Symbion Power is investing USD 900 million in a new 600MW gas fired power plant in Mtwara region, it has been revealed.
In an interview with The Guardian On Sunday this week, the Symbion Power Chief Executive Officer, Paul Hinks said the company was also investing in a 600kilometres, 400kV transmission line in partnership with the Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco).
Hinks said once completed, the project will allow the entire southern region to have access to power, which they haven’t had before.
“Feasibility studies have been completed and we are now moving to the next stages of project development," he explained.
Since Tanzania has embraced President Obama’s Power Africa initiative, the company was sure of having significant new development over the next two to three years as a result of this program, he said.
Already Symbion Power has completed projects for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) who have invested about USD800 million dollars in Tanzania.
“We constructed 2,000 kms of distribution lines and 26 substations and this infrastructure is providing new power to people all over the country,” he explained.
The CEO explained that already the completed project has had a massive positive effect, along with other TANESCO and Rural Electrification Agency (REA) investments.
As a result, ‘access to electricity' statistics have jumped from about 14 percent to now more than 35 percent.
“This is a great achievement by the government and provides hope to many people,” the top company operator enthused.
Regarding Tanzania ending rampant power cuts, the CEO said that realistically it will take some time for Tanzania to be completely free of power shortages.
“But from everything we see now, the Ministry of Energy, TANESCO and REA are moving rapidly to a point where regular power rationing will soon be a thing of the past," he declared.
He however indicated willingness to invest more in the country, saying Symbion and other power companies from the United States are ready to invest large amounts of money in Tanzania because they have confidence in its future.
“Like everywhere, there are challenges, but we have never been deterred in expanding our business operations and investing more money.
I think President Obama’s initiative will eventually become the major focus for power development in Tanzania and I’m honored that we are a part of it,” the buoyant investor added.
