The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) has today announced a new pay regime that slashes monthly salaries and allowances of top State officers as the government moves to trim the public wage bill.
In a new salary structure for the period between 2017 and 2022, the fixed monthly pay for the next president has been reduced to Sh1.44 million from Sh1.65 million, while his deputy will take home Sh1.227 million from the present Sh1.402 million.
Speakers of the Senate and National Assembly will earn Sh1.155 million from Sh1.32 million, with their deputies pay is fixed at Sh924,000 from Sh1.056 million.
Leaders of Majority and Minority in the Senate and National Assembly will now earn Sh765,188 from Sh1.020 million.
Members of senate, cabinet secretaries and the chief of the Defence Forces have had their monthly pay trimmed to Sh924,000 from present Sh1.056 million.
Attorney-General Githu Muigai, who is currently the best paid public servant, will also have his pay cut to to Sh924,000.
Principal secretaries, the vice chief of the Defence Forces and commander of the Kenyan Army, the director-general of National Intelligence Service and the Inspector-General of Police will now take home Sh765,188, down from Sh874,500 they currently earn.
Commanders of the Kenya Air Force and Navy's monthly fixed pay will now fall to 747,461 from 854,241.
Allowances abolished
Most of the fat allowances have also been harmonised and some abolished in the new remuneration structure.
"The ultimate goal of SRC is to bring the wage bill, which currently stands at 52 per cent, to sustainable levels of 35 per cent of domestic revenue," SRC chairperson Sarah Serem told a press conference.
"This will go along way in ensuring that the public sector wage bill is within the threshold provided for by the Public Finance Management Act."
The SRC said government will save about Sh8.853 billion annually with the new structure in what it says will ensure equity, fairness and harmony in remuneration and benefits.
