Cord leaders on Wednesday vowed to defy a ban on their rallies that had been scheduled for this weekend.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula said their rallies in Eldoret and Ntulele in Narok County will proceed without fail.

The rallies are scheduled for this Friday and Saturday respectively. The two rallies have been cancelled by the police.

At a news conference in Nairobi on Wednesday, Mr Odinga said most of their rallies held in various parts of the country had been peaceful despite "prediction of doom and chaos being fuelled by the Jubilee government."

He flanked by several Cord MPs and Senators.

Mr Odinga said the police had no role in cancelling their rallies, pointing out that their work was to adequately protect them as well as those who will attend the meetings.

“The work of the police is to provide us with security. Ours was to give them notice that we will be holding a rally. We are not aware of any danger in Eldoret as has been claimed. We shall go on with the rallies whether they like it or not,” he said.

Added the former PM: “And we have not used our meetings to incite Kenyans…they all have been peaceful.”

Mr Wetangula, who read the statement on behalf of the coalition, said they saw a deliberate effort by the government to stop the opposition from holding rallies.

the issue here is not to cancel or stop the political rallies conducted by CORD rather than removing the Kenyan military troops in SOMALIA

The issue here is that the Jubilee Govt has no powers to ban rallies as this infringes on the rights of the Kenyan citizenry as enshrined in the Constitution. It's that simple but we have people who want to make sure they fart the loudest so as to impress the powers that be.

I don't think it is prudent to resort to this. This is careless and might actually cause chaos. The best thing to do is to provide enough police officers on the ground and let Raila and Co. go on with their rallies.

What are these rallies main theme this time around? It is from the message that one can tell whether it is wise for the police to bun them. Guess work is not allowed here

Yes Kenya has a good constitution that guarantees freedom assembly anywhere everywhere ndani ya KE.
Duh, aisee. Mwambie hayo Mheshimiwa Uhuru akishavuta bangi! Inakuweje mashehe wanauwawa bila kufikishwa mahakamani? Ndio katiba inavyosema sio?

The Cord alliance on Friday gave the government a 10-day ultimatum to convene a national dialogue conference to avoid the planned Saba Saba rally on July 7.

Speaking as he took his nationwide rallies to Eldoret, opposition leader Raila Odinga said he would not be cowed by threats of arrest following recent summons by police of his colleagues for alleged hate speech.

He told President Uhuru Kenyatta to heed his call for the dialogue.

"Ndugu yangu, njoo tuongee mapema, naona mawingu yametanda. Fanya halahala tusinyeshewe (My brother, let's have early dialogue as the clouds are gathering. Hurry so that we are not caught in the rain)," appealed Mr Odinga to loud cheers from the huge crowd at Eldoret's 64 Stadium.

"Today is the 27th and there are 10 days to Saba Saba. Let us dialogue or else," said Mr Odinga as the crowd chanted
"Saba Saba, all we want is liberation!"

Mr Odinga said it was the constitutional right of Kenyans to hold rallies and Cord would not be intimidated.

The Eldoret rally went ahead after police backed down on an earlier ban. They had cited the likelihood of violence.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago had also tried to block the rally.

Narrating a history of Kenya's "second liberation" campaign that started in 1990 against President Daniel arap Moi's single-party regime, Mr Odinga warned that history would repeat itself unless the government agrees to a national dialogue.

He also urged President Kenyatta to implement the recommendations of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission and tackle historical land injustices.

"I and retired President Kibaki signed the report and recommendations. It is pointless for the President to shelve it. It is time the report is implemented," said Mr Odinga.

He castigated what he said was Jubilee's unmet promises, citing the schools laptop project, high cost of agricultural inputs, insecurity, youth unemployment and cost of living.

"This government has failed to protect Kenyans and their property. All we have is rampant corruption that has derailed the economy," said Mr Odinga.

He added it was ridiculous to pay over Sh1 billion to "crooks" while over Sh16 billion was in foreign accounts.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetang'ula accused the government of failing the electorate. "Jubilee has breached the social contract they signed with the people. If leaders cannot lead, those they lead can lead," he said in reference to the impending Saba Saba demonstrations.

He further said no amount of intimidation or threats would stop Cord from holding rallies.

Siaya Senator James Orengo said they Cord leaders were not afraid of arrest when championing the rights of Kenyans.

"We have a constitutional right to hold meetings anywhere, including in Eldoret. President Kenyatta has to agree to a national dialogue not as a matter of choice but in accordance with the law and Constitution," he declared.

He dismissed President Kenyatta's an invitation to Mr Odinga "for a cup of tea", saying if the President wants to offer "a cup of tea," then he should extend the invitation to the 40 million Kenyans.

He added that it was cowardly for the government to resort to intimidation by arresting opposition members.

"We dialogued with President Moi while fighting for the second liberation and no amount of detention or torture will scare us from championing the rights of Kenyans," he said.

WELCOME TO ELDORET 'BABA': Cord supporters at the Cord Eldoret rally in 64 Stadium follow speeches at the podium.

Friday, June 27, 2014 - 00:00 -- BY STAR REPORTER

Cord leader Raila Odinga has demanded for the removal of the IEBC. Speaking at a Cord rally today in 64 Stadium, Eldoret, the former Prime Minister said the "animal called IEBC must go home."

"We must have a fair referee to avoid problems that affected other countries like the Ivory Coast because of a bad electoral system," said the Cord leader.

Raila also said the Jubilee government has failed to provide security for Kenyans. He said it is the responsibility of any government to protect lives and property of all Kenyans.

"They have always promised to take action but nothing has been done and that shows they have been unable to take care of the security of Kenyans," said Raila adding that the insecurity incidents in Coast region, Baringo ,Marsabit, Mandera, Busia and other areas were annoying Kenyans.

Raila further said that poverty has increased beyond comprehension under the Jubilee regime. The opposition leader demanded the implementation of the TJRC report saying that there can be "no peace without justice."Raila also told the rally "Hata nipigwe mateke sitarudi nyuma" (Even if I am kicked I will not turn back.)

Cord co-principal Moses Wetangula who also addressed the rally said the coalition was not interested in overthrowing the government but would work to defeat President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto during the next elections. Wetangula said the government was intimidating some leaders using claims of hate speech against them.

The Bungoma senator said the dialogue proposed by Cord was meant to help rectify issues going wrong in the country.

"Saba Saba is almost near and we have asked them that we go on the table but they are delaying," said Wetangula adding that Cord would have the mother of all rallies at Uhuru Park on the July 7th if the government does not engage with Cord in dialogue.

Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo who also addressed the rally faulted Uasin Gishu governor Jackson Mandago for first banning then allowing today's rally to take place in Eldoret."Jackson Mandago can go to hell. He has no authority to give us right to hold rallies," said Midiwo. He further told the rally that people who had settled in the Mau forest are now being evicted by the Jubilee administration over claims that their title deeds are fake."Some people are more Kenyans than others," Midiwo said.
