RAILA FACES CRISIS OVER OBURU NOMINATION

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 - 00:00 -- BY DAVID MWERE

PRIME Minister Raila Odinga personally asked both his brother Oburu and his sister Ruth to both step down for the sake of peace in Nyanza.

Ruth accepted her brother's appeal and gave up her aspirations for the Kisumu governor nomination. However Oburu refused leaving the ODM dispute resolutions board split over the issue last night.

ODM elections board chairman Frankline Bett was being forced to consult further last night before announcing whether Oburu or William Oduol would be given the Siaya governor ticket.

Yesterday the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission extended up to midnight the deadline for political parties to submit their list of nominees for candidates in the March 4 elections.

Raila consulted widely before advising his brother and sister to back down. "I spoke to Raila on behalf of the council and told him that Oburu did not win the election and there were no polls in Kisumu. Because of that the best way was for both of them to step down and he promised to do that," said Willis Otondi, chairman of the Luo council of elders.

Raila also requested his cousin former Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo to reconsider his controversial nomination for GEM MP after the vote was contested.

On Sunday, violence broke out in Kisumu after it was rumoured that Ruth, Midiwo and Oburu had all been nominated by ODM to be the party candidates in the elections.

Yesterday Oduol made it clear to the ODM dispute resolution team led by Joseph Kiangoi that he would not accept any other position than Siaya governor because he had won the ticket.

Yesterday morning Raila spoke to Oburu and asked him to stand aside but he refused. Oburu argued that he had won the nomination and should not be sacrificed just because he is Raila's elder brother.

On Friday the Siaya returning officer went missing for several hours saying that she had been threatened. On her return, she declared Oburu the winner.

The standoff between Oburu and Oduol forced the ODM National Elections Board to postpone a scheduled press conference yesterday evening where they were due to announce their verdicts on disputed contests.

On Sunday night Raila reportedly told his younger sister Ruth to drop her bid. "The PM told Ruth that although he respected her democratic right to stand, he would appreciate if she thought about the chaos her entry into politics had caused and decide if she wanted to continue with her quest," said a close associate of Raila.

Ruth quit the Kisumu governor race in a press statement yesterday morning. "I would like to step down for the sake of peace and the PM… I did vie as Ruth Odinga and not as a member of the Odinga family," she stressed.

She says she is only shelving her ambition until 2017 but will continue supporting her brother for the top job. "In my campaigns I have gone out of my way to convince voters but due to the fuss generated, I would rather have peace," she said.

"I am in ODM and I will support the PM and the candidate for Kisumu governor and I will be back in the race after five years."

Her exit leaves the position of Kisumu governor open for her main challenger Jack Ranguma. The Sunday demonstrations took place simultaneously in Kisumu, Nyando and Maseno where roads leading to Kisumu town were blocked and transport paralysed.

Looking at the nomination electins, its imperative to note that ODM/CORD is the only party that carried out the
nominations with a semblance of democracy.
Out of 47 counties, they were successful and peaceful nominations
in I believe 44 of them. No other party/coalition came close to that.

Shukran

AAaah! in bold you are trying to explain a red-herring. isn't it just the other day prior to the primaries in nyanza, potential business men that wanted to stand with CORD were killed in mysterious circumstances. A CORD aspirant seekin to run in Busia had to run to neighboring Uganda to safeguard dear life after receiving threats!:spy:

Four people were killed on Monday in Kisumu following violent protests that were ignited with the killing of an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) parliamentary aspirant Shem Onyango alias Kwegah.

The three were among a group of five people who had sought refuge at a furniture shop in Kondele to escape the crossfire between rioters and the police.

According to an eye witnesses, police lobbed a teargas canister which burst into flames due to contact with a flammable substance.

Two people who survived the incident were admitted at the New Nyanza General Hospital with serious burns.

Protesters also blocked the Kisumu - Kakamega highway and destroyed properties.

A boda boda operator, Kenneth Oduor, who was ferrying a passenger that got killed early in the day said his client was shot as they approached a police station.

“He was bleeding profusely from his chest. We rushed him to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he died on arrival,” Mr Oduor said.

Mr Kwegah, a Kisumu Central Constituency aspirant, died from gunshot wounds he sustained after being shot by unknown assailants sparking protests.

Mr Kwegah's wife was also shot during the 10am incident but doctors at the Aga Khan Hospital Intensive Care Unit say she was out of danger.

Following the incident, protests rocked the town's Central Business District as residents led by Muhoroni MP, Ayiecho Olueny demonstrated over insecurity.

According to an eye witness, the couple were shot near Mamba Hotel as they drove towards town.

A boda boda operator said that he following Kwegah’s car closely when two assailants approached the vehicle.

Mr Kwegah was then ordered by one of the assailants to stop his car or be shot.

“Stop the car or I will shoot! Today is your day and no one will help you,” said the assailant.

It's then that the gunman approached the driver's side as Mr Kwegah opened his window to check on the disturbance.

“As he drove over a bump, the gunman shot him on the head and fired another shot on his jaw then shot Kwegah's wife on her arm, ” said the eye witness.

Meanwhile, ODM has called on the government to investigate the motive behind the murder of Mr Kwegah.

ODM Secretary General Prof Anyang' Nyong'o said the killing comes in the wake of increasing cases of insecurity in Kisumu and it's environs, a situation that has become a major concern to the residents of the Lakeside town.

Aspirant flee to Uganda after threats

An aspirant for an elective seat in Teso North District has sought refuge in Uganda after getting threatening calls.
Peter Mwaura famously known as Kamande, who is vying for the Malaba Central ward’s county representative seat, is said to have received calls from unknown people asking him to drop his bid.

Teso OCPD, Elphas Korir, said that they have initiated investigations into the matter and said no one should threaten another, terming it a criminal offence.
“We are taking this matter very seriously and we will ensure the suspect is arrested. Politicians should be ready to face each other in the polls instead of threatening one person and an entire community,” said Korir.
Mr Mwaura said the caller claimed he was not supposed to contest the seat in Teso as he was from a different community and warned him of dire consequences if he does not step down.
“The caller claimed that since I was a Kikuyu, I should not contest a seat in Teso and said I could face unknown consequences,” said Mwaura.
Mwaura, who is also a renowned businessman in Malaba border, added that he had also been warned that his community members living in the area could be in trouble if he did not step down.

Thanks for the link bro.

2 things I will say....

The top story was a thuggery situation gone bad and the Kenya police should investigate it. Insinuating that
its an ODM thing is looking a bit too far in the 'tea leaves'.

...Hio story ya pili nayo haieleweki maana it's not being stated what party the fellow belonged to or was
intending to run on. And I see the man is being blocked because he is a kikuyu. To be fair, hii ni mambo
ya kuuliza Kapondi maana thats his area. The last time I checked Kapondi was a TNA/URP sympathiser.

Over to you.

Thats the irony, because if it were TNA or jubilee or URP involved in that scheme it would have, it would have been reported as such, but those involved in the scheme seem to be either ford kenya or ODM

Mazee morio, I gotta give it to you when it comes to speculation!.....:glasses-nerdy:

If the coppers didnt do any conclusive investigation (as is the norm in KE) then lets just live it at that.
Mwenzio hapa sijasema ni ODM wala URP wala TNA.
