Aston Villa 'target Mauricio Pochettino to replace under-pressure Steven Gerrard' as mood turns against former Rangers manager following dire start to the season which has left them just one point above the relegation zone
Aston Villa's hierarchy has reportedly identified Mauricio Pochettino as a candidate to replace the increasingly under pressure Steven Gerrard as the club's manager.
Gerrard has found himself under the pump this season with the mood among Villa fans having turned against him after a poor start that sees the club lie 16th in the league, a point off the drop zone.
Rather worryingly for Gerrard, moves are already afoot at Villa in identifying his replacement, according to The Telegraph, as the club look to move swiftly should they be called into action this week with games against Fulham at Craven Cottage and Brentford at home to come.
The Telegraph reports that Villa, who recorded their fifth loss of the season against Chelsea on Sunday, are likely to move to sack Gerrard even if they beat Fulham but fail to overcome Brentford.
Pochettino is said to be the number one target among a four-strong group that will lead the process of finding Gerrard's potential replacement.
Upon the appointment of Gerrard in November last year, after the club rather surprisingly parted ways with Dean Smith, Christian Purslow spoke of the expectations co-owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens had for Villa moving forward.
'The mantra of that [five-year] plan is that we must be improving. Improving our performances, improving our results, improving our finishing position,' he said.
'We’re just over three years into that journey, and I think Steven’s arrival will reignite the club, push us forward.'
Even the biggest Gerrard acolyte would struggle to make the case for the former Rangers manager as having delivered on what Purslow said the club's aims were when he took the job.
Indeed, Gerrard has struggled at times to find balance in his side, rarely settling on a team that gets the best out of array of attacking talent on offer to him and his staff.
Philippe Coutinho, signed to great expense and excitement, has failed to deliver on his early promise while Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins appear incapable of playing together.
Sunday's loss at home to Chelsea brought yet more jeers and boos from the Villa faithful in the direction of Gerrard with the mood having changed dramatically.
Reports state that other candidates - including Thomas Tuchel, who is out of work after losing his job at Chelsea and former Arsenal manager Unai Emery, who is in charge at Villarreal - could also be sounded out should the ambitious move to secure Pochettino fail.
