[h=4]City are returning to Portugal as our quest for a first European trophy in 42 years continues. This time the Blues are heading for the beautiful capital to take on Sporting Lisbon.[/h] There is plenty to see and do in this vibrant and historic city, and the Foreign Office have issued a series of reminders for fans who be following the Blues and spending some time there around the game, with these main points:
As a EU national you don't need a visa to travel to Portugal, but your passport should be valid for the period of your stay.
You should be able to show some form of identification if requested by the police or judicial authorities. For UK nationals, this means a passport. This requirement is rigorously enforced if you are driving. In all other cases, it should be sufficient to carry a photocopy of the data page of the passport, but be prepared to produce the original document, if asked to do so. You are in any case advised to keep a photocopy of the data page separate from the original.
If you lose your passport, you can be issued with an emergency travel document, subject to background checks and confirmation of ID. This is valid only for the purpose of your return journey home. It costs €119 (approx £95).
Make sure you obtain a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before leaving the UK. This will entitle you to emergency medical treatment in Portugal. It doesn’t cover medical repatriation, on-going medical treatment or treatment of a non-urgent nature so you are therefore advised to take out travel insurance, even if you’re only coming for one night.
The best way of moving around Lisbon is the Metro, with Sporting's stadium located at the Campo Grande station on the Yellow and Green lines. If you intend to use the Metro, remember to buy a ticket on entry and keep it until the end of your journey as you will need it to exit the station through electronic barriers.
Access to the stadium will be slow. The police and/or stewards will carry out ticket checks and body searches at the entrance to the turnstiles. To avoid a last minute bottleneck, get to the stadium in good time.
No alcohol, sharp objects (including umbrellas), fireworks or flares, bottles or cans, drums or video cameras in the stadium. Flags are allowed but must not be on poles over a metre long. Coins are permitted.
Anyone who appears to be too drunk can be refused entry to the stadium for safety reasons. The Portuguese police can ask you to take a breathalyzer test as proof of this.
Visiting supporters are usually asked to stay behind for up to 30 minutes after the game has finished so be prepared for delays leaving the stadium.
Beware of pickpockets, especially on public transport, and in the immediate vicinity of the stadium. Thieves commonly use diversion tactics so keep an eye on your valuables at all times.
There is no time difference between the UK and Portugal.
