The newly installed machines will increase the authority’s accuracy in collecting cargo information as well as increase government’s revenues.
The head of Tanga port, Henry Arika, said in a press statement that the port remained a key economic gateway, adding that major improvements would continue to be done on it to enable it contribute to the country’s economy.
He said that in order to carry out its mission, various projects have been implemented, including short-term ones that involves purchasing of equipment and long-term ones such as construction of container storage areas as well as improving the cargo and ship servicing gate.
“We have completed construction of modern weight and measure machines, which have already started working since last month,” he said, adding that more modern scanners would be installed at the port.
According to Arika, the decision to install modern machines was reached so as to meet the required international standards which require all ports in the world to weigh every container before its shipment.
The newly deployed weigh and measure machines have a capacity to weigh up to 100 tonnes of cargo.
Funded by the Chinese government, the project started in June, this year, and will be completed in May 2017.
“The machines have a capacity to measure and scan 30 containers per hour... with the completion of the project and the other CCTV installation, the upgrade will help to strengthen safety and security at the port,” he said.
He said the Tanga port had the capacity to serve 700,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
He also urged the government to put more efforts in improving the central railway in order to enable the port to provide cheap and quick services to other parts of the country including northern regions, the Lake Zone and neighbouring countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Congo and South Sudan.
