Tanzania rebased it's economy and it's only grew by 3.8%

Yes Ethiopia is more public investment driven - and I think if they don't start the private sector engine - that growth maybe flatter. Kenya has managed to grow recently thanks to public investment - private sector use to give us the 4% - I think extra 2% - is from public investment - as our economy seem to have settled on 6% growth rate. That 2% is coming from big projects like SGR and all the constructions of roads, power and such.

Anyway Kenya and Ethiopia are kind of the polar end. Kenya need to accelerate public investment - and - this can only happen through Chinese model - where China never really give us money but pay the contractor - otherwise corruption will kill everything - and Ethiopia need to open the economy for private investment.

Stano, ethiopia is starting from a very low base,i think it make sense for their figures, though their growth is gvernment driven which is pouring billions of dollars in infrastructure, thats very risky, what i love about kenya is its robust private sector which is the one that always drives growth, without our private sector we are doomed.

TZ has now rebased its economy twice in under 5 years, normally countries wait for like 10 years .. Whats going on?

So you think consumers of any stats are not intelligent enough to tell what is credible or not. Dr Ndii has been churning his stats - nobody has a problem with him - except when he engages in tribal baiting - which isn't protected speech but hate speech.

We know why Magufuli enacted the law - some research org found out Tanzania were sleeping hungry despite denial from gov. I mean it alarmed even the World Bank - enough for them to threaten sanctions.

If you're not paid by Magufuli to spew propaganda then I hope you're his girlfriend because there is really no logical explanation why one would suspend reasoning like that.
There is no government anywhere that allows NGOs and other fly by night conmen to report economic data as "official"
If you have read the law you would know what it says, it does not prohibit anyone from carrying out their own research, the felony is reporting such purpoted data as official data.
Its actually a very good way of ensuring that some of these NGO'S who are unelected, do not represent intrests of the people but intrests if their donors do not undermine the country.
NGO's my friend are not your friends, they are in "business".
Thats why even GoK in 2017 was cracking down on civil society who had sided with NASA instead of being a neutral party that does not engange in politics

Stano,if we persist with the current war on graft consistently,it will subdue curruption cartels and barons, the political will is there for the first time in our history, this i can assure has sent shock waves across the corrupt elite, this war will be painful and consequences will be disastrious, the property market which was one of the highest beneficially of graft is slowing down, especially high end properties, high end consumer products are feeling the heat too,my friend who operates a clothing line in the CBD is telling me bussiness is bad...anyways this are short term effects but the long term effects will be sweet, proper utilisation of public resources will be felt by a wider base as public expenditure trickles down to everybody.

People need to hold their horses! What it means over here is the 2014 rebase did not accurate capture informal sector a thing that required a repeat of the exercise as the prior rebase excercise understated the true size of overall gdp!

what a shitty explanation?? even after capturing the informal sector the difference is negligible!

Geza ulole, much of your informal economy is not taxable, how do you tax vibanda vya chips mayai?.....

No no big no, the rebase is normally done inside the rotation of 5 years. Our first one was 1964. The current one involves the inclusion of service and supporting sectors in the national account.

I think maybe Ghana and now Tanzania are managing the recommended 5yrs. The issues of course if the availability of data. US and developed world have more data - some do have census or major household surveys every 5yrs. I think for Africa - they should try to do 10yrs including a census within that period - 5yrs is a bit desperate if you ask me. Ghana seem desperate to get out it's debt trap and are aggressively rebasing.

Yes the current war against graft will help manage corruption that was getting out of hand but I don't know how far it will go - before as usual - it's stops when it touches sacred cows. That is always how it's starts. I saw how they killed Ruaraka land probe when it touched Matiangi and I am doubtful - about the seriousness of this draft. EACC file on Ruaraka is probably lost by now.

When Uhuru send his brother or sister or cousin or uncle or close friends to jail - then I'll know we are finally serious. But this is kenya - Moi did this for like 15yrs - he would promise IMF, WB & world he'll fight graft - get some money - do the usual cosmetic and go back to stealing. I don't think Kenya has changed a bit. Our political class are very crafty.

A decade is too MUCH, a lot of changes may occur, as a result we could miss a track of how things should be.

The problem is of course having credible enough data to re-base.Are you willing to do Census or such kind of national survey every 5yrs? Kenya are spending 200M dollars for their census this year - Nigeria skipped theirs in 2006 unable to afford. I am not sure about TZ census - it appears there it every decade except when there was huge gap btw 88 & 02.

Census vs rebasing.
We do rebasing in unpredetamined intervals fashion. But Census is inside the interval of a decade.

Have you read the law or are you just getting your info from media?
How would you react if david ndii came with figures other than those from KNBS? You may diasgree with his analysis but he strictly uses KNBS data
The law simply states that GoT is the only source of government statistics and any other entity that purpots to issue statistics and claim that they are official data from the economy are commiting a felony
Siku hizi umekubali wewe ni mtanzania?

Why all this sarcasm? Unaposema "looks like THEY are not going to overtake Kenya" kunanifanya niamini kabisa hakuna uzalendo katika fikra zako. Kama juhudi hizo zitafanya tuipiku Kenya, well and good. Lakini lengo letu si kuipiku Kenya bali kuleta maendeleo.
I guess you are new on JF. You need to see the number of threads started by Tanzanians making comparisons with Kenya, zingine hadi za kejeli. Look at both sides of the coin

Sisi tumewakasirisha mabeberu ndiyo maana uchumi wetu haupandi!
