Scholarships Year 2009

Scholarships Year 2009

Major changes have occurred in the last 10-20 years in the way society views waste. The old ‘cover and forget’, ‘dilute and disperse’, ‘end of pipe’ approaches that typified waste management in the past have been modified by the realisation that sustainability cannot be achieved by ignoring the consequences of production and consumption in our desire for goods and services.

This sustainable waste management course is designed to satisfy the need for better-trained and more highly qualified professionals, to help achieve environmental standards demanded of the waste sector in practical and cost effective ways. It encapsulates the primary goals of the modern ‘waste manager’, those of minimisation, reuse and recycling, and examines disposal option selection and design on the grounds of environmental effectiveness as well as cost. Students also study the policy and legislative framework within which waste is managed along with methods available for recovery, treatment and disposal. This is supplemented with a sound grounding in management techniques and methods for assessing the environmental and financial impacts of waste management activities.

Course Modules Include:

- Sustainable Waste Management Dissertation
- Profession and Industry – multidisciplinary working
- Waste Minimisation and Recycling
- Landfill Processes and Design
- International Environmental Impact Assessment
- Wastewater Engineering
- Biological Treatment and Product Utilisation
- Thermal Processing and Hazardous Waste Management
- Environmental Law

PhD Studentship at the Institute of Petroleum Engineering, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK

A PhD studentship is available in the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, to work on an industry funded Uncertainty Quantification project.

Improvement of geological realism in reservoir models is one of the ultimate goals in assessing uncertainty of production predictions. One of the ways to characterize realistic geology is to describe model components and relations in a form of prior distributions, which are based on relevant geological knowledge and data. For instance, a relation between curvature and widths for fluvial channels is supported by observation of contemporary river systems.

The PhD work will be focused on integration of geo-data from different fields – geology, hydrology, paleo-geology, geography – into sub-surface reservoir models. More efficient use of relevant data as informative priors aims to improve realism and prediction capability of the petroleum reservoir forecasting model. Uncertain forecast can be improved by using realistic quantification of model unknowns described by statistical priors, elicited from geological prior knowledge. Use of informative prior distribution in prediction modelling requires self-consistent description of complex dependencies hidden in data, which are subject to vast uncertainties and usually cannot be well represented analytically.

The candidate will join a dynamic and diverse team of post-docs and PhDs lead by Prof. Mike Christie. The research carried out by the team addresses aspects of uncertainty quantification including stochastic optimisation methods, geostatistics, machine learning, and employs high-level scientific computation (including a 84 node Linux cluster). The research is funded by a consortium of oil companies, and the skills acquired in while studying for the PhD are likely to be applicable to a wide range of areas, including the oil industry.

Desired skills:

The successful candidate must have a degree in geology, strong numeric geological knowledge and understanding of natural systems behaviour and data acquisition. Experience in subsurface geology, paleo-geology, hydro-geology and ground water modelling will be beneficial. Knowledge of computational methods and petroleum engineering is desirable.

To apply send a CV to Dr V Demyanov, vasily.demyanov@pet.hw.ac.uk,

PhD Student Position in Theoretical Physics at Integrated Science Lab (IceLab), Umeå University, Sweden

Umeå University - with its 29,000 students and over 4,000 employees - is an organisation in constant change and development. Umeå Universityconducts groundbreaking research within several areas - several in which we are among the best in the world - within others regarded as the leaders in Sweden. We are one of Sweden's largest providers of education and offer a broad and attractive range of courses and programmes. Our campus constitutes an inspiring environment for everyone that studies and works here. We wish to co-operate with companies and organisations throughout the Umeå region and all over the world.

The Department of Physics at Umeå University has a staff of approximately 90 people, including 12 professors, 28 researchers/teachers with a PhD degree, approximately 35 PhD students, a technical/administrative staff of about ten, and several individuals in temporary employment positions such as post docs. The department does active research in the areas of interdisciplinary physics of complex systems, optical physics, condensed matter physics, plasma and space physics, and theoretical physics.

