The number of standard gauge railway (SGR) freight trains on the Mombasa-Nairobi route are set to increase to seven daily by Friday setting the stage for stiff competition with road transporters.

Transport Principal Secretary Paul Maringa said six trains carrying 654 containers were leaving Mombasa daily to the inland container depot in Nairobi.

However, by tomorrow seven trains will be leaving the port ferrying some 752 containers. Some 1,300 containers arrive at the port daily. Although one cargo train has capacity to remove 150 trucks from the roads daily, some 3,000 trucks still ferry cargo on the Mombasa-Nairobi route daily.

Prof Maringa said that only goods destined for Nairobi were being ferried. He urged road transporters to focus on the last mile, saying it was for the good of the country for the SGR to succeed.

He said some 2,300 containers that had been cleared were awaiting collection by owners resulting in congestion. He said plans were underway to ensure that goods were collected within six hours after being cleared and those that overstay attract heavy charges. Prof Maringa said 1,000 cargo tracking devices were being used to speed up cargo offloading and that the equipment will be increased to 3,000.

The devices are a fixed on containers and have to be returned to Mombasa after goods reach Nairobi.

The tracking enable monitoring of the goods through computers or mobile phones.

Na bado wacha kwanza ianze kubeba bulk cargo kunaeleweka tu!!!

The SGR is currently generate revenue for partly footing the OPEX. Don't think will clear the CAPEX by its own generated revenue. We have to view these projects on the broader perspective, the EIRR, not narrowed ourselves to think on only FIRR.

White Elephant, but how?
I used the words 'so called', as in its them (naysayers) who were calling it a white elephant, now am telling them to watch the space as the rail keeps on adding more cargo.. don't be suprised if three years from now, the Nairobi ICD will need futher expansion because of over capacity

Ooh, i see.

loose bulk cargo like clicker, grains, will be offloaded directly to SGR wagons....hehehe... this type of cargoes makes up like 50% of the goods through the port apart from containerised cargo....
tukishachukua hio biashara SGR is a done deal. hata hakuna haja ya kutafuta biashara nyengine

/ SAMSON provides eco hoppers to Port of Mombasa

Kenya Port Authority celebrates reception of four cutting-edge ecological hoppers to improve its dry bulk import process and also mitigate environmental damage from fugitive dust. These are the first dust filtration import hoppers to be provided with ATEX certification. This equipment was sourced to fulfil the aims of TradeMark East Africa/Kenya Port Authority Port Resilient Infrastructure Programme to improve port facilities whilst minimising the environmental impact of port operations.
There has been considerable investment in the future capabilities of the Port of Mombasa with the aim of creating a regional hub to support trade in the area over the coming years. Implementation of the Mombasa Resilient Infrastructure Programme encourages the development of port efficiency measures whilst minimising energy consumption and protecting the important natural resources.
Following a lengthy tender process SAMSON Materials Handling Ely/UK was successful in winning the contract to provide TMEA/KPA with four eco hoppers to import clinker, coal and gypsum. To adhere to strict performance and environmental requirements these eco hoppers are decked with inlet grills with suction capacity, a reverse-jet cleaning system, air compressors, a flex-flap filtration system creating a pressure differential between the inner and outer hopper areas and dust filters on three sides of the hopper.
The SAMSON eco hoppers are fully mobile with powered travel and crabbing functionality which lets them be positioned alongside the vessel for unloading and which will allow them to be manoeuvred off the quay and freeing up important space when not required.
These are the first ever ecological hoppers to be provided with ATEX certification, which emphasises the increased awareness of safety and environmental issues in conjunction with high performance. Peak rates of 700 tph per hopper are expected to considerably improve the import capabilities of the port.

I have told you time and again to improve your thinking capacity as far as measuring economic impact of a national infrastructure is concerned.
Stop observing it from one sided angle only, take time to think about spillover effects, socio-economic benefits like reduced costs of trading goods, increased shipment of goods, access to modern rail for all communities along the infrastructure....I can go on and on, I should recommend some book to you so you can shut up for a month or so while reading it.

U r a net importer of clinker n grain from Tanzania just like the rest of EA member states! Convince me why would Rwanda n Uganda stop importing our clinker n prefer the one from Mombasa imported from abroad?

Isnt central corridor open for business all the way to Kampala via lake Victoria? Arent clinker producers in Tanga using central railway? R Rwanda n Uganda not net producers of grain? Wacha upumbavu!

BTW u sound as if Tanzanian port will never acquire such equipments. It's JPM government don't forget digitalization of one stop center at TPA is a way forward.
