Kharkov has existed under a Ukrainian flag for just 33 years out of the last 370:

1654 - Officially founded as a outpost for the Russian Empire to defend against Crimean Tatar slave raids.

1917 - Following the Russian Revolution, the Soviet leadership makes Kharkov the administrative capital of the Ukrainian SSR.

The thinking of the Soviets at the time was that the USSR was too big to fail, so putting Russian territory and cities under Ukrainian administration was considered internal juggling.

1991 - Due to the chaotic breakup of the USSR, Kharkov and other former Russian territories end up under the Ukrainian flag.

Ethnic Russians living in these territories are promised a degree of cultural autonomy, in return for their support on the Ukraine independence vote

Ukraine's military chief said on Sunday its forces are doing all they can to hold the line in Kharkiv - with Moscow claiming another five villages on Saturday - but they are facing a "difficult situation".
