Ukraine ‘has ceased to exist’ – ex-commander
The country’s leadership has hollowed out the nation and turned it into a “concentration camp,” Vladimir Shylov has said

The Ukrainian state has essentially ceased to exist, is plagued by endemic institutional failure and corruption, with Kiev's troops continuing to hold on by sheer will alone, a former commander has argued. He also warned that Ukraine’s defenses could collapse, allowing Russia to march all the way to the Dnieper River.

In an interview with Novyni Live on Monday, Vladimir Shylov, former commander of the 3rd Company in the 134th Separate Territorial Defense Battalion, lashed out at Ukraine’s political leadership, stating that the country has “ceased to exist” as a functional state due to widespread graft and mismanagement.

Shylov expressed concern that these woes could allow Russian forces to increase their gains, warning that they may be able to overrun frontline positions in Donbass and reach as far as the Dnieper River. The advances could be facilitated by internal chaos, he added, stating “In our country, everything is a mess...the front is holding only thanks to the Ukrainian people.”

Ukrainian leaders have transformed the nation into a “concentration camp,” Shylov claimed, highlighting systemic failures across all branches of government, including the legislative, executive, and judicial sectors.

Shylov also specifically criticized the country’s leader, Vladimir Zelensky, for what he described as a blatant neglect of his defense responsibilities, alleging that his government had ignored Western warnings of a Russian offensive prior to the special military operation, resulting in the inadequate preparation of Kiev’s forces.

The ex-commander went on to comment on Ukraine’s ongoing incursion into Russia’s Kursk Region, portraying it as a political ploy without any real strategic military value. He argued that the Ukrainian offensive had turned out to be a symbolic gesture which does not compensate for the substantial territorial losses Ukraine has suffered, particularly in Donbass.

Over the past several months, Russia has made significant gains in Donbass and elsewhere, with President Vladimir Putin noting that regular advances now amount to kilometers rather than hundreds of meters.

Russian Defense Minister Andrey Belousov said earlier this month that Ukraine had lost one million service members since February 2022, with more than half of that number in 2024 alone, adding that Moscow’s forces are in full control of the strategic initiative.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian battlefield commanders continue to complain of a critical shortage of manpower, despite Kiev implementing stricter mobilization rules and lowering the draft age from 27 to 25 this spring.

Dozens of Ukrainian drones shot down over Russia – MOD

Dozens of UAVs were neutralized in multiple regions on New Year’s Eve, the Defense Ministry has said

Russian air defenses have repelled a series of Ukrainian drone raids across the country, shooting down 68 UAVs on New Year's Eve, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow. One of the strikes damaged an oil depot in Smolensk Region, local officials said.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the ministry said 25 drones were intercepted overnight over Bryansk Region, 17 over Crimea, and 11 over Krasnodar Region. Other affected areas included Smolensk Region with 10 drones, Tver Region with two, and one each over Rostov, Kursk, and Kaluga Regions. All of the areas are located relatively close to the Ukrainian border.

Roman Zakharov, head of the Yartsevo district in Smolensk, confirmed that debris from one of the drones struck an oil depot in the area, causing a fuel spill and fire. Emergency services have contained the situation, and no residential areas are at risk, Zakharov said, urging residents to avoid drone debris if encountered, citing safety concerns.

No accountability in the Ukrainian armed forces – MP

Crimes committed by commanding officers get covered up, with those responsible either transferred or promoted, Anna Skorokhod claim.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces lack accountability, with commanding officers accused of crimes often transferred or promoted instead of facing consequences, MP Anna Skorokhod has claimed.

The lawmaker made the remarks in an interview with journalist Gennady Kiria, which was released on his YouTube channel on Friday. The Ukrainian command has been routinely burying assorted problems instead of properly investigating them, as well as regularly trying to derail probes by the Temporary Special Commission (TSK) established by the country’s parliament, she claimed.

“If something happens within a military unit, the military unit itself conducts an internal investigation,” Skorokhod said.

The country’s military command has effectively turned into a “fairly small circle where everyone knows each other and everyone drags in or pulls out [of trouble] someone of their own,” the MP claimed. Unless a problem gets public attention, no action is taken against those responsible, the legislator noted.

At the same time, the structure of the command has effectively resulted in a situation where “no punishment” effectively exists in the military, she said. The senior officers face no consequences even if allegations against them are brought to light and backed by solid evidence.

“We have had cases with specific crimes of the command, where probes have been conducted, there have been indications. And instead of punishing them, they are either transferred to an equivalent position or promoted. There’s no accountability in the military,” the MP stated.

