Ethiopia's rebel fighters say a government blockade on the northern region of Tigray is to blame for the devastation that has left nearly a million people on the verge of starvation.

But the federal government has blamed the situation on them.

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which is fighting the government, says the health system in the region has been crippled, and measures against Covid are non-existent.

It also says the economy is suffering, with banks having to close and power blackouts forcing companies out of business.

The rebels say the international community’s reluctance to take meaningful action against Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government has prolonged the blockade.

However, the federal government in Addis Ababa says the rebels themselves have been obstructing aid efforts, and attacking electricity workers.
