Security forces have arrested retired Lt Gen Peter Elwelu in Soroti City this evening. He had been sought over alleged involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilise the Teso sub-region.
According to the director Public information Chris Magezi, weapons were recovered from Elwelu’s possession, including 15 guns, military fatigues and two pickup trucks.
Authorities say Elwelu will be charged and prosecuted in the courts of law.
Background
Elwelu, a former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, also served as commander of the UPDF Land Forces and commanded the 2nd Division in Mbarara. In recent days, the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, announced that a stockpile of firearms and ammunition had been recovered from a home belonging to Elwelu in Teso and gave him hours to surrender. Gen Kainerugaba also announced on X that Elwelu had been demoted to Private, although this was not a formal statement
