Ukrainian forces fragmented in border area near Kursk — Russian commander

According to the report, "by means of aerial and ground-based reconnaissance," the enemy is being tracked and hit by heavy fire

MOSCOW, Ukrainian units have broken off into small groups, the commander of a T-72B3 tank crew with the call sign Chek said. His fighters are currently deployed in the borderline Russian region of Kursk.

"We are currently busy with our mission to prevent the enemy from breaking deeper into the Kursk Region. Everybody’s involved, including aerial and ground-based reconnaissance," the senior Russian serviceman recounted in a video posted on the Heroes of Z channel on Telegram. "The enemy has broken into minor groups. Also, by means of aerial and ground-based reconnaissance, they are being tracked and hit by heavy fire. We are providing fire support to units engaged in combat with Ukrainian troops," he said.

The Russian commander commended his crew for their teamwork and readiness to perform combat tasks.

Ukrainian troops sustaining heavy casualties in Kursk area, says POW

The captured soldier said that Ukraine’s military command had punished him several times for his refusal to fight

MOSCOW, Ukraine’s military is sustaining heavy casualties in battles with Russian forces in the Kursk Region, Ukrainian prisoner-of-war (POW) Vitaly said on Tuesday.

The captured Ukrainian soldier said that he had been mobilized and assigned to Ukraine’s 92nd assault brigade as a driver.

"Very heavy casualties. They send people like us [into battle]. They assign an objective and mobilized people like me. They tell us to go to a position. But where must we go? They say we will show you a point and you will go there. People go there and that’s all. I transported them there so many times but none of them returned," the captured Ukrainian soldier said in a video released by Russia’s Defense Ministry.

The Ukrainian POW said that Ukraine’s military command had punished him several times for his refusal to fight.

"I told them that even if you had brought me here, I would not fight anywhere. I said that I would only transport personnel and take them back but would not go to positions, fight or shoot anyone. Sometimes I was placed in a cage and sat there. Now they [Ukrainian troops] have no military commander there: he has been shot dead by his fellow servicemen because of his attitude. I sat in a dog cage a couple of times for refusing to do something," the captured Ukrainian soldier said.

NEARLY ALL CHINESE BANKS ARE REFUSING TO PROCESS PAYMENTS FROM RUSSIA, REPORT SAYS

The impact of the West's sanctions just seems to be getting worse and worse for Russia.

Now, 98% of Chinese banks — even small regional ones — are refusing to accept direct Chinese payment transfers from Russia, Alexey Razumovsky, the commercial director of the payments company Impaya Rus, told the pro-Kremlin media outlet Izvestia.

Such issues appear to have intensified over the past three weeks, as smaller Chinese financial companies were still processing Russian payments in May and June, Izvestia reported.

Last month, the Russian outlet Kommersant reported that about 80% of bank transfers made in the Chinese yuan were bouncing back with no explanation after being stalled for weeks while banks decided whether they could transact.

Razumovsky told Izvestia the payment challenges with Chinese banks could contribute to supply-chain difficulties and inflation in Russia.

DOORS BETWEEN RUSSIA AND CHINESE BANKS ARE CLOSING

Since the invasion of Ukraine, Russia and its trade partners have skirted sanctions by using smaller banks and other payment modes or non-US-dollar currencies to circumvent the West's ban of some Russian banks from the widely-used SWIFT messaging system.

But the doors have been closing for these workarounds since December, when the US approved secondary sanctions targeting financial institutions that were helping Russia.

Alexey Poroshin, the general director of the investment and consulting firm First Group, told Izvestia that some financial institutions in China were even starting to reject payments in the ruble.

Poroshin said Chinese banks weren't keen on doing business with Russian companies through financial institutions in Hong Kong, a special administrative region under China.

Ekaterina Kizevich, the CEO of Atvira, a Russian foreign-trade consultancy, told Izvestia that Russian companies were still sending yuan to China via Russian bank branches on the mainland, but there was a 5% markup.

Many Chinese companies would still refuse payments from the Russian bank branches on the mainland, Impaya Rus' Razumovsky told the newspaper.

RUSSIA IS RUSHING TO SET UP ALTERNATIVE PAYMENT MECHANISMS

Russian businesses still have alternatives, such as conducting transactions through "friendly" third-party countries.

Russia is also rushing to set up alternative payment systems, including crypto, to facilitate trade

Russia and China are even planning to revive the age-old practice of barter trade to get around Western sanctions.

Russia's problems with paying Chinese suppliers would cut off a crucial pillar of support for its war against Ukraine, Joseph Webster, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council think tank, wrote in a June report.

"While Russia's exports help finance its war effort, its imports of industrial goods are vastly more important for sustaining the economic, political, and military dimensions of its war effort, at least in the short term," he wrote.

