US-based Symbion Power LLC, is currently looking for partners in the construction of a $1.3 billion (about Sh2.7 trillion) power plant in Mtwara that will see Tanzania exporting electricity to a number of countries in the region.

Speaking after attending the Powering Africa conference on Friday, the Symbion chief executive officer, Mr Paul Hinks said the envisaged gas-powered plant will produce 600 MW.

He said the project is set to begin in 2017.

"Under this major power project, Tanzania is set to export electricity to the neighbouring countries of Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Burundi and Rwanda. It will be the biggest gas-powered plant in the region," he said.

He said the project funded by the US government will be undertaken in two phases. The first phase will entail construction of a 400MW gas-powered plant while the remaining 200MW will be made available under the second phase.

"We are currently discussing with potential partners to develop the power plant. Next year will be a busy year for soliciting project partners," he said.

The deputy managing director for Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco), Mr Declan Mhaiki, said such a project was intended to establish a strong business in electricity exports that will see Tanzania earning foreign currency through trading in electricity.

He said upon completion of the project, shortage of electricity will be a thing of the past in Tanzania.

"This project is very good for our economy as we expect to export electricity in large quantities to neignbouring countries….we will be able to earn substantially in foreign exchange," he stressed.

Speaking during the conference a number of international investors were optimistic that the country has huge investment opportunities in the energy sector. They said Tanzania possesses almost all sources of energy, ranging from renewable and non-renewable options.

The non-renewable sources include biomass, natural gas, coal, hydro-power and nuclear power, while the renewable sources include solar, geothermal and wind energy.

Vichekesho kweli...

Daah ngoja tuone

Mkuu hizi data zako sijui umezitoa wapi!

Watu wengi hawafaham by end of 2016, Tanzania itakuwa na uwezo wa kuzalisha 4000MW, ambazo zitakuwa n nyingi kuliko matumizi yetu!

Juzi Ethiopia wamezindua power plant yenye uwezo wa kuzalisha more than 3000MW wewe unaongea kuhusu 600MW as the biggest in Africa? Umelogwa?

Biggest GAS fired plant in the REGION.

Hesabu zako hazijakaa sawa.

Am everyday day supprised to hear about exportation za services kama power nk. morover hatujaeza kujitosheleza cc wenyewe.
Huku morogoro umeme unapotoka tuko gizani tangu jana.

Hapo ndo uone hii nchi inavyotaka kudhulumiwa.

It might be true to "...earn substantially..." but there is a dire need to ensure that these resources are also SUBSTANTIALLY forwarded towards Uchumi wa Wananchi,Watanzania ikiipa kipaumbele uzalendo.

To "earn substantially..." is not enough.

Tanzania ni ajabu la kumi duniani! Sifa tu kazi dorooooo.....hapakazitu nayo ikiishiwa pumzi basi tena maana hata upinzani unajichanganya na katiba ya Warioba kaiuza wamenywea chibuku. Waziri wa Umeme naye Jana aliongea amekata tamaa siyo ninavyomjua....kuna jambo linapikwa

Vp ule umeme tutakaoanza kununua Ethiopia soon

Hii nchi haiishi kwa maajabu!

Wengine wanawaza kuuza nje wengine wanaza kununua toka nje.

cc Mzee Mwanakijiji
