REVOLT AGAINST RAILA IN NYANZA

Saturday, January 19, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY WALTER MENYA

VOTERS in Nyanza have revolted against Prime Minister Raila Odinga by rejecting most of his allies in the ODM nominations.

Nyanza has been a stronghold of Odingaism since independence when Jaramogi Oginga Odinga was listened to religiously.Raila's word still carries weight but now virtually all Luo Nyanza MPs have been voted out except for James Orengo, Dalmas Otieno and John Pesa.

The Odinga family also took a beating with Raila's sister being rejected and his brother apparently struggling.Raila's cousin Jakoyo Midiwo, ODM chief whip in the last Parliament, apparently lost earlier in the day but managed to force a recount in Gem constituency.

Historically association with Raila was a virtual guarantee for the party ticket and an easy election.

Raila's elder brother Dr Oburu Oginga was apparently a major casualty.

As the Star went to press last night, Oburu was teetering towards defeat by newcomer William Oduol for the Siaya governor seat. Oduol had opened an unassailable lead of 16,980 votes to Oburu's 3,866 while the third placed Otieno Okanja had just 211.

But it was then announced on media that Oburu had won the ticket with 62,232 against Oduol's 35,198. Called for confirmation, ODM election chairman Franklin Bett said no results were yet final.

"I will respect the people's will and will work with whoever is elected," said Raila yesterday morning.

In Kisumu County, Raila's sister Ruth Odinga was floored by Jack Ranguma, a former Kenya Revenue Authority official, in the confused nominations. Ruth and aspirant Omollo Owino later condemned the nomination exercise as a sham. She accused ODM headquarters of stage-managing the nomination on behalf of Ranguma.

The Odinga family has dominated Nyanza politics for years. Raila's father wielded immense influence there until his death in 1994 and anyone who opposed him was branded a traitor and 'punished' by the voters.

His son Raila inherited Jaramogi's mantle and has since then exercised considerable influence on who gets elected.

Until these nominations, it was only in 1997 that Ford Kenya's James Orengo, MP for Ugenya, and Joe Donde, MP for Gem, went against the NDP wave but still managed to triumph in the polls. That year Raila was the NDP presidential candidate and emerged third behind President Moi and then opposition leader Mwai Kibaki of DP.

But they were not lucky a second time lucky in 2002. Narc swept the region as Kenyans voted out the KANU regime. Orengo was defeated by his late brother-in-law Stephen Ondiek and only made a comeback in 2007 after swallowing his pride and rejoining Raila's ODM.

Aggrey Mwamu, a Kisumu-based lawyer, yesterday denied that the people were challenging Raila.

"It is not about Odingaism but about the people realizing their rights under the new constitution and the need for change. They are voting against the conduct of the MPs which has been very poor," said Mwamu.

According to Mwamu, the former MPs had mismanaged the Constituency Development Funds and failed to initiate development projects.

The cousin of former Mbita MP Otieno Kajwang narrowly escaped death narrowly. Angry voters attacked him claiming that he was marking ballot papers in favour of the Immigration minister who is seeking the ODM ticket for the Senate.

The revolt in Gem constituency saw Midiwo beaten by another newcomer Elisha Odhiambo who was leading with 12,124 votes to Midiwo's 7,109.

Last night returning officers had reportedly nullified the primaries in Gem and Alego-Usonga constituencies after chaos broke out amid claims of irregularities.
Other former MPs who were defeated were Martin Ogindo in Homa Bay; Edick Anyanga; and Nyakach MP Pollyns Ochieng who lost to Aduma Owuor by 12,562 to 6,241.

ODM Secretary General Anyang' Nyong'o was also hanging on precariously in the race for the Kisumu senate seat nomination.

Former Kisumu Town West MP Olago Aluoch was running for the ODM ticket against Rozah Buyu. There was controversy as election materials went missing and prevented voting.

Former Karachuonyo MP James Rege's lead is still being contested by his challengers Adipo Okuome, Dr Ofafa Alfred and Tom Dola.

Public Service Minister Dalmas Otieno managed to trounce his opponents.

In Ugenya, Steve Mwanga, Orange House's favourite and part of Oburu's line-up, could only manage fifth position against newcomer David Ouma. The returning officer declined to declare the results as tension rose in the constituency previously represented by Orengo.

