ONE of the greatest puzzles in my life is the Nobel Committee pretending that the late Julius K. Nyerere, founding President of the United Republic of Tanzania, never existed.
I do not have qualifications to nominate Nyerere for the most prestigious award on earth. Even then I will not fold my hands and sit transfixed as if everything is fine.
I can write at least. I hope that this note will trigger his nomination process. It is therefore inevitable for me to exhume the extraordinary life and time of Julius Nyerere.
Julius Kambarage Nyerere was born in March 1922 and educated at Tabora School, Makerere College and Edinburg University. In 1960 Nyerere was leader of the opposition in what was still the Trusteeship Territory of Tanganyika. He went to the United Nations several times as a petitioner to pressurize the British to grant Tanganyika independence.
Tanganyika became independent in 1961. Nyerere abolished racial segregations in all sectors. Tanzania had over 120 tribes as well as racial minorities like Asians, Arabs and Europeans. He created a nation free from tribal loyalties with Kiswahili as its national language. To be sure, Nyerere himself a Catholic, left a Muslim as President of Tanzania. Government officials were from all spectra of life. One of his Prime Ministers was from the nomadic Maasai community. By any standard this is no small triumph.

The Nobel Prize is not awarded posthumously. For the award's FAQ see http://nobelprize.org/contact/faq/index.html

Is it possible to nominate someone for a posthumous Nobel Prize?

No, it is not. Previously, a person could be awarded a prize posthumously if he/she had already been nominated (before February 1 of the same year), which was true of Erik Axel Karlfeldt (Nobel Prize in Literature 1931) and Dag Hammarskjöld (Nobel Peace Prize, 1961). Effective from 1974, the prize may only go to a deceased person to whom it was already awarded (usually in October) but who had died before he/she could receive the Prize on December 10 (William Vickrey, 1996 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economics in Memory of Alfred Nobel). See also par. 4 of the Statutes of the Nobel Foundation.

One life's work, if outstanding, will shine regardless of whether one is awarded a Nobel or not.Likewise, no matter how many awards a mediocre person is awarded, the mediocrity will prevail

Good idea Pal! I miss Mwalimu Nyerere, am saying this because of mismanagement and smell corruptions of this nation. He retired with one house, he went in grave standing before nation interests ,compared to our current presidents whom they own ten houses per term.

Thats what he got for being a communist..lol and besides the Nobel Committee does not do posthumous awards...

hivi muda mfupi tu wamesahau kila kitu, mbona sisi tunakumbuka?

Salehe Ndanda,
Hongera!
Naona umeanza kubeba mikoba ya Wahenga! Keep it up.

Shy,
You do not have to worry too much ab out any one forgetting Nyerere.
On July 4th,Nyerere will get another one of the posthumous medals, this time it will be a medal for ''helping in the freedom of Rwanda''. And I think also, another medal,''for assisting in the Liberation of Africa.'' The medals will be given to Mama Maria Nyerere.

Ganesh,

While on the question of honoring Mwalimu.

Much has been said about the canonization of Nyerere. The puzzling part is the man himself was legendary for his humility on the one hand (of "nyumba kubwa kwani mimi tembo?" fame, among many anecdotes) while reportedly devotedly religious on the other (never missing daily morning mass at St. Peters if in Dar). This begs the question, would he really have wanted all this canonization business?

I know you have some intimate knowledge on the subject, would you shed some light?

Hivi saa ngapi alikuwa anaongoza nchi? Naona alijikita kwenye kuandika vitabu tu!
Na nikiangalia vitabu:
Siasa ni kilimo - what the hell that is supposed to mean?
50 years on, what is happening with our kilimo?

Kilimo cha umwagiliaji maji - where did he practice that?
As a country, when JK was at helm, the population was barely 8 million people, and not even 25% of them had clean drinking water!
There are now over 40 million Tz-ans and majority of them NOT only do not have clean drinking water, they do not have reliable electricity!
How in hell, tell me, can you be prophecizing about kilimo cha umwagiliaji???
I can repeat same for mtu ni afya, ujamaa vijijini, uchumi wetu and so on! Stop following blindly own propaganda!
JKN brought this country to its knees, by experimenting on poor Tanzanians.
When he was out of options (when all else failed: vijiji vya ujamaa, arusha declaration, dodoma declaration, mashirika ya umma n.k.) he decided to resign in 1985, with Tanzania almost bankrupt, with meagre foreign reserves, and no serious source of internal income. He handed over power (partially) to Mwinyi, while clinging to Party Chairmanship which in other words, still in power and capable of dictating what was going on.
If all he said, did and wrote was RIGHT, why the hell we follow market economy and capitalism since 1985? Who consented that Tanzania should be a socialist country? Did JKN organize a referendum?
Stop repeating propaganda that you do not even know why and how it came into being!

Shy
Suppose (hypothetically) this applied to Nyerere:
What field do you suggest that he be given the Nobel Prize?
I know for sure that:
They do not honour failed policies: ujamaa na kujitegemea!
They do not honour supporters of insurgencies and leaders who have brought about the fall of other leaders : Biafra, Comorro islands
They do not honour one Party system dictators: TAA -TANU -CCM
They do not honour leaders who squandered economic opportunities e.g. received massive AID and nothing good came out of it: SIDA-(Mufindi paper factory), IDA - (Dodoma tiles factory) etc etcThey do not honour leaders who do not listen to expert advice and do not tolerate other opinions: Chief Fundikira, Kambona, Mtei etc etc

Take stock when we got independence and take stock in 1985, and NOW.
Do you see any positive trends in terms of: Basic facilities for masses?
NJAA, MARADHI, UJINGA, UMASIKINI?

All our leaders are lost, do not know what to do to get us out of poverty, Nyerere included!
To be fair on him, at least he did not think about himself! He was convinced, honestly, that he was fighting for our good, our country's good, NOT KNOWING, that his policies were DOOMED!!! That is a sad fact!
