Madrid job, form a team. History is all fine and well but we are champions of Europe now and that makes us happy".

Pride
“I said it yesterday. I am not the type of person who go overs what happens in their head a lot. You have to get up again after a defeat. It has been a long road to get here. I will remember the final but also the day to day work. Losing two finals was difficult but when you look back you feel prouder of the players. Some have said 'thanks Pablo' but it should be me saying thanks to them for having shown the enthusiasm to win".

Carroll's Moment
“He was key. You can talk about a lot of things in a game like defence or rebounds. We had lost our attacking spark and what we are at that moment and he gave it back to us. We woke up again".

Significance of the title
“I talk a lot about the team and I consider myself to be another team member for good and bad. On a personal level, I am very conent and happy to win this title. It is a form of recognition that I value as much as every day recognition. I am the same now as I was five hours ago, a year ago, and now I am European champion and I have conveyed that a number of times to my players".

New additions
"Teams change, players leave, some who want to leave and others who can't stay. That is professional sport. However, the most important thing for me is to have a team. That takes time. However, they have shown heart from the first day and that heart and body has been shown for a long time. Today the Euroleague MVP is a player whose greatest talent may be his heart. I am delighted for him and for the team, they have continued to grow and improve. I am also delighted for the new players who have been extremely important in winning the title".

“My aim with Real Madrid, from the beginning, was to give them the value that is associated with Real Madrid basketball. I grew up watching Luyk, Emiliano and Corbalán play. I have been a part of this club and I know what it conveys. For me, it was important to be a recognised and recognisable teal, that is more important than titles, although at Real Madrid you are obliged to fight for every title. I am happy because my personal targets have gradually been met".

Clean sweep
“We have won the four competitions that we have played in since I've been here. However, I am not finished yet. I am very happy and calm but I know myself well and if we begin to lose on Wednesday against Laboral Kutxa I will get angry".

Long road
“Darden gave me the first hug. He has lost a final and he told me that it was worth it for the team and for me. This victory belongs to everyone that has come through the club: Suárez, Draper, Pocius… I have good things to say about them all because they gave everything for the club. They deserve part of the win".

Defending against Spanoulis
“I don't know what the magic formula is for defending against Spanoulis. The players put in a great performance to ensure that he didn't get into his attacking flow and we changed things up at the back to counter him. All five players put in a shift defending against him so it wasn't just one man stopping him, instead it was the entire team”.

Importance of the whole roster
“As far as I'm concerned Slaughter is just as important as any of my other players. What he does for us is just incredible. We need specific things from Carroll, from Rudy… It's the entire team that make you great. I have 13 stars in my roster”.

Philosophy
“Basketball is in your blood, it isn't just a job. My playing days are behind me now but I would have gone on forever if I had been able. Reyes and Nocioni are both smart. They want to win and compete”.

Real Madrid secured its first title in the history of the ADIDAS NEXT GENERATION TOURNAMENT by unseating the reigning champion Crvena Zevzda Telekom Belgrade with a 73-70 victory in the 2015 final. Jonathan Barreiro led the way with 19 points for Madrid, which became the ninth club to win the competition. Luka Doncic added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists while Santiago Yusta had 15 points and Emanuel Cate collected 11 points, eight rebounds and eight blocks. The last time the home team won the ANGT trophy was INSEP Paris in 2010. Madrid is the fifth straight new first-time winner of the tournament since FMP repeated its crown in 2009. Crvena Zvezda missed its chance of being the first repeat champion since FMP and fourth multiple-time winner. Aleksandar Aranitovic scored 26 points for the Serbian club while Vojislav Stojanovic collected 15 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks, and Borisa Simanic had 11 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

