Tanzania’s agriculture minister tells WFP to either comply with maize price or shut down centres

Tanzania's Agriculture Minister, Hussein Bashe, has directed the World Food Program (WFP) to purchase maize directly from Tanzanian farmers at the government-approved price of Sh700 per kilogram. If the WFP does not comply, they must shut down their procurement centers. This directive aims to ensure fair compensation for farmers and prevent them from selling their maize at lower prices to private buyers.

Minister Bashe emphasized that buying maize below Sh500, per kilogram violates the agreement with the government.

He also criticized private buyers for exploiting farmers by purchasing maize cheaply and reselling it at a profit.

Do you think this move will help improve the situation for Tanzanian farmers?
