Germany government has committed 56 Billion Tshs (20 Million Euros) as an emergency funding to support covid 19 repercussions for the Tanzania’s tourism sector. The commitment was made by the Germany Ambassador HE Regine Hess during her official visit in Serengeti National Park.
The funding will be used in Selous Game Reserve, Serengeti and Nyerere National Parks respectively. The support is a result of the recently global pandemic which has brought an immense pressure in the tourism sector due to a decline in revenues in the protected areas.
Ambassador Hess said the funding shall support TANAPA and TAWA’s formidable work and shall be used to cushion the decreased revenues due to less tourist numbers. The Project shall be named: Emergency Funding for Conservation of Biodiversity Support in Tanzania.
Germany has been one of the most important bilateral partners for Tanzania when it comes to the protection of biodiversity and the precious National Parks and Game Reserves. This is rooted in the friendship between Baba wa Taifa Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Prof. Bernhard Grizmek, former President of the German Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS).
This year we are celebrating the 60th anniversary of the successful Tanzanian-Germany cooperation. The two countries have been close partners in conservation ever since and Germany has spent almost TZS 300 Billion (more than 106 Million Euros) in the past five years, saving and protecting Tanzania’s unique nature and wildlife worldwide.
On his part, the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism Hon. Dr. Damas Ndumbaro (MP) commended the support from the Germany Government. “This additional new funding will greatly strengthen the protected area authorities’ capacity to manage conservation activities in key ecological systems .We appreciate the contribution of our German partners to the protection of these two ecosystems, Nyerere and Serengeti,” said Minister Ndumbaro.
The funding will be used to provide a much needed assistance to TANAPA and TAWA in improving and enhancing conservation efforts of the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania. As emphasized by Mwalimu Nyerere in Arusha Manifeso “The conservation of wildlife and wild places calls for specialist knowledge, trained manpower and money, and we look to other nations to cooperate with us in this important task- the success or failure of which not only affect the continent of Africa but the rest of the world as well”. Overall, both new additional funding will assist in increasing the scope of execution of critical conservation activities; and contribute towards the objective of improving relations between the protected areas authorities and communities across Serengeti and Nyerere Ecosystems.
The Minister reiterated commitment of the Government of United Republic of Tanzania in continuing efforts to conserve biodiversity. The Minister urged all conservation partners to follow footsteps of the Germany Government in complimenting Government’s efforts in ensuring survival of wildlife for present and future generation.