Cate scored Madrid’s first two baskets before Simanic’s three-pointer gave Crvena Zvezda its first lead at 4-5. Aranitovic nailed a three-ball as well and Aleksa Radanov converted a three-point play as the champs opened a 5-13 advantage. Crvena Zvezda went scoreless for the next 3:29 minutes but Madrid had its scoring issues and only got to within 9-13. Nikola Rakicevic finally got Crvena Zvezda back on the board but Zvezda called a timeout after Doncic hit a three-ball to make it 12-15. After a Zvezda turnover, Madrid evened the game 15-15 on a trey from Andres Rico. Stojanovic answered right back and the Crvena Zvezda defense held the home side without a point for the final 1:35 minutes of the quarter. Zvezda hit the final seven points of the period and was up 15-22. Barreiro came off the Madrid bench and nailed a three-pointer to start the second quarter. Stojanovic re-established the six-point advantage but the Zvezda offense sputtered. Madrid took advantage of that and grabbed the lead 28-24 on three-balls from Doncic and Barreiro and a Doncic basket. Radanov snapped the Zvezda drought and Stojanovic’s trey made it a one-point game 30-29. Madrid would not let the champs back ahead and another Barreiro three-pointer had the Spanish side up 37-33. The Madrid lead was 39-37 at intermission.

Neither team scored for the first two and a half minutes of the second half until Cate’s basket. Crvena Zvezda finally hit a three-pointer against the Madrid zone defense by Aranitovic. Another trey by Stojanovic had the game knotted at 43-43. Doncic’s triple broke the deadlock and Yusta’s three-pointer had Madrid ahead 49-43. Aranitovic and Stojanovic cut the gap to two points but Rico answered with a three-ball and Samba Ndiaye put back an offensive rebound for a 54-47 Madrid cushion - and a Zvezda timeout with two minutes to play in the third quarter. Ndiaye pushed the lead to nine points on a steal and breakaway dunk and Barreiro’s three-point play had Madrid up 59-49 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter, which ended with Zvezda trailing 59-51.

Two Barreiro free throws extended the margin back to 10 points and Yusta’s two from the line increased the lead to 65-54 with seven minutes to play. Crvena Zvezda got the ball inside with a basket by Nikola Popovic and then Simanic got a tough hook to fall and converted a layup to get the Serbian side to within 66-60. After two failed Madrid offensive trips down the court, Aranitovic made it a four-point contest 66-62 with just more than four minutes to play. Ndiaye came up with a big putback for Madrid but two more Aranitovic foul shots trimmed it to 68-65 inside the three-minute mark. Doncic was fouled and split two free throws but Stojanovic missed both of his foul shots at the other end. That left Yusta to hit two free throws for a 71-65 lead with 1:54 to play. Aranitovic stepped up with a layup but he too missed the bonus free throw for a 71-67 scoreline. Doncic turned the ball over but atoned for his mistake by drawing an offensive foul on Stojanovic, his fifth of the game. Madrid failed to convert on two chances and Aranitovic made them pay with a three-pointer to make it 71-70 with 14 seconds to play. Zvezda fouled Barreiro, who made both free throws with 10.4 seconds remaining, leaving what looked like the final possession for the still-reigning champs. Zvezda however could not inbounds the ball as Rico stole it. Yusta failed to ice the game missing both free throws with 6.8 seconds to giving Zvezda one more chance. But Aranitovic’s long three was just off-target, sending the home fans into celebration.

Real Madrid tops Olympiakos for Euroleague title

MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid pulled away in the last four minutes to beat Olympiakos 78-59 Sunday to end its 10-year wait for a ninth Euroleague title.

Olympiakos led 19-15 after one quarter, but Madrid held the Greek team to just nine points in the second to take control. It was still a seven-point game in the final quarter when Andres Nocioni hit a 3 with 3:45 left, and Madrid only increased the margin from there.

Guard Jaycee Carroll hit four 3-pointers to lead Madrid with 16 points, while Sergio Llull and Nocioni added 12 each.
Two days after scoring 11 late points to lead Olympiakos past CSKA Moscow in the semis, guard Vassilis Spanoulis finished with three points on 1-of-5 shooting.

Matt Lojeski scored 17 off the bench for Olympiakos.

Madrid lost the previous two Euroleague finals under coach Pablo Laso, to Olympiakos in 2013 and Maccabi last year.

"This team played hard every time, and a third year in a row we were in a final. And the third time was lucky for us," said Madrid forward Rudy Fernandez. "We played great, amazing defense, and tonight we beat a great team."
Madrid's last Euroleague title also came at the expense of Olympiakos in 1995.

REPORT | Casillas still undecided about leaving Real Madrid. Club wants him to but talks between both parts have not even started.

De Gea to Real Madrid obviously almost a done deal, Real would still want to offload Casillas and avoid controversy over the starting spot.
