Shinyanga needs Sh1.3bn to execute power projects

The deputy minister for Energy and Mineral, Mr Adam Malima, said the government has embarked on the implementation of the presidential pledges made during the head of State's visits to Kahama District. A total of Sh1.3 billion is needed to implement the electricity projects in Shinyanga Region out of Sh140 million required to implement presidential promises, Parliament was told here. The deputy minister for Energy and Mineral, Mr Adam Malima, said the government has embarked on the implementation of the presidential pledges made during the head of State's visits to Kahama District. He said the government has concluded preliminary survey to assess the cost of transformers for installation at Nyashimbi and Puni villages in Shinyanga Region. "Evaluation of the same started in February, 2011 and was completed in March 2011," said Mr Malima. According to the survey, each village needs one transformer with the capacity of 100 KVA and a transmission line of KVA 0.4 and a stretch of 2 kilometers long. "Electricity will be supplied from the Ibadakuli source, in Shinyanga Municipality to Kahama District through villages and the cost for each village will be Sh69,566,089.87," said Mr Malima. He said it was agreed that the project be executed by Tanesco, but no funds were allocated in the current budget due to financial constraints facing Tanesco."My ministry has directed Tanesco to submit the proposal and evaluation report to the government through Rural Energy Agency (REA) to be short-listed in the projects to be funded in future. He was responding to a question by Mr Ahmed Ali Salum, (MP for Solwa-CCM) who had asked the government to explain the time frame for implementing presidential promises at Nyashimbi and Puni villages. In a supplementary question by Mr James Lembeli (MP for Kahama - CCM) who sought to know the implementation of presidential promises to supply electricity to Kahama, Mr Malima told the House that the district has seven projects which need between Sh350 million and Sh400 million to implement.He elaborated that Shinyanga Region produces 60 MW out of which 50 MW are used by four large scale consumers.