Orengo's former personal assistant, Tom Nduku, also fared badly, managing only a third position behind James Opiyo Wandayi and Joseph Aluru in the newly-created Ugunja constituency.

It must have been tough for ODM but picking the guy who got 211 votes to represent them in Siaya county was a new low, for heavens sake he came out last.

Homeboy Gado,I wish angekuwa TZ azidi kutuchorea vikaragosi, hapo Bongo pana sarakasi nyingi za kisiasa lakini zinaonewa aibu kuzitoa hadharani, kuna wakati GADO kwenye East African alitoa katuni ya waandishi wa habari na wapambe wakimulamba viatu mkubwa anayependwa kutukuzwa kila siku, ilikuwa balaa, wakubwa walilaani na kumpa majina mengi yasiyofaa Gado na wengine hata kudiriki kusema mhaini, jamani uhuru wa kutoa mawazo upo wapi Tanzania?nimeona Kibaki /Raila/Moi wakichorwa kwa kila namna lakini sijasikia hata siku moja wachoraji hivyo vikaragosi wakisemwa kwa kuchora hivyo vikaragosi,TZ bado tuna safari ndefu katika uhuru wa habari au kutoa mawazo

Why Luoland rose up against the Odingas in ODM polls

By OTIENO OTIENO ( email the author) Posted Saturday, January 19 2013 at 18:07

Friday, January 18, 2013 is a day Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga may want to mark in his diary.

It is the day Luo Nyanza woke up.

National television beamed images of angry Karachuonyo youth tearing Mr Odinga's campaign posters and chanting pro-TNA slogans.

A young man sensing that Mr William Oduol, the people's choice for Siaya governor, might be short-changed in the ODM nominations in favour of Dr Oburu Oginga, the PM's elder brother, warned on TV: "If Raila lets us down, we shall let him down."

NTV reporter Larry Madowo, who has been covering the nominations in the county in the past three days, posted a telling tweet: "A mother just stopped me in Siaya town: ‘Bwana Larry, tell Raila Odinga that the fact that we're poor does not mean we're stupid.'"

Politicians passing themselves as close allies of the PM's were voted out amidst an angry wave of anti-Odinga sentiment across the land.

To make sense of these events, one has to consider the fact that until recently the picture would be very different.

The Siaya man would be hero-worshipping Raila, the Karachuonyo crowd would be declaring its willingness to die for Raila, the Siaya mother would be singing Raila's praises, and the politicians would only need to pass by a trading centre to deliver fake greetings from Raila to earn the party ticket.

Chances are that the PM will publicly dismiss Friday's events as another storm in a tea cup.

But privately he'll be hurting and asking himself how it came to this.

Well, he won't have to look any further than himself and the people around him for an answer.

The current rebellion is a culmination of a simmering resentment against an evolving Odinga hegemony and his patronising of Luo politics over the years.

There is a growing perception that voters in Luo Nyanza don't go to the polls to elect their leaders but to help Raila select his friends. It is not by accident that the ODM nominations were particularly flawed in the Luo Nyanza counties.

The informal power wielded by Mrs Ida Odinga, the PM's wife, in ODM Elena Ceausescu-style has also alienated a section of party faithful.

If the people had somehow come to tolerate the patronage as a small sacrifice for the party leader, their patience has lately worn thin in light of what they consider attempts by the Odingas to go for broke.

Word on the street is that in this election alone, at least five members of the Odinga family intended to run for various seats in Nairobi, Siaya and Kisumu.

For a man who partly owes his popularity to the notion that he is a political enigma, the PM's high-profile role in the coalition government also served to remove the mystery.

Even among his most ardent supporters, there have to be some who look at him and think of the scandals at his office discussed in WikiLeaks and Miguna Miguna's Peeling Back the Mask.

And I thought the Luos couldn't take the Miguna wake up call!

Not that Miguna is beyond questions himself, but for some reason, after that book, Raila is almost irreparably damaged in my view.

Mkuu Kiranga,

Happy belated New yr sir!

Good to see you resurface and please stay around to the 'hitma' of this thing.

Just for clarity's sake these demonstrations are not against Raila Odinga...that is a creation of the media
which is controlled by TNA Mandarins to paint the Prime Minister in bad light. Truth be told, Luo Nyanza will
vote for Raila man to man....you can take that to the bank. Hapa haribika kitu hapo.

