On October 14, 2024, Dr. Tulia Ackson, the President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and Speaker of the Parliament of the United Republic of Tanzania, officially opened the 149th General Assembly of the IPU at the International Conference Centre (CICG) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The gathering, themed Harnessing Science, Technology, and Innovation for a Future of Peace and Sustainability, drew around 1,500 participants, including Speakers, Deputy Speakers, Heads of Delegations, and Members of Parliament from various nations.

While some Afro Centric praised Dr. Ackson's leadership, her recent outburst has left many with an unsettling feeling. A figure of her caliber shouldn’t feel compelled to fight tooth and nail to defend herself; sometimes, it’s better to let the rule book speak for itself.
By rushing to her own defense, she risked treading on thin ice, potentially lowering the standard expected of her position. Phrases like "Do not crucify me" seem out of place for someone of her stature.
She was literally using a sledgehammer to crack a nut when a simple explanation would suffice. Her emotions was allover the place
Her comments, such as "Some of you might think I'm from a country that was once your colony, and you may assume we are still mentally colonized, have been hailed by many as bold, yet they appeared to carry more heat than light.
Raising one’s voice in such a prestigious setting is like pouring fuel on a fire.
Leaders should reserve their raised voices for moments when someone truly oversteps their bounds, not during the process of laying out their argument.
For a leader with her position, she should have kept her composure.
Although it was evident she had the facts at her fingertips, her panic revealed a crack in her confidence.
When leaders like Mwalimu Nyerere faced colonial powers, he responded with a calm resolve, leaving a lasting impression. It’s possible to draw from that well of wisdom and respond with strength and calm, avoiding unnecessary theatrics while keeping the message sharp and clear.
Her emotional breakdown has made many people to wonder: was Dr. Tulia Ackson's meltdown at the IPU meeting legitimate and justifiable?
