FACTBOX: Russian troops take Krupets back: situation in Kursk Region

Kiev lost up to 340 servicemen and 19 armored vehicles, including five Bradley infantry fighting vehicles throughout the day

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the Ukrainian armed forces have lost somewhere in the vicinity of 340 servicemen over the day, and total losses for the entire time of hostilities in the region now stand at around 2,640 military personnel. The Russian Armed Forces have defeated the enemy in the Krupets settlement in the Kursk Region, regaining control of the territory, the ministry reported. Major General Apti Alaudinov, deputy head of the Main Military and Political Department of the Russian Armed Forces and commander of the Akhmat special forces, reported that the Russian military had cleared Martynovka of Ukrainian troops.

Most of the residents in border areas have been evacuated, the Emergencies Ministry said.

Ukraine's losses

Alaudinov's statements
- The Russian Armed Forces have mopped up Martynovka from Ukrainian troops.

- Russian troops have begun to clear the Sujan area of the enemy and have also set up "barriers."

- Work is underway to block the Ukrainian armed forces from entering the area.

Evacuation
- The majority of people living in the Kursk Region's border areas have been temporarily evacuated and are now safe, said Artyom Sharov, Deputy Director of the Information Policy Department of the Russian Emergencies Ministry.

- Over 720 people have been moved to secure locations over the past 24 hours, either independently or by organized convoys.

- Over 9,500 residents, who left their homes in the border areas of the region, are staying in temporary accommodation centers.

- Emergencies Ministry convoys delivered 360 tons of humanitarian cargoes to the Kursk Region over the day, bringing the overall figure to 1,300 tons.

KURSK, August 15. Bomb disposal experts from the Russian Emergencies Ministry swept over six acres of land of explosives in the Kursk Region in the past day, ministry spokesman Artyom Sharov said.

"Over six acres of land were cleared of explosive devices in the past 24 hours. Nearly 50 explosive devices were deactivated," he noted at a briefing.

The Emergencies Ministry urged local residents to stay away from suspicious items and contact emergency services in case they found anything like that

Ukraine’s advance into Russia’s Kursk Region appears to have weakened the front in the Donetsk People’s Republic, where Russian forces have advanced on the key junction of Pokrovsk, Politico has reported.

Kiev sent several thousand troops across the Russian border last week, intending to force Moscow to pull reserves from elsewhere. Instead, Russia has continued to hammer Ukrainian positions in Donbass.

“I would say things have become worse in our part of the front,” Ivan Sekach, spokesman for Ukraine’s 110th Mechanized Brigade, told Politico. “We have been getting even less ammo than before and Russians are pushing.”

The 110th is currently deployed on the Pokrovsk portion of the front, where Russian forces have made significant gains in the past 24 hours. The Ukrainian military would not confirm any details to Politico, saying only that it was reinforcing the area.

Pokrovsk is the key road and rail hub for supplying Ukrainian forces in Donbass. By taking the town, Russian forces would turn the flank of the Ukrainians still holding on to Chasov Yar, Konstantinovka, and Toretsk.

Ukrainian soldiers and officials have told Western media that the incursion in Kursk was intended to seize some territory that could be used as a bargaining chip in talks with Russia, as well as forcing Moscow to divert troops from Donbass.

Instead, it was Kiev that stripped its front line of men and equipment for the Kursk adventure. Meanwhile, Moscow has ruled out any talks with “terrorists.”

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, over the past 24 hours alone, the Ukrainian forces in Kursk Region have sustained up to 340 casualties and lost 19 armored vehicles, including five US-made Bradley IFVs.

WASHINGTON, The attack on the Kursk Region will seriously harm elite units of the Ukrainian armed forces in the long-term perspective, says Jasen Castillo, Co-Director of the Albritton Center for Grand Strategy, in his op-ed for the Responsible Statecraft website.

"My worry is that in the longer term, Ukraine, which is facing dangerous shortfalls in manpower and equipment, will deplete elite units that would have been needed elsewhere," the expert said.

In his opinion, the attack on the Kursk Region could be compared to Nazi Germany’s 1944 attack on the Western front, which surprised the Allies.

The German troops "made gains, and ended with a defeat at the Battle of the Bulge, which then wasted manpower and equipment it needed months later on the Eastern Front," he noted."

The massive attack of Ukrainian troops at the Kursk Region started on August 6. Missile alarm has been declared repeatedly in the region. Most of the residents of border areas have been temporarily relocated to safety, over 720 people were evacuated in the past 24 hours, according to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations. According to the ministry, over 9,500 people are currently in temporary accommodation facilities. A state of federal emergency has been declared in the region.
