BERNABÉU FAITHFUL SET TO INUNDATE STREETS AROUND THE GROUND Fans to turn out en masse to welcome Los Blancos
Real Madrid fans want to play a pivotal role as their team try to overturn their first-leg Spanish Cup tie defeat against Atlético de Madrid. Following Álvaro Arbeloa's call to arms, the Bernabéu faithful have mobilised on social networks.
In recent times, Real Madrid fans have turned up several times en masse to welcome the first-team bus as it dropped players off ahead of key games. Amongst them, last season's Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich and this season's La Liga encounter with Barcelona.
INJURED ARBELOA NOT IN 20-MAN SQUAD
Ramos and Carvajal return for Atlético decider
Dani Carvajal and Sergio Ramos are back in the mix for Real Madrid as Carlo Ancelotti's men bid to stagea fightback against Atlético in the Copa del Reylast 16. Álvaro Arbeloa and Luka Modric miss out through injury.
The blow of Arbeloa's absence is offset by the return of Carvajal, who was unavailable in the league clash with Espanyol at the weekend because of suspension. Ramos, meanwhile, was rested on Saturday and should now be full of beans.
Ancelotti has named a 20-man provisional squad, so he will have to trim it by two before the game at the Bernabéu. An outfield player will join one of the three goalies in dropping out.
Ancelotti calls for "intensity and cool heads"
Carlo Ancelotti has no doubts about what it'll take to turn around the deficit in the cup derby. "We know how we have to play against Atlético. We need to show intensity but keep cool heads. We have 90 minutes [to get a result] so we have no need to rush things. We need to show intensity and play with confidence… We're up against the team who are the best organised defensively in Europe and we need to get our passing spot on", the Real Madrid boss stated.
The Italian denied that 'Los Blancos' would be best served by matching their local rivals physically: "We need an intense performance. I didn't say we have to go in hard. It's going to be an evenly matched game, like always".
Atlético's tough-tackling approach and the officials' response to it: "We haven't spoken about it in the dressing room because talking about the referee isn't going to get us anywhere. We've only spoken about what we need to do tactically to win".
Real face an uphill struggle: "Atlético are the toughest opposition out there. It's not just me that thinks that: everyone in Europe feels the same way".
The role of the Bernabéu faithful: "I think the fans are going to help us. Firstly because it's a derby, so it's very important to them. And also because we have to come back from a very difficult scoreline. It's going to be a fantastic atmosphere for us to play in and we're raring to put in a good performance and make it through to the quarter-finals".
Tonight I want the whole team to shine, But the one I want the most is Bale. It's a big opportunity for him to shut the mouths of all the critics. I hope he gets on the score sheet and give his best.
ARBELOA AND CASILLAS FIRE UP FANS FOR COMEBACK
"Let's go get 'em!"
Álvaro Arbeloa and Iker Casillas took to social media to get the fans fired up for the second leg of the Copa del Rey last-16 match againstAtlético de Madrid.
"I'm out injured tomorrow, so I'll be with all of you. Let's go get 'em!" tweeted the full-back.
Meanwhile, the Real Madrid captain showed plenty of optimism. "Last training session before the cup derby. Can't wait for the game and everyone has a good feeling about it
CHOLO'S SPEECH ANGERS THE BERNABÉU DRESSING ROOM Simeone motivates... Real Madrid!
Additional motivation. That is what the Real Madrid dressing room think about Simeone's latest messages aimed at singing his team's praises whilst belittling the opposition.
Confirmation that the Atlético players "aren't even scared of death" was the final straw and will only serve to further motivate Carlo Ancelotti's players. Simeone's relationship with the Real Madrid squad is cordial, and that is about it.
Some of them were angered by what happened in Lisbon and his reaction towards Varane, but they have finally accepted it as just another one of the Argentine's unique personality traits. However, several Real Madrid players are angered by his tendency to big up his own players whilst demeaning the opposition. At least, that is what several Bernabéu heavyweights think. They plan to take the game by the scruff of its neck from kick-off. Despite it not being a priority for many of the Bernabéu faithful, the Spanish Cup has gained huge importance for both the players and their manager.
The Real Madrid dressing room are not convinced by the story being spread by the opposition that they are scared and intimidated by Atlético's character and will to win. They want to put an end to that rumour once and for all, a rumour started, according to 'los Blancos', by Atleti.
Real Madrid have met up ahead of their Copa del Rey round of 16 second leg clash with Atlético, which will take place in the Santiago Bernabéu (8pm CET). The players left the stadium and travelled to the residence in Ciudad Real Madrid. They will rest there until a few hours before the game.