Moscow slams Biden’s ‘bloodstained gift’ to Zelensky

The outgoing US administration is wasting taxpayer money to support the “failing Ukrainian project,” the Russian embassy has said

The Russian embassy in the United States has condemned outgoing President Joe Biden's announcement of an additional $2.5 billion military aid package for Ukraine, describing it as a cynical move aimed at prolonging the conflict.

In a statement issued on Monday, the embassy asserted that the White House's decision to announce the new assistance package on New Year's Eve was both cynical and calculated.

“Washington hopes that this bloodstained gift to Zelensky will symbolize a chance for the Kiev junta to provide ‘worthy’ resistance to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation,” the statement read. “The planners here still live in a dream world, hoping to inflict strategic defeat on our country.”

'Russia Overwhelms Ukraine and NATO' Technology in Special Op
28.12.2024

The special military operation in 2024 has shown significant advancements by Russia in both technology and logistics, retired US Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski, a former Pentagon analyst, tells Sputnik.

"Technology-wise and logistics-wise, Russia overwhelms Ukraine and what NATO has provided to Ukraine," Kwiatkowski says.
What Contributed to Russia’s Progress?

1.Superior equipment: The Russian military possesses advanced targeting and reconnaissance systems. A notable highlight was the late-year demonstration of the “impressive” Oreshnik missile, which Kwiatkowski describes as unmatched by Western capabilities.

2.Effective logistics: Russia maintained simple yet efficient logistics, ensuring a steady supply of essential “consumables,” such as ammunition and drones, to its troops.

3.Increased production despite sanctions: Russia has successfully ramped up the development and production of military equipment despite sanctions.

How Did NATO Set Ukraine Up for Failure?

A disparate collection of weapons provided by NATO led to logistical challenges and poor performance.

Ill-advised strikes deep inside Russia triggered retaliatory attacks, severely damaging Ukraine's electrical infrastructure.

A series of provocations failed to trigger Russia into overreacting but backfired through Moscow's precise responses.

Key Russian Gains:
Advancement rate: Russian forces are advancing at a rate of approximately 30 sq km per day.

Air defense successes: Russian air defenses intercepted 86 Storm Shadow and SCALP missiles, 215 ATACMS, 1,629 HIMARS projectiles, and over 27,000 drones.

Territorial gains: The Russian Armed Forces have liberated 4,500 sq km of territory previously occupied by the Ukrainian military, including over 190 settlements and key strategic towns like Avdeyevka and Ugledar.

Territory control: Kiev currently controls less than 1% of the Lugansk People's Republic and 25-30% of the Donetsk People's Republic, Zaporozhye, and Kherson regions.

Destroyed equipment: Over 58,000 units of Ukrainian military equipment have been destroyed, including 18,000 foreign weapons.

Ukrainian losses: In 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces suffered over 560,000 casualties (killed and wounded), with over 40,000 troops lost near Kursk alone.

Scott Ritter: ‘US Should Get the Hell Out of Ukraine’ to Resolve the Conflict.

Donald Trump earlier said that he is hammering out a concept to put an end to the Ukraine standoff.
The best option that US President-elect Donald Trump can use to help resolve the conflict in Ukraine is to curtail all American activities there, former US Marine Corps intelligence officer Scott Ritter has told the Dialogue Works YouTube channel.
"Trump has to understand and somebody really needs to sit down and whisper to him that the best way to solve this thing is to shut up and just get the hell out of there [Ukraine] with minimal fuss," Ritter pointed out.

Zelenskyy: When Putin was handed power over 25 years ago, 130+ billion cubic meters of gas flowed annually through Ukraine to Europe. Today, Russian gas transit is at zero. Weaponizing energy and blackmailing partners have cost Russia its most accessible market. Europe adapted, and now our task is to support Moldova's energy transformation and resist certain European politicians clinging to shady deals with Moscow. The more gas from true partners like the U.S., the faster Europe will overcome its energy dependence on Russia."

Russia strikes Ukrainian naval drone assembly site – MOD
The wave of attacks has also damaged military airfields and an energy facility, according to the Defense Ministry.

It added that the attack also targeted “infrastructure at military airfields and a location where unmanned boats were being assembled.”

The ministry did not specify the exact whereabouts of the Ukrainian targets, or provide any further details. However, Ukrainian media overnight and in the morning reported explosions in Kiev and the Ukrainian-controlled cities of Zaporozhye and Kherson, without elaborating on the extent of the destruction.