What they don't want, is people using Raila's name to impose themselves on the electorate! In this case the main
culprit is non other than Oburu Odinga and his stubborn self. Recall that Ruth Odinga decided to get out of this
race because of the insinuations arising therein. Huyu Oburu nd'o alikua anaganda mpaka akitwa Nairobi na the
NEB of ODM...ndo akachomoa albeit reluctantly.

Looking at the nomination electins, its imperative to note that ODM/CORD is the only party that carried out the
nominations with a semblance of democracy. Out of 47 counties, they were successful and peaceful nominations
in I believe 44 of them. No other party/coalition came close to that.

By the way we are also having 'revolts and resentment' on the Uhuru Kenyatta side of things with people
receiving direct nominations while they are incapacitated in hospitals....no nominations exercise rite there.
Others like Mary Wambui (Kibakis concubine/nyumba ndogo) have gone to gne because she has been denied the
certificate yet she whitewashed the Mugambi fella in Othaya....Kibaki's son Jimmy is interfering in that one.

Thats how skewed Kenyan reporting can be.

Shukran

Raila says he is not to blame for protests in nominations

By Geoffrey Mosoku and Roselyne Obala

Nairobi, Kenya: Prime Minister Raila Odinga has downplayed the protests that marred the just-concluded party primaries, arguing its effects will not affect his bid.

"We have come to the end of a fiercely competitive election primaries. To all people of Kenya, I urge for calm and reconciliation now that the primaries are over," he appealed.

Although the violence was witnessed in Nyanza, a region considered his stronghold, the PM said it could not be used to gauge his popularity.

Raila dismissed as speculation fears that the chaos may dent his quest for the presidency, reiterating that the mess witnessed was not a party affair, but an unfortunate occurrence. "I represent Nairobi and have a national support base. I was not present in these areas and the failures should not be blamed on me," he said.

Despite Raila's home turf being Nyanza, he sought to set the record straight that his political backyard is Nairobi. "I am a national leader with support across all the regions in the country," he told journalists.

He also said assumptions that he might lose support as a result of the violence were not based on any facts. The Prime Minister said his party had relied on information received from returning officers.

Raila said the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) faced challenges in three out of the 47 counties and thus could not be perceived to limit his presidential chances.

"The violence was isolated in some areas. The incidents are unfortunate but it's time to put everything behind and move forward united as a country," he urged.

The PM, without mentioning the counties, made reference to Kisumu, Homa Bay and Siaya, where he said ODM had tried to resolve the disputes amicably. "We will try to make the best out of the challenges the party faced. We will ratify those mistakes and move forward," he said.

Raila noted that the huge interest in the party ticket was clearly a manifestation of the strong desire for change and that CORD was the force for change.

Are you aware that Anyang nongo has been given direct nomination? Those are signs of smoke and fire will ultimately burn after march 4 if for instance Anyang nyongo and midiwo lose. A good recipie for post election violence to erupt yet again!!

Ab-titchaz do not try to approve anti-democratic actions by cord people by referring to TNA just because you are a cord fan. As far as my conscience tells me, TNA has conducted its polls maturely with little unrest which is a status that should be enviable by CORD. We have witnessed a return of scenes witnessed in 2007 elections in kendu bay and Kisumu.

Raila will not suppress and force down the throats aspirants against the will of the luo using his influence and the writing is on the wall for him.

Kabaridi,

aloo umetumwa wewe?

There you go with your skewed appreciation of matters. Im not approving any un-democratic practices by either
party...huo ni mtazamo wako mazee. Its folks like you that make a living shouting Raila this, Raila that on all
matters ODM. Cant we just have a discussion without mentioning Raila's name? Raila is not forcing nothing on
nobody as you are trying to make us believe. Infact he has categorically stated he has nothing to do with what
is going on in Luo Nyanza or the CORD nominations anywhere in the country. Those pushing for that notion have
their own agenda and we have seen many times all over the blogosphere. You can go sell snake oil to people who will buy it but not here at JF.

You are trying to lie to people here that TNA conducted its elections maturely yet we are seeing Kibaki's
second wife crying foul about the 'Dark Forces' that are trying to impose Mugambi on the people of Othaya!
That is something you have conviniently chosen to ignore.

....The fact that people like kina Haji are given direct nominations in their hospital beds is really telling of this
mature democracy you are talking about here.

...the fact that TNA announced results for only 10 counties and then closed up shop and started issuing
certificates after boardroom consultations...that also you have chosen to ignore.

