Tanzania is proving to be a liability in EA integration

Tangu lini tajiri akambembeleza masikini washirikiane? Ilitakiwa sisi masikini ndio tuwabembeleze wao.

Tanzania haihitaji Kenya au Uganda ili kuendelea ,mtu yeyote mwenye akili ataona Tanzania iko mahala pazuri kupata maendeleo makubwa ukilinganisha na nchi zingine, tunachohitaji tu ni kuboresha serikali yetu na mambo mengine machache we will get to the finish line faster than kenyans or ugandans

haha eti wanwawake zetu.. The truth nikwamba EA intergration is a foolihs idea. Kwanza, economically kuna gaps.. Tanzania hatuko properly organised, infrastructure yetu mbovu.. elimu wakenya wametuzidi.. or so it appears. Land ownership ni tatizo... watakuja kugrab mashamba yetu huku na mapori ambayo sis hatuna akili yakuyatumia hadi sasa.. Kumbukeni, Kenya hakuna madini yoyote lakini their economy is 10billion dollars above ours.. Waingereza walijenga agroecnomy nzuri kwasababu they knew they were there to stay.Kenya was their property, kama vile Nothern Ireland or the Falklands... Tanzania was a protectorate and the key interest was to exploit more than anything...

Nchi nyingine kama Uganda ziko katika vita and internal rebellion..Hakuna amani, same for Rwanda.. nchi inayoendeshwa kwa kutumia majeshi. incursions into COngo.. wea i dnt even need to speak about.. Kenya tuu wenyewe wanachukiana.. Ukiwapa jirani wataungana kutupiga vita sisi rather than mkamba kumchukia mkikuyu...

IN short hatutaki... we are the blessed ones here... Acheni tujijenge taratibu.. hatuna chakugain from this labda mabasi hayata simama kuchekiwa passport...

Ukichukua NAFTA, US inazaidia Mexico kiuchumi.

Fikra zangu zinanirudisha mbali nikiwa kwenye halaiki tukiwa tunaimba ule wimbo maarufu yenye Uzalendo uliotukuka...

Uganda asked to re-think EAC deal

Kampala

Uganda could emerge the biggest loser in the second integration of East African community if it does not position itself well to take advantage of the current discussions, an official negotiating the East African Community common market has said.

Mr Walusimbi said this while presenting a paper on challenges of the East African Integration to participants at the 13th annual Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU) Seminar in Entebbe, on October 22.

Mr George Walusimbi, the Chief Executive Officer of Uganda Services Exporters’ Association who also represents Uganda on the high level task force negotiating the East African community common market said Uganda needs to appreciate what it wants to get from the community before signing the final agreement.

The complete formation of the East African Community is set to be attained in 2013 and there after, a political federation. Uganda’s agenda in the re-integration has tended to be more politically than economically inclined.

“Uganda needs to rethink its strategy, (since) in the long term it has the most to benefit from the economic dividends of this integration,” he said. He added that the Private sector in Tanzania thinks more than the political side and that could explain why the second headquarter of the bloc is coming up in Arusha.

For all those years ever since they(KIKUYUZ) via NJONJO walipovunja the Real East African Community, we have survived as a nation through hard times and good times. Kama kweli Warigi anoana kuwa we are "dirt poor" as he calls us , What is the big deal, waendelee na Museveni na Kagame, ilimradi wasije chinjana kama South Africa.

Warigi aseme tu wazi , ARDHI is the ISSUE here. Its not the bloody integration. Wanyarwanda wanachopigania hakieleweki eti Wengine ni wahutu wengine watusi, Waganda nao Baganad nad the rest ,Kenya its a hell lot of a mess. Kikuyu attitudes are all over. Yule Bwana Mdogo press secretary wa kibaki aliwahi kumuita Obama jus a Junior Senator from the US , Obama alipowapasha kuhusu Rushwa inchini humo , Leo eti wana-declare Public hliday kusherekea Ushindi wake. As long as some of us we will still be alive. Federation/FEDERO/ Community ni ujinga ambao tutaupiga vita milele especially if it seeks to give free access to our land to KENYANS

Mpendakwao,

hapa umesema vizuri kabisa! ni kweli wakenya wanachofuata ni ardhi tu na pengine ajira. kama uchumi wa Tanzania kama anavyosema huyo mungiki ni fraction of Kenya's econony, and if Tanzania is 'dirt poor' then, what the hell do they want with us? why do they want to push us so quicky? I commend all those Tanzanians in the negotiation team for standing firm and defending our position. I promise you, tukiingia kichwa kichwa, the same mungikis will be laughing at us kwamba sisi ni slow wa kufikiri na ndio maana tumesign bila kutafakari. Bravo Tanzanian team!

What makes Kenya so pushy towards Tanzania and noisier on this integration than other partners in East Africa? Has Kenya forgotten that they teared down the then EAC and celebrated heavily for "that acheivement?" What makes the current EAC integration more attractive than the one they smashed into pieces 30 years ago?

Here is my message to all pushy Kenyans dreaming of another easy ride on the so called "EAC integration:"

Keep your Kenya and we will keep our Tanzania: period.

