PRESIDENT Dr.John Magufuli will today launch new Tanzanian electronic passport in an event to be held at Immigration head quarters in Dar es Salaam
Speaking to Azania post, the Immigration department spokesman Ali Mtanda, said the new e-passport is part of new system which would now be used by many countries in East African region.
The launch will be witnessed by President of Revolutionary government of Zanzibar, Dr Ali Mohammed Shein, retired presidents Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Benjamin Mkapa and Jakaya Kikwete and other senior leaders.
The new passport will come with tamper proof electronic features and help the government end misuse or fraud associated with the current manual passport issuance system.
According to the Minister for Home Affairs, Dr Mwigulu Nchemba the new passport will exclude all people who have been using illegal means to obtain Tanzanian identification.
He said there are people who have been arrested in various countries doing illegal activities, who claim to be Tanzanians ones arrested by security organs.
“….but when they are checked, they are found with Tanzanian passports. But later we realise that they got such documents illegally and sometimes they do not even belong here,” he explained.
Dr. Nchemba said the use of new technology in issuing passports is expected to seal all gaps that have been used by culprits to obtain illegal passports.