....the fact that Amina Ridhiwani at the Coast was threatening suicide after her name was excluded from the
TNA list even though she was unopposed. That you have also conviniently chosen to ignore.

You can fool some people some time, but you cant fool all the people all the time.

Everything is posted here at Jamiiforums so that people can have a balanced and fair assesment of matters.
We are not going to be lied to by the media that is controlled by the Mt Kenya Mafia..that choses to
conviniently broadcast the uproars in Nyanza yet turning a blind eye to the shenanigans of one Uhuru
Kenyatta and his TNA vehicle.

I do not approve of the direct nominations of Anyang Nyongo and Midiwo as much as I do not approve
the direct nomination of Mugambi in Othaya and that Yusuf fellow amongst a host of others.

Toa hio, lete nyengine!

Oh... I forgot to mention the Kimunya fella...Kibakis blue eyed boy who facilitated the sell of Grand Regency to the
Libyans and had the audacity to lie to the Kenyan parliament about it. Huyo pia nasikia kapata direct nomination.
Kabaridi, unaona hii longo longo unajaribu kuleta hapa Jamiiforum?..Watu wako gado mazee!

Huyu Mama mimi naona kina Jimmy wanamchezea bafuchafu maana Jimmy is on tape saying he had talked to 'Mzee'
and the old man was supporting Mugambi. Unajua hio sasa ni serious endorsement mazee?

Thats why she is miffed. Initially haikua ishu lakini when they went ahead and denied her the certificate then
nikajua kumedhoki!

Sasa naona pia wamehamisha ma-DO na DC wa hio sehemu...I dont know what to read from that lakini Wambui's
daughter said jamaa waliambiwa watafutwa kazi if Mama won the Othaya nominations on a TNA ticket. That's
exactly what transpired.

Haya acha tue wapole tusubiri hitma ya hii kitu.

halafu mdau those were the same "dark-forces" that were supporting UDF trying to shortchange TNA leadership, so where does that leave TNA. Kibaki/Mzee is retired and PNU.. so TNA must come to the rescue and clear out this compromisation of democracy from PNU forces. or mugambi should seek an alternative party to fight again in the ballot. As far as I am concerened that is the only bad event with TNA, because TNA has showcased class.

So we understand that UHURU/TNA is clean from this madness? right? infact much as raila would want to wash his hands from the madness in kendu bay and Kisumu, we agree both raila and Kibaki are distressing democracy, both need to retire, but raila still is discontent with the changing face of kenyan politics and would want to learn it the hard way.

We have come to the end of very complex and fiercely competitive election primaries.

On behalf of the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy, I wish to congratulate all those who sought our ticket, those who won and those who were not successful.

The huge interest in the party's ticket was clearly a manifestation of the strong desire for change and the belief that CORD is the force for change in the country.

I look forward to working very closely with all the winners to ensure we secure a decisive victory on March 4th.

We also have a role for all those who have not been able to secure victory in the primaries.

My word to all of them is that we need everybody on board. Let all of us join hands now, the winners and those they beat, to campaign for our victory on March 4th.

My congratulations go also to those who secured tickets on other parties; Jubilee, Amani, Narc-Kenya, and all the others. They all have contributed to the democratization of our country and they will have a role in shaping our nation going forward.

To all the people of Kenya, I urge calm and reconciliation now that the primaries are over.

I wish to see an end to all hostilities that may have arisen out of the strong demand for the various tickets.

Elections and nominations must never divide us or make us go to war. They should strengthen our march towards democracy and national unity.

I appeal to our worthy competitors to embrace peace as we enter the final stretch of this campaign.

Let us focus on issues, not personalities. Let us focus on what is good for our country, not what would work for tribes and regions.

Let us mobilise votes on a national and not a tribal agenda.

Let us secure votes through policies and not bribery or intimidation. I appeal to our citizens to reject leaders who want to buy leadership using money and other aspects of bribery.

Kenya's future must not be compromised with money.

I want to make a special appeal to our citizens to create an enabling environment for our female candidates in this campaign.

Nobody should use violence, blackmail, intimidation or any other crude means against female candidates.

A number of young men and women have also won tickets to run for various positions.

We must equally accord them support and create and sound environment for them to compete fairly and freely.

Finally, I ask all Kenyans to maintain the peace during this campaign and after. Let all of us come out and vote in the historic exercise on March 4th.

Thank you all."
