Tanzania's annual inflation rate rose to 12.7 percent in October from 12.1 percent the previous month, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a report on Sunday.
It said annual food inflation had increased to 18.1 percent in October from 17.3 percent in September, while nonfood inflation stood at 4.4 percent from 4.0 percent. NBS said the monthly headline inflation rate for October rose 1.1 percent.
"The increase under consideration was highly attributed to the increase of food prices by 1.6 percent," it said.
"Food items that contributed to such price increase were cereals, cassava, potatoes, cooking bananas, fruits, fish, beans, cowpeas, groundnuts and coconut."
It said nonfood items that had also increased in price included tobacco as well as household operation and maintenance.
Like East African neighbours Uganda and Kenya, Tanzania has experienced double-digit inflation since last year due to higher commodity prices.
Tanzania's annual inflation rate crossed into double digits in September 2008 for the first time in nearly 10 years.
