Johannesburg has like 1.5 million people.
Cape Town has like 1 million people.

The numbers you've given for both are for their metro areas.

If you did the same for Nairobi, you would find that the population of Nairobi metro is over 9 million.

I subscribe to the idea of having the moderate population that is well nurtured. Having huge number of people that can't feed themselves is a serious burden to the economic prosperity of a country. The reason why nordic countries are rated the best in terms of health services, is because, among other things, they have a maneagiable population.
Off at a tangent, the GDP you have indicated in your post is nothing but a serious joke that should go unanswered.
