When the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja made changes in the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU) after a security breach on the President in Kilifi on May 24th, one of the casualties was SSP Rere Kipkoech Sang , who was the deputy special operation base one (SOB1) within the PEU. He was immediately recalled to Kenya Police Headquarters Vigilance House without any portfolio.

For senior-ranking police officers in commanding positions, being recalled back to vigilance is always a command demotion.

The IG and police authorities described the Kilifi incident as a serious security breach. Rere largely carried the blame for the breach and was immediately replaced from the top commanding position inside the presidential security ring. After months of being without a portfolio, Rere was recently appointed to a "rehabilitative" commanding position and deployed as the Uasin Gishu deputy county police commander.

Prior to that breach, there had been complaints from the PEU members of interference in their work and poor working morale. They were ignored. Later investigation details revealed that part of the PEU compromise was the president's POLITICAL allies overruling security protocols and bullying of the PEU officers, which then exposed the president.