"Russia's imports prevent shortages, maintain political support for the war by stabilizing living standards, and, in some cases, facilitate military capabilities," Webster added..

Glide bomb wipes out Ukrainian brigade leaders – MOD (VIDEO

A Russian airstrike has destroyed a Ukrainian command post in Sumy Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has claimed, releasing footage of the overnight attack.

The strike took place early on Tuesday morning, the Russian military said. A supersonic Su-34 multipurpose jet deployed glide bombs against the target, which the ministry identified as operated by the 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian ground forces.

The aerial footage shows a dark cityscape with a road junction, which RT understands is located in the middle of the city of Glukhov, some 15km from the Russian border. A massive explosion erupts from one of the buildings, which is marked as a car repair shop on Google Maps. A secondary explosion soon follows.

The Russian military claimed the site was used by the 47th Mechanized Brigade as a command post and munitions depot. Ukrainian military personnel, including officers in leadership positions, were killed in the strike, the report said.

The ministry did not estimate the number of Ukrainian casualties, but unverified reports by military-focused online news media claim as many as 90 troops were killed, including 30 higher up the chain of command than regular soldiers.

Sumy Region borders Russia’s Kursk Region, where Kiev is currently trying to seize territory in an offensive operation launched two weeks ago. One of the goals of the incursion, as stated by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, is to establish a “buffer zone” to prevent Russian cross-border attacks. Moscow considers the incursion terrorist in nature, claiming that Kiev has been deliberately targeting civilians.

The Russian military estimated Ukrainian losses in the offensive at up to 3,800 as of Monday. The push has also cost Kiev hundreds of tanks and other pieces of heavy weaponry, many of which were provided by Western donors, according to the Russian military.

Kiev sustains roughly 350 casualties near Kursk in past day, enemy logistics under attack
According to the report, during the hostilities in the Kursk direction, the enemy has lost over 4,130 servicemen, 58 tanks, 27 infantry fighting vehicles, 50 armored personnel carriers, 299 armored combat vehicles

MOSCOW, August 20. /TASS/. Ukrainian forces have lost roughly 350 troops and 25 armored military vehicles in the Kursk direction over the past day, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.

In all, the enemy has lost over 4,130 troops since fighting began in the borderline Russian region.

Apty Alaudinov, commander of the Akhmat special forces commando unit and deputy chief of the Russian Army, said Ukrainian logistics in the Kursk area are under heavy attack.

TASS has gathered the key facts about the situation.

Operation to wipe out Ukrainian formations
- Units from the Battlegroup North, supported by army aviation and artillery fire, repelled Ukrainian assault attempts toward Borki, Korenevo, Kremyanoye and Russkaya Kanapelka.

- Russian warplanes struck concentrations of troops and military hardware of enemy reserves near the localities of Aleksandriya, Belopolye, Volnaya Sloboda, Vorozhba, Loknya, Mogritsa and Khoten in Ukraine’s Sumy Region.

- The operation to wipe out Ukrainian formations continues.

Enemy losses
- Enemy forces have lost roughly 350 troops and 25 armored military vehicles in the Kursk direction over the past day, including four tanks, an IFV, two APCs, 18 armored combat vehicles as well as eight cars, two mortars and a jamming station.

- Overall, during the hostilities in the Kursk direction, the enemy has lost over 4,130 servicemen, 58 tanks, 27 infantry fighting vehicles, 50 armored personnel carriers, 299 armored combat vehicles, 131 cars, 27 artillery guns, five missile systems, seven multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS), including three HIMARS rocket launchers, six electronic warfare systems, four engineering vehicles, including two heavy combat engineering vehicles and one UR-77 demining vehicle.

Enemy logistics paralyzed
- Ukrainian logistics have been under siege by Russian forces in the Kursk area, with the enemy sustaining "heavy losses" every day, Alaudinov said.

- The Russian military has wiped out Ukrainian lead units in the Kursk Region, stopping the enemy along the entire frontline, he added.

- Alaudinov believes that in attacking the region, Kiev's strategy was to get Russia to end hostilities in other sectors of the special military operation zone.

Assistance to locals
- Residents of border areas in the Kursk Region have been paid over 15 mln rubles (around $164,300) in financial assistance, deputy spokesman for the Russian Emergencies Ministry Aryom Sharov said.

MOSCOW, August 20. /TASS/. Apty Alaudinov, Akhmat commander, suspects there may be active duty service members from NATO countries serving as mercenaries in the Kursk area.

"You must understand that they have thrown together a ragtag army. And they have deployed as many foreign mercenaries as they could to there," the Russian commander told Rossiya-1 television. "I guess there are people among these foreign mercenaries who are in the military of the NATO bloc," he added.

Later, Alaudinov confirmed to TASS that he meant active NATO servicemen.
