Tanzania plans to import 400 MW of electricity from Ethiopia

Tanzania plans to import 400 megawatts (MW) of electricity from Ethiopia to power its industrial drive, Tanzanian President John Magufuli said on Friday.

Despite reserves of over 57 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas, Tanzania faces chronic power shortages due to its reliance on hydro-power dams in a drought-prone region, for about a third of its' 1,570 MW of installed capacity.

Magufuli said at a joint news conference with visiting Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn in Dar es Salaam that the power will be transmitted through a high voltage line linking the two nations via Kenya.

"He (Desalegn) has agreed to supply us with 400 megawatts, which could be increased later on," Magufuli said.

Tanzania's state-run power utility, TANESCO, currently sells electricity below cost, undermined by decades of mismanagement and political meddling. It also struggles to cope with transmission leaks and power theft.

Tanzania aims to add about 2,000 MW in gas-fired generation by 2018. Demand for power in the nation of 50 million currently outpaces supply.

Magufuli and Desalegn also witnessed the signing of various deals between the two countries, including cooperation on energy, tourism and agriculture sectors.

Ethiopia inaugurated a $1.57 billion hydropower plant along the Omo River in the country's south in December that is expected to nearly double total electricity output to 4,238 MW.

400 MW???? Kwani Tz watu hawatumii power?? Daah! Ok as you import, Kenya is now getting the near same amount of power from the largest wind power form in Africa. In four years we will tap into coal and Nuclear to reach 10,000 MW enough power for electrification of SGR's and other industries

Which Kenya u r taking about to have 10000 MW in 4 years [emoji15] ? Mind u three coal power projects in the Southern Tanzania r in drafting with one having secured funds already!

Hiyo electricity itapitia route gani to Tanzania?
hope Si through Kenya!

Mtaenda tena kukopa Euro Bonds? Baada ya uchaguzi kuziba gaps itakuwa...mtalipaje?

Dar to Morogor is about 190km, which will be electrified. SRG ya Kenya, Mombasa to Nairobi ni around 450km, which will be electrified soon. From Nairobi to Uganda border, God knows the distance bado inajengwa. Then kuna SRG ya kutoka Lamu to Turkana ambayo iko motoni, more than 1000km, then fro Isiolo to Ethiopia, God knows the distance. i guess the estimates za SRG ya Kenya ni around 2500 - 3000km in total, hard to electrify all of that. Na suspect only Mombasa to Nairobi to Nakuru itakuwa electrified.

That's phase 1 my friend. Phase 2, Morogoro-Makutupora ,Dodoma (336 km) will start in 2 months. Tenders which are currently open are Dodoma-Tabora (294 km), Tabora-Isaka (133 km) and Isaka-Mwanza (249 km). In total, the whole project will have 2,190 km.
The plan is to have all 2190 km electrified.

waaa kuchanyikiwa huku,180km wat is the economic rationale.

Is this a joke of century!!
