Ruth Odinga not cleared for Kisumu Governor's seat

The National Elections Board (NEB) of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dispelled claims that it has declared Ms Ruth Odinga as the nominee for the Kisumu Governor's seat in the March 4, General Election.


"The Board categorically states that it has not issued any information regarding the Kisumu gubernatorial contest and urges the residents of Kisumu to remain calm and maintain peace," said a press statement to the newsroom.

"The NEB says that reports in the mainstream media and information that is trending on the social media should be treated as rumours and therefore urges the public to ignore them," it added.

Meanwhile, the ODM Returning Officer who had earlier been reported to have been hijacked announced the winners for the party primaries in Nairobi.

Mr John Mulee declared Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang as winner for Homa Bay Senatorial position and Mr Cyprian Awiti as Governor's seat flag bearer.

Others are Gladys Wanga (Women Representative), Oyugi Magwanga (MP, Kasipul) Millie Odhiambo (MP, Mbita) and Omondi Anyanga (MP, Nyatike).

In Malava, Mr Alfred Said Kasavuli bagged the UDF parliamentary ticket while Mr Charles Mongare Geni is the ODM nominee for North Mugirango.

Ruth Odinga withdraws from Kisumu Governor bid

Ruth Odinga on Monday announced that she had withdrawn from the ODM Kisumu gubernatorial race.

Speaking to Nation on phone, Ms Odinga said that she had voluntarily stepped down and was not influenced by Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

"I decided to step down for the sake of peace and sanity in Kisumu following yesterday (Sunday) protests that would put the Odinga family in bad light" she said.

Ms Odinga reiterated that she was not stepping down in favour of any of gubernatorial candidate adding that she will work with the elected ODM gubernatorial nominee.

"I will work with whomever the party choses" she said.


Ms Odinga urged the people of Kisumu to remain calm and not be misled with false information.

NAIROBI,KENYA: Prime Minister Raila Odinga's sister Ruth has stepped down from Kisumu Gubernatorial race in a move she says will restore peace in the county.

Jack Ranguma will now be the flag bearer for the Orange Democratic Movement in Kisumu in the March 4, General Election.

Ruth said she will remain in ODM and campaign for Raila as well as work for the people of Kisumu as she has done in the past.

"I step down for the sake of peace in the country and Kisumu in particular," she said.

On Sunday, ODM's National Elections Board (NEB) dispelled claims that it had declared Ms Ruth Odinga as the nominee for the Kisumu Governor's seat.

In a press statement addressed to the media, the board categorically stated that it had not issued any information regarding the Kisumu gubernatorial contest.

"The Board categorically states that it has not issued any information regarding the Kisumu gubernatorial contest and urges the residents of Kisumu to remain calm and maintain peace," the letter read.

This comes after chaotic scenes rocked Nyando Constituency and Kisumu County areas on Saturday morning after voters disputed the ODM party nomination results.
