Horticulture earnings hit Sh153 billion last year making it the third foreign exchange earner after diaspora remittances (Sh272 billion) and tourism (Sh157 billion).
The earnings in the review period grew by 33 per cent from Sh115 billion in the previous year on account of high demand and good international prices.
Flowers made the bulk of the earnings, bringing in Sh113 billion, with vegetables at Sh27 billion and fruits raking in Sh12 billion.
The industry defied challenges resulting from delays in supply of fertiliser to make the impressive performance.
Kenya Flower Council (KFC) chief executive Clement Tulezi said the performance shows the country’s potential.
“The industry overcame many challenges such as high energy costs and trade and phytosanitary restrictions in several potential markets,” he said.

He said the challenges the government should address include double taxation and the high cost of doing business.
Trade Principal Secretary Chris Kiptoo said the government was addressing the challenges. "From the results that we have just seen it is evident that the horticulture industry is key to our economy and we need to give it all the required support," he said.
Dr Kiptoo said the government was working toward expanding the export market for horticultural products besides European markets which account for 40 per cent of exports.
“The government is exploring new markets like China to complement the traditional European market.
“The US market is also key for us following commissioning of direct flights between Kenya and the US,” he said.
The sector was hit hard by acute shortage of fertiliser resulting from the stringent and lengthy clearance process by the Kenya Bureau of Standards at the port of entry.
The sector was also affected by imposition of 16 per cent VAT on pest control products.

If you are smart enough you will notice that, what you look down on is a gold mine. America also exports raw agricultural products to china like soybeans, wheat etc. That attitude is the reason why your country relies so much on minerals and does not diversify, its source of revenue. Notice fruit exports raked in kshs 12 billion, this China deal could increase that to kshs 50 billion.

Also kenya's debt is broken down into two categories:
-Domestic(What the GOK owes kenyan banks and kenyans who buy T-bills and bonds)-Kshs 2.5 Trillion
-Bilateral-Kshs 2.6 Trillion of which 60% is owed to china.
Kenya's GDP is now Kshs 99 trillion, growing at 6% annually that means Kenya can pay its debt comfortably, plus if you knew finance you would know that if you want to grow and be succesful, you should learn to harness the power of debt.
I started a company without putting in a single coin of mine, instead i used other people's time and money by taking in debt from investors and using their network to further my agenda, but i guess this knowledge is alien to you because you guys are not really known to be very financially literate.
NB: I can also take debt to settle another debt, it is called refinancing, where i can take a longer term debt to settle an urgent unfavourable short term debt.

Find below the power of kenyan agriculture,
-Kenya has an installed capacity to process 5 billion litres of milk annually.Dairy sector contributes bout 6% of kenya's GDP
-A survey conducted by Smallholder Dairy Project (SDP) asserts that there are approximately 6.7 million dairy cattle in Kenya (SDP, 2005). The Food Agricultural Organization (FAO) on the other hand estimates a figure of 5.5 million milking animals (TechnoServe, 2008). In Africa, Kenya is the only country, after South Africa that produces enough milk for both domestic consumption and export.
-Kenya is the largest exporter of Tea in africa, earning kenya 140 billion shillings in 2018
-Horticulture in kenya is among the most developed in Africa after south africa earning about 150+ billion shillings in 2018
-Kenya's annual maize production is about 3.19 million tonnes annually.

All the tanzanians looking down on agriculture are either ignorant at best or willful purveyors of falsehood.

Hivi ni eneo gani kenya wanalima maparachichi kwa wingi??????????????
The current local market prices for a 90-kilogram bag of avocado in selected markets across the country are as follows: 4,000 shillings in Mombasa, 2,600 shillings in Loitoktok, 2,200 shillings in Nairobi, 2,100 shillings in Eldoret, 2,000 shillings in Nakuru and 800 shillings in Kitale.

Avocado farming has increasingly been adopted in recent years by Kenyan farmers, especially smallholder farmers who account to over 70 percent of the total production.

The high uptake of avocado by these farmers has been linked to the huge profitability especially from the international markets together with the global awareness of its health benefits.

Kenyan farmers are growing more and more Avocadoes to not only meet the local demand but that of the European market too and as a result, the country is now among the world’s biggest exporters of avocados and currently the world’s sixth largest exporter of the fruit.

It has been estimated that Kenya produces 115,000 metric tons of avocado annually, three-quarters of which end up in expanding export markets.

Kenya earned 6.5 billion shillings and 5.2 billion shillings in 2016 and 2015 from avocado exports respectively, according to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

Although Kenya’s commercial production of avocado began only 40 years ago, avocados are now estimated to be the fourth most important national fruit crop, behind only to banana, mango and pineapple.