We are looking for an exceptional PhD student to join our interdisciplinary group at the newly started Integrated Science Lab, where we work on solving problems of the life sciences using tools from physics, mathematics, and computer science. Hosted by the Department of Physics at Umeå University, this is a full-time position over a period of four years, during which an opportunity for part-time teaching may be offered. The expected start date is September 1, 2009.

The PhD student will contribute to the ongoing project "Mapping and modelling of information flow in living systems," which seeks to answer the question: How do information, communication, and structure co-evolve in living systems? We are interested in, for example, the interactions between bacteria and their environments on an evolutionary timescale, the effects human interactions have on communication and the spreading of diseases across social networks, and how these structures change over time. To approach these problems, we work with many different techniques. For example, to comprehend the flow of information through the complex structure of living systems, we develop information-theoretic clustering tools. To better understand how the structure affects communication conditions and, vice versa, how ongoing communication affects the structure, we take a modelling approach and simulate the different systems. To connect our theory to real-life observations and exchange knowledge with experts outside our own field, we collaborate with physicists, biologists, and sociologists both nationally and internationally.

For this project, the PhD student is expected to do analytical and computational work and develop models and tools to study the role of information in living systems. The successful candidate should have excellent programming skills and experience in C, C++, Java, Matlab, Perl, and/or Python. Moreover, the candidate should have a strong record in theoretical physics and/or computer science.

Prerequisites include either (i) 240 ECTS credits (swe. Högskolepoäng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level) in physics or similar relevant field, or (ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. Poäng; corresponding to 180 ECTS credits) of highereducation studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007 or equivalent competence.

The application should include a description of past research accomplishments, curriculum vitae, and names and contact information of references.

The IDRC Internship awards provide exposure to research for international development through a program of training in research management and grant administration under the guidance of IDRCprogram staff. The internship is designed to provide hands-on learning experiences in research program management - in the creation, dissemination and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective.

In principle, IDRC supports research on all parts of the developing regions of the world. At this time, the Centre Training and Awards Program is not supporting awards which involve research in Burma, Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Eastern Europe or Central Asia.

The intern will undertake a program of research on the topic submitted when competing for the internship award, and will be trained in the techniques of research management through hands-on experience with the Centre's policies and practices for grant administration under the mentorship of a Program Officer(s).

Program:
Internships will be considered for a program of training and research responding to IDRC’s research priorities. IDRC’s research activities focus on four Program Areas:

  • Social and Economic Policy
  • Environment and Natural Resource Management
  • Information and Communication Technologies ICT for Development
  • Innovation, Policy and Science
The interns will undertake a program of research on the topic submitted (see the Programming Units' requirements below) when competing for the Internship during a part (often around 50% ) of their time and will be trained in the techniques of research management through hands-on work experience with their chosen program’s programming and practices. They usually work under the mentorship of a Program Officer(s).

For approximately 50% of the time the selected candidates will be expected to provide support to management and program staff in some of the following areas: synthesis of project outcomes; production of publications and dissemination materials or activities on research results; participation in team meetings; research tasks to locate, review and synthesize relevant material; preparation of state of the art reviews; preparation of correspondence, reports and presentations; assistance with the organization of meetings, workshops and seminars; preparation of minutes; updating and maintaining databases; and maintenance of the website; exchange with other institutions working on a broad range of issues related to programming.

Duration

Internships are tenable for a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months at IDRC headquarters in Ottawa or in a Regional Office. Developing-country nationals residing in their home country (or another country) must hold their internships in the appropriate Regional Office.

Number of Awards
Approximately nineteen (19)

Employment Status
Interns doing their internship in Canada will receive a salary in a range from CA$36 754 to CA$42 548 per year, depending on qualifications and experience. They will be considered as full-time term employees of the Centre. Benefits include contributions to Employment Insurance, Employer Health Tax and the Canada Pension Plan and 4% in lieu of vacation leave. Some travel and research expenses will also be supported, up to a maximum of CA$10 000. The salary range and benefits for interns located in the Regional Offices will vary according to regional conditions.

