Germany dramatically increased its uranium imports from Russia in 2024, bringing in 60.8 tons, a 70% jump from the previous year, according to a new report from Der Spiegel published on Friday.

The findings are based on data from Lower Saxony’s Ministry for Environment, Energy and Climate Protection.

The uranium is being processed at the Advanced Nuclear Fuels facility in Lingen, which operates under French ownership through Framatome, a division of energy giant EDF. The plant is gearing up to manufacture specialized nuclear fuel cells for the Soviet-designed WWER reactors still running in Eastern Europe. These power plants have historically depended on Russian-made fuel cells.

The German government noted that imports of uranium from Russia are not subject to any of the EU-wide sanctions imposed on Moscow.

West to discuss sending more weapons to Kiev in coming days, White House announces

WASHINGTON, January 3. /TASS/. Western countries will hold a meeting on sending more weapons to Ukraine in the next few days, National Security Council (NSC) Communications Advisor John Kirby told an online briefing.

"I think you're going to see another iteration of the Ramstein group here in coming days," he said.

"Certainly before the end of [the term of] our administration," Kirby specified when commenting on the timing of next discussions.

He also confirmed, without elaborating, that the United States will provide more security assistance to Ukraine soon. "I think you can also expect additional security assistance announcements coming with respect to Ukraine, you know, in coming days. <...> The Pentagon may be able to give you more information," Kirby concluded.

West does not rule out Ukrainian defense collapse soon — Russia’s intel agency

MOSCOW, January 3. /TASS/. The West notes Ukraine’s reduced capability to withstand the Russian army and does not rule out the collapse of the Ukrainian army’s defenses soon, the press office of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) said in a statement obtained by TASS on Friday.

"The information available to the SVR suggests that Western political elites note the Ukrainian army’s reduced capability to withstand the thrust by the Russian armed forces. It is not ruled out that the Ukrainian army’s defenses may collapse soon," it said.

The outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden seeks to avoid this scenario, making emphasis on "the deliveries of more sophisticated weapons, including longer-range missiles," the press office said.

"However, the White House admits that supplying the Ukrainian army with materiel only is not sufficient for stabilizing the frontline," it said.

The Ukrainian authorities have already prepared a decision to lower the mobilization age to 18 years and will adopt it shortly, the press office said.

"Washington demanded recently that … Vladimir Zelensky lower the mobilization call-up age to 18 years. Kiev has prepared the corresponding decision and will adopt it shortly," the press office said.

Eastern European countries are preparing for new waves of Ukrainian refugees after Kiev lowers the mobilization age to 18 years, it said.

"The Eastern European countries bordering Ukraine are already quietly preparing for receiving new waves of Ukrainian refugees who this time will be fleeing not from an imaginary threat from Russia but from a real danger of getting a one-way ticket to the frontline. It is believed that residents of the Kiev-controlled territories would be ready for everything to get out of the hands of the Ukrainian ruling regime that has sold off their lives to their masters on the other side of the ocean for a penny," the press office said.

"The West is aware that the conflict is of an existential nature for Russia and it will not back down. It has been clear from the very start that Kiev’s refusal to negotiate drives Ukrainians into slaughter. And Zelensky persistently follows the path of destroying the people of Ukraine," the press office said.

Currently, men aged 25-60 are subject to mobilization in Ukraine. In 2024, the Ukrainian authorities already once lowered the mobilization age: before April of last year, only men aged 27 could be mobilized. Despite this, the Ukrainian army experiences a serious shortage of manpower.

Hundreds of Soldiers From French-Trained Ukrainian Brigade Went AWOL Before Firing Single Shot

03.01.2025
Last October, Ukrainian media reported that since the beginning of 2022, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine registered about 60,000 criminal cases on the fact of unauthorized abandonment of a unit and about 30,000 cases on the fact of desertion.
Over 1,700 soldiers from Ukraine’s newly formed 155th Mechanized Brigade, trained and outfitted with great fanfare in France, deserted before reaching the battlefront, according to Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov.
French President Emmanuel Macron proudly announced the “elite” project alongside Volodymyr Zelensky last June. The brigade was meant to have more than 5,800 troops and be equipped with Leopard tanks and French CAESAR 155 mm howitzers. However, at least 50 members of the unit, also known as “Anne of Kiev,” went AWOL already during drills in France, Butusov wrote on social media.

Ukraine will receive electricity from Slovakia, despite Fico's threats, the country's state operator SEPS said.

The Slovak operator informs the iRozhlas publication that work continues in accordance with the current contract with Ukrenergo.

🤷🏻‍♂️ So it seems Fico's threats are just words, as the real restriction will be a breach of EU and Slovakian legislation.

