I disagree with the young MP on his remarks, it is certainly a speech meant to rouse the crowd and gather cheap political points. I do agree with him that we need to get rid of illegal workers. A lot of the hawkers in gikomba from other east african countries do not have work permits, yet as Kenyans we are not allowed the same in neighbouring countries. The non east africans on the other hand should completely be banned from these sectors. We should get rid of all illegal immigrants. Where I live there is a lot of construction going on and I know about 20 burundi nationals who do not have a work permit, yet they work as masons in construction sites. Ugandans and Rwandans get work permits without the charges because of a protocol signed by the three countries in 2015. Tanzanians and Burundi nationals have to pay a fee to get work permits but they do not instead a lot of them have used the eac system to get into kenya and start competing with kenyans on menial jobs like farm hands, hawking, night guards etc. No country can allow this and i highly doubt that even Tanzania can accept this.

I agree with you on the aspect of checking illegal workers.

However, I disagree with you on banning non-East Africans from any sectors. Instead we should better regulate the sectors by giving priority to East Africans in sectors where we have the human and technological capacity to do so. Otherwise, let's be pro-active in equipping our people to be competitive and innovative. We should also invest in securing IP rights for every technology, innovation and creation by our people. In short, if we become inward looking we limit our perspectives, opportunities and it's a never ending 'cancer'. We will close off the world from EA, then countries will close off their borders, then regions...slippery slope. We should just be smart on how we engage the world and how we position ourselves on the world map.

I agree 100% with your sentiments, this was envisioned in the Free movement of labor protocol but so far only Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda have signed that is why ugandans and rwandans do not pay any work permit fees to work in Kenya.

I agree with you that sometimes our countries have been taking too long to arrive at constructive conclusion, let alone put them into practise. However, we need as citizens to continue advising and pushing our politicians to make the right decisions, and timely ones too. It's also important to note that albeit all this lagging, citizens of all EA countries still find ways to engage, trade and invest, through the limited opportunities currently available. We should not allow divisive and short-sighted people, no matter who they are, pull as back even further.
