Private sector basic pay up

THE government yesterday announced new minimum wages for the private sector with miners getting 350,000/- basic salary a month effective November 1, this year.
The Minister for Labour, Employment and Development, Mr John Chiligati told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday that minimum wages would vary according to sectors.
The minimum wage in the mining sector is now 350,000/- with the exception of those extracting salt and chalk which are considered to be small scale operations, he said.
Other high paying sectors include communication, transportation and air services transport where the minimum wage will also be 350,000/-. Workers in telecommunication, ship building and stevedores will be paid basic salary of 300,000/- a month, he said.
The minimum wage in commercial media houses will be 250,000/- a month and 150,000/- for charitable services such as religious newspapers, television and radio stations, he said.
Juicy also are wages in clearing and forwarding companies with basic 230,000/- a month followed closely by salaries for passenger and cargo ships at 225,000/- a month. Workers in fishing vessels will be paid 196,000/- a month, the minister said.
Basic salaries in big factories, major businesses and banks will be 150,000/- a month and 80,000/- a month in small and medium enterprise.
Security guards in foreign owned companies will get minimum 105,000/- and their fellows in local firms 80,000/- a month.
Perhaps more raised in real terms were salaries for domestic workers. Those working for diplomatic staff will now be entitled to 90,000/- minimum pay a month. Domestic workers for other entitled officers will be paid 80,000/- and 65,000/- a month in ordinary households, the minister said.