Excuse me...who are you to even suggest that I have no idea? Give a break! I know what I know and I am simply calling "a spade a spade"! I have no hidden agenda other than to protect my country and what is rightfully Tanzanian.

Maybe we should ask who you really are...are you really a Tanzanian? Fear spreading? Where were you when the Hutu/Tutsi genocide took place? Would you like that to happen in Tanzania? Because it's already started in Kabila's country (started with a simple immigrant occupying land in Congo, and look what's happenign now...), and it could happen in Tanzania!

If you are a Kenyan, Ugandan or some other person other than a Tanzanian, then I might understand, but don't tell me that our land will be safe when we all come together as one big happy family!

Kuna jamaa nimewahi kuonana nae LA ana demu wa ki-Kenya, inawezekana ndo mshikaji....si unajua tena kumpigia chapuo missus!!

I think PEOPLE LIKE YOU are immature and somewhat reduntant to Tanzania. You are clearly not a Tanzanian! You must be from Kisumu, Kericho or whatever, so my advise to you is...Get yourself a life!

Nimekwambia jamaa ana demu wa ki-Kenya ndio maana sound nyingi!

Plan to Integrate Bourses Despite Hesitant Tanzania
By: Charles Wachira
Despite Tanzania’s resistance to cross-border investment, a position that contradicts the East African Community Customs Management Act, plans are going ahead to integrate the three major bourses within the region, namely the Dar es Salaam stock exchange, the Nairobi stock exchange and the Uganda securities exchange, plus the stock exchange in Burundi.

The act stipulates that residents of the original East African Community (EAC) states -- Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda – should treat each other’s nationals as locals when it comes to investment opportunities in their respective countries.

Contrary to the act, the Tanzanian government barred non-citizens from participating in the initial public offer (IPO) when it sold its 21 percent stake in the National Microfinance Bank (NMB) this August. When Safaricom, a Kenyan mobile telephone provider and east Africa’s most profitable company, issued its IPO this March, Tanzania blocked its own citizens from participating in the investment.

However, when Stanbic Uganda, a subsidiary of South Africa’s Standard Bank Group, offered its IPO in January 2007 Tanzanian and Kenyan nationals, including non-East Africans, took part.

‘‘When you are small, you need to keep all the wealth in the country. That must be why Tanzania decided to lock out foreigners in IPOs taking place in their country,’’ says James Murigu, a director of Suntra Investment Bank, a leading Kenyan firm. Chris Mwebesa, outgoing CEO of the Nairobi stock exchange, believes the new initiative will not be hindered by the foreign exchange regimes in individual countries. His opposite number in Tanzania, Jonathan Njau, tends to agree.

‘‘The restrictions put forth by the Tanzanian government are political.'' But, reveals Njau, the Tanzanian government is considering ''liberalising its market so that Tanzanians could freely invest in other countries in the near future''.

According to Simon Rutega, chief executive officer of the Uganda Securities Exchange, Uganda fully supports the proposed integration of stock markets in east Africa. According to the privately owned Monitor newspaper of Uganda, the initiative should be backed by all three the east African countries.

Early this September honchos from east Africa’s capital market authorities held a consultative meeting here in Nairobi which was attended by chief executives of the Burundi, Tanzanian, Kenyan and Ugandan stock exchanges.

The meeting proposed integration of the trading platforms of the four exchanges and agreed to adopt software that will link all stock brokers across the region. Under the new initiative, whose implementation deadline has been set for this December, securities will be traded anywhere in the region, using the local currency.

Rutega believes that the initiative will ‘‘demystify’’ cross-border investment across the region, encourage more co-operation and investment and expedite the economic integration agenda of the east African region.

According to Mwebesa, who also doubles as the head of the East African Stock Exchange Association (EASE), the project implementation will take less than six months.

‘‘The integration of the exchanges will benefit the east African region through consolidation of market liquidity and increasing visibility of the East Africa Community’s capital markets to foreign investors, hence attracting capital flows,’’ says Mwebesa.

Rutega argues that it would ‘‘increase economies of scale and reduce the costs of managing the trading, clearing and settlement infrastructure of the bourses in the region. When our markets integrate, we shall be able to share licences and the maintenance costs of information technology hardware. Investors will also have more financial instruments at their disposal to invest across the region’’.

Consultancy firm Ernst and Young in a recent study proposed that integration of the regional stock exchanges will be effective if there is a fair degree of regional economic integration. This includes the harmonisation of financial rules and regulations among the countries.

According to Ernst and Young, the bourses would need a common business language, culture and legal systems and excellent communications and technology solutions to integrate. An obstacle would be the fact that Uganda and Kenya have different operational methods. The latter relies on an electronic central depository system while the former relies on physical share certificates to carry out transactions.

Bourses also need to have internationally acceptable rules and regulations regarding capital adequacy, listing standards, insider trading and sound trading infrastructure. Another key requirement would be that individual stock exchanges be restructured and converted from mutual entities to profit companies.

‘‘Regional governments should harmonise the regional capital account convertibility, the regional clearing and settlement systems, taxes and the legal and regulatory framework within the region,’’ Ernst and Young states in its report. For now the integration of the region’s stock exchanges remains a work in progress.