Musk comments on story of Yakutian soldier who gave interview to RT

A clip of the Russian soldier prevailing in hand-to-hand combat with a Ukrainian servicemember had gone viral on social media.

Elon Musk has commented on a video of a Russian soldier who killed a Ukrainian servicemember with a knife in intense hand-to-hand combat, which went viral earlier this week. On Friday, the Russian soldier, an ethnic Yakut, gave an interview to RT, explaining why he did not finish his enemy off after he prevailed in the fight.

Earlier this week, several Russian Telegram channels shared a highly disturbing video captured from the body of a Ukrainian soldier which was filmed near the village of Trudovoye in Russia’s Donetsk Region that dates back to last autumn.

In the eight-minute clip, the now-deceased Ukrainian servicemember approaches a dilapidated building and engages in a short-range frenetic firefight with a Russian soldier. The two end up in a fierce fight, with the Ukrainian being stabbed several times.

As the Ukrainian is bleeding out while lying on the ground, he is heard telling the Russian: “Let me die in peace. I want to go on my own. Thank you. You were the greatest fighter in the world.” The Russian, also all covered in blood, stands up and leaves.

Commenting on the story, Musk wrote on X on Friday: “I have a WW1 trench knife embedded in my bedroom wall just in case. 1917 edition. More useful than a gun in close quarters.”

RT interviewed the Russian soldier in the clip, Andrey Grigoryev, 35, who joined the army as a volunteer. He revealed the circumstances that led to the knife fight, explaining that the Ukrainian had killed one of his friends and that he did not have any way of evading hand-to-hand combat, even though his enemy was bigger and stronger.

Asked why he did not deliver the final blow after the fight, Grigoryev said he knew his enemy would not be able to get up. “He had two knife neck wounds and was stabbed three times near the heart,” he said.

Commenting on the end of the fight and the Ukrainian’s remarks, Grigoryev said: “We – Russians and Yakuts – are taught from childhood: In any situation, you have to remain human.”

Heroic Russian Serviceman Recounts Hand-to-Hand Fight to the Death With Enemy Ukrainian

A valiant soldier from Yakutia in eastern Russia single-handedly took down several Ukrainian servicemen, and one of them in hand-to-hand combat to the death.
Andrey Grigoriev shared his experience of the deadly face-off with the Ukrainian in an interview with Russian media after a video of the incident went viral.
Grigoriev revealed that
"When we entered hand-to-hand combat, we both knew that one of us had to die," he said.
The Russian grabbed a sharp shard from the ground and stuck it in his opponent’s eye, forcing the Ukrainian to release the knife held against his neck.
“I took the knife and delivered the first blow to the back of his head,” Grigoriev recalled.
Several blows later, the Ukrainian pleaded with him: "Let me say goodbye to the sky, my mother, you’ve already killed me…You are the best fighter in the world."
Grigoriev said he didn’t deliver the final blow, convinced that his enemy would not survive two knife wounds to the neck and three stabs near the heart.
“From childhood, we, Russians… Yakuts, are taught that in any situation you need to remain human,” he added.
The fighter also took down two more counterattacking Ukrainians in that area of the Donetsk People’s Republic, recalling with a chortle: “I stirred up a lot of chaos there!”

Central Asian president reveals advice he gave Trump on Ukraine.

Russia is invincible, Kazakhstan’s Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told Trump.

Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev told US President-elect Donald Trump that Russia cannot be beaten on the battlefield and that Ukraine’s survival hinges entirely on Western aid, the central Asian leader revealed in an interview published on Friday by the outlet Ana-Tili.

Trump had sought his opinion on the matter during a telephone conversation last month, Tokayev said.

“The situation is unique: Russia is militarily invincible, and Ukraine hopes to survive the war with the help of its Western allies, at least not to lose it,” the Kazakh leader explained.

Ending the hostilities “depends on the will and desire of the heads of the conflicting countries and, of course, Trump himself as the leader of a world power,” the Kazakh president added.

While Kazakhstan is “not asking to be mediators anywhere,” it is “always ready to help in resolving international problems,” Tokayev noted.

Astana practices a “multifaceted” foreign policy but is also firmly committed to developing a strategic partnership and allied relations with Russia, according to Tokayev. He described Russian President Vladimir Putin as “an experienced statesman” who “understands the specifics of Kazakhstan” and also mentioned that the two countries share the longest continuous land border in the world.

Tokayev has brought up Russia’s military invincibility before. At a meeting of the Astana Think Tank Forum in October, the Kazakh leader said he had shared this view with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

“Russia is militarily invincible. This is a fact confirmed by Russia’s military potential, the support of the country’s population for President Putin’s policies, and by history itself,” Tokayev said at the time.