Relocation of Interns
Developing country Interns should be based, preferably and where possible, in the IDRC Regional Office closest to their own country. In cases where this is not possible, or where the programming unit feels that there are compelling reasons for the Intern to be based in Ottawa for mentoring and for their research program, IDRC will cover the travel costs from their country to Ottawa to take up the internship (and return at the end of the internship).

Eligibility
The program is aimed at candidates who, through demonstrated achievements in academic studies, work or research, have shown interest in the creation and utilization of knowledge from an international perspective. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and citizens of developing countries may submit an application. They must be either currently registered in a Master's Program or have completed a Master's Degree in a recognized university. Their research must focus on a developing country. Candidates need not be affiliated with an institution. They may participate in internships as part of an academic requirement.

Deadline
Deadline for receipt of applications: 12 September 2009 (awards will be announced in December 2009).

Selection
IDRC staff will review the applications and select successful candidates.

Applications
The application must show how the intern will accomplish a set of learning objectives. IDRC requires applicants to specify only one Program Initiative to match their interest. At its discretion, IDRC may forward the application to a second Program Initiative.

The specifications for Centre Internships are linked to current program priorities and structure. The Centre reserves the right to change program priorities and structure and this may determine the final choice and allocation of Centre Internships.

Applications will be evaluated according to criteria, such as relevance to sustainable and equitable development and to IDRC priorities, quality of the research proposal and suitability of the candidate.

If there are ethical questions connected with the research, the applicant may, at IDRC’s discretion, be required to submit the appropriate approval for the Ethic’s Committee of the University.

in disciplines that are of special relevance for the social, political and economic development of their home country. With the knowledge and experience acquired in Germany the scholarship holders should later contribute to the establishment of democratically oriented economic and social systems aimed at overcoming social tensions. In addition, the training at German institutions of higher education should especially qualify the scholarship holders as partners in political and economic cooperation with Germany. With this programme, DAAD intends to contribute to the support of Good Governance and civil society structures in selected partner countries and regions.

Who can apply?

The scholarship scheme is open to candidates from Africa, Latin America, South Asia, Southeast Asia as well as from countries in the Middle East. Target group Very well qualified graduates with a first university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) who in the future want to actively contribute to the social and economic development of their home countries. The scholarships are offered both for young graduates without professional experience and for mid-career professionals.

What is fundable?

The scholarships are (generally) for two-year Master courses at a German institution of higher education. The successful candidates will study on one of the selected Master courses listed below. The courses have an international orientation and are taught in German and/or English.

The scholarship holders will study in groups and be offered special tutoring at their host institutions. Furthermore, there is the possibility of networking events for participants in different courses and their attendance at tailor-made summer-schools.

Before taking up their Master studies the scholarship holders will be placed on German courses in Germany for normally 6 months (this also applies to scholarship holders in Master courses taught in English).

DAAD pays a monthly scholarship rate of currently 750 €. The scholarship also includes contributions to health insurance in Germany. In addition, DAAD grants an appropriate travel allowance as well as a study and research subsidy and in applicable cases rent subsidies and / or family allowances.

Selection In addition to the study results achieved so far, the main criterion for selection is a convincing description of the subject-related and personal motivation for the study project in Germany and the expected benefit after the return to the home country.

For Master courses taught in German or in German and English, good knowledge of German (ideally at completed A 2 level at the time of application) is an advantage for being able to pass the German language test required for admission to the Master programme at the end of the six-month preparatory German course. For courses taught
in English, proof of good knowledge of English (generally a minimum of 550 TOEFL scores or equivalent) is required.

The university degree should have been obtained during the six years before the application for the scholarship. Applicants cannot be considered if they have been in Germany for more than one year at the time of application.

All Master courses have further additional requirements that must be fulfilled by the applicants at any case.
