South Korea has called on Russia to take immediate measures to stop the participation of North Korean troops in the war against Ukraine.

First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Hong-gyun summoned Russia's ambassador to Seoul, Georgy Zinoviev, to convey the "serious position of the government" and "strongly call for the immediate withdrawal of North Korean troops and the termination of relevant cooperation" with Pyongyang, according to a press release from South Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Kim noted that the military cooperation, which goes beyond military supplies, poses a serious threat to South Korea and the international community and violates numerous UN Security Council resolutions.

Kim "strongly condemned illegal military cooperation, including the deployment of North Korean troops, and sternly warned that South Korea will respond with all possible means, together with the international community, to any actions that threaten South Korea's core interests."

Ukraine uses borderline Kursk area's civilians as human shield — Russia

KURSK, October 22. /TASS/. The Ukrainian armed forces have been using civilians who stayed in Russia’s borderline Kursk area as a human shield, a serviceman of a Russian Armed Forces unit in the Kursk Region with call sign Artist told TASS.

"The civilian population is held in Sudzha and is being used as a cover. In fact, [the Ukrainian armed forces] are using them as a human shield, so that the aviation cannot strike," he said.

Despite that, the Russian forces continue to push the enemy towards the border, soldier with call sign Grach told TASS. "[The situation is] mostly good now. Cannot exactly say that [the enemy] is running away, but we could still say they are retreating," he said.

On August 6, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched a massive attack on Russia’s Kursk Region. A state of emergency has been introduced in the region. The borderline area residents are being evacuated to safety.

As the Russian Defense Ministry reported, Kiev has lost more than 25,400 troops and 169 tanks since the start of hostilities in the Kursk frontline area. The operation to destroy Ukrainian forces in the borderline Kursk Region is underway

Foreign mercenaries engaged in torturing civilians in Kursk Region — Russian soldier

KURSK, October 22. /TASS/. Foreign mercenaries, with Germans, Poles, Georgians and Canadians among them, are involved in torturing civilians in the Kursk Region's border areas, a fighter of one of the Russian Armed Forces units performing tasks in the Kursk direction, with the call sign Artist, told TASS.

"We found bodies, [mercenaries] tortured civilians, killed them, left them tied up in basements after torture. They killed and raped women. They don't care: they kill young people, women, children," he said.

The fighter emphasized that mercenaries work for money, so they don't care who they fight for. "There are Poles, Georgians, Germans. There are Canadians. They are formed as a mercenary unit. Mercenaries work for money, so they do not care. There is no nation, they come from all over the world. There were Colombians, too," Artist said.

North Korea has rejected accusations that it has sent troops to Russia to be used in the Ukraine conflict, dismissing the claims as an attempt to tarnish Pyongyang’s image.

Last week, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky accused North Korea of sending weapons and military personnel to Russia to take part in the hostilities. Later, South Korea also sounded the alarm over Pyongyang’s alleged movement of troops into the conflict zone, summoning the Russian ambassador to Seoul and demanding that Moscow “stop relevant cooperation” with the North.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has dismissed speculation that the North Korean military was taking part in hostilities with Ukraine as a “bogus story,” later adding that Moscow and Pyongyang “are developing relations in all areas.” He also recalled that the Pentagon had been unable to confirm the North Korean deployment, referring to earlier comments by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin
 
Most of the foreign fighters captured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces who were fighting for Russia are from Sri Lanka and Nepal, The Economist reports.

The publication notes that Russia recruited several thousand to tens of thousands of foreigners to send to war in Ukraine. Some were recruited through deception. Many have died, as the Russians use foreigners as expendable assault troops. Their families receive no compensation.

The Economist also reports that, in addition to citizens of Sri Lanka and Nepal, Ukrainian camps hold people from Serbia, Slovakia, Cuba, Morocco, India, Egypt, Brazil, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and various African nations.

"Instead of a buffer zone on Ukrainian territory, which the Russians had planned, we created a buffer zone near our border on Russian territory," Zelenskyy said following a meeting with military leadership.

"Kursk operation. We are maintaining our positions and preventing the enemy from expanding the war on our land," the president noted.