Moreover, avocados have grown to represent 17 percent of Kenya’s total horticultural exports.

Kenya is the world’s sixth largest exporter of avocados with three percent of the world’s total and Africa’s second biggest after South Africa.

Early this year, the government banned all avocado exports following a severe shortage of popular varieties, Fuerte and Hass, which were the off-season.

Farmers and traders were intentionally starving the domestic market in favour of the international market resulting in the shortage of the ‘new wonder crop’ which saw the price of the fruit rise to a three-and-a-half-year high with an avocado in Nairobi’s retail markets going selling for between 50 shillings and 80 shillings up from between 10 shillings and 20 shillings each during high season.

Apart from high demand, Avocados also takes a shorter time to produce compared to Kenya’s traditional cash crops such as coffee which further boosts its appeal.

The main varieties grown in Kenya is a local variety, known as “Kienyeji”, Fuerte variety and Hass variety. The Pinkerton avocado cultivar is also grown in Kenya although in way smaller quantities.

The main areas where avocados are grown in Kenya are the central highlands of Thika, Muranga, Nyeri, Embu and Meru areas. Other areas include Eldoret, Kisii, Subukia, Nakuru, and Naivasha.

For the more perceptive of you, you will notice that in africa, kenya can only be compared to south africa in agriculture but other areas where we compete south africa are:
-Technology (We attract and have more deals than south africa in terms of financing technology companies, we also have the fastest internet speed in africa as quoted by Akamai CDN network, Huawei has also ranked kenya top in sub saharan africa on internet usage)
-Retail (Kenya has the second most formalized retail sector after south africa, and the biggest supermarkets second to south africa in sub saharan africa).
-Finance (Kenya has among the biggest and most profitable banks in africa, also among the largest insurance companies e.g UAP, BRITAM, Jubilee etc. We also have one of the largest stock markets in africa ie. The Nairobi stock exchange which is fourth in market capitalization and second to south africa in terms of market depth as quoted by barclays)
-Logistics (We are second best in africa after south africa)
-Innovation (We managed to beat Mauritius and take the number 2 spot after south africa).
-Primary education (Kenyan children out performed south african children in several standardized tests carried out in 2007 by Southern and East African Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality. )
The list continues but i think you get the gist, in the region kenya is in a whole different league. We are a small country but we quite often punch above our weight.

Our problem is corruption, once we manage to sustain the fight against corruption for a long time, then we are set for take off,we have little resources but we have atleast achieved so much, its the people, kenya strength lies upon its people, our public service is largely inept.

Kevin85ify.......what is your view on the affordable housing agenda.international investors have committed to inject $2billion.....such capital invested in our economy will improve liquidity and the ripple effects in utilities will lead many household to financial stability.....besides it has the potential to eliminate slum housing and standardise housing in our cities, johannesburg is doing it,its one of the few ANC success stories,as of now joburg doesn't have eyesore brickless slum housing, that title is now with capetown.people should give it a chance.

Mr finance guy, I agree with you to use other people's money to make money. But I totally differ with you to borrow money to pay debt.

Debt refinancing is a term used for the process of converting original debt into new debt. This is often done for the purpose of consolidating debts and allowing easier and more efficient payment. One of the main objectives of debt refinancing is the overall lowering of interest rates, which becomes possible once debts have been consolidated.

By having their debt refinanced, companies may also change their short-term loans into long-term loans. Although this extends the period of time during which an entity will have to service debt, for many companies, this can be a very helpful arrangement. Extending the payment term lowers the amount due per month

I support the affordable housing project, majorly because it will have an effect on our steel, cement and small businesses. 90% of the material will be locally manufactured ie Cement, roofing tiles and iron sheets, doors, windows etc and it will also create alot of income for our masons, plumbers and carpenters. I do have an issue with how they choose to raise taxes on the middle class inform of a house levy but that is majorly because i am a conservative politically

Kevin85ify.......i don't feel the middle class, they are very ignorant when it comes to matters national....let them be taxed to death until they come to their senses and contribute positively nationaly,we have a formally working middle class of about 3 million therebout...majority are civil servants working for the government...we have one of the most innefient public sector..lethargy is king in any public office...let squeeze resources from them to build houses for the poor...am eagerly waiting for that court ruling later this month,,remember investors just want a guarantee the government will buy houses from them....this project has the ability to stimulate the economy in a massive way never seen.

What is there not to be proud of? Yes i am pure kenyan blood and bones, pride in my country is my duty. If you are waiting for me to apologize for my ego, well Jesus will come before i do that. If signs of going to school means i have to grovel to my inferior neighbor, i am sorry that is not in me.
