The rise and fall of Colonel Muamar Gadaffi

Depleted uranium weapons (file photo)
Western coalition forces have been using depleted uranium in their airstrikes on crisis-hit Libya, says an expert, despite the forces' denial of using the highly-poisonous metal.

Conn Hallinan, a columnist with Foreign Policy in Focus, told Russia Today news network on Wednesday that after examining the impact wounds left on tanks in Libya, he is almost certain that depleted uranium is being utilized.

"Politically, it's a bad idea. Medically, it's an extremely bad idea. It's just one of those things that's an effective weapon that you have to step away from," he went on to say.

He added that given the amount of depleted uranium in the hands of Washington, the US military is going to only further saturate foreign battlefields with the toxic metal for years to come.

Depleted uranium has a half-life of 4.5 billion years and has thus earned the title "The silent killer........

Quarreling Over Libya Hits NATO

News | 13.04.2011 | 07:46 France and the U.K. called on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to more aggressively defend civilians, particularly in the besieged Libyan city of Misrata, from Col. Moammar Gadhafi's forces, but NATO officials said the allies were doing a good job and reported strikes in the area.
The signs of friction came on the eve of an international meeting of the so-called Libya contact group, which brings together Western and regional governments, in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday. Ministers from NATO countries are also scheduled to meet, on Thursday and Friday in Berlin.
On Tuesday, troops loyal to Col. Gadhafi pounded Misrata, in western Libya, with artillery and mortar rounds, and continued attempts to make incursions into the city, Libya's third-largest.
Ayman Abu Shahma, a doctor with the rebels, who have been in control of parts of the city since late February, said there were also clashes between rebels and government forces along a road leading to the port, the rebels' only outlet in the weekslong siege by Col. Gadhafi's troops.
French Foreign Minister Alain Juppé said Tuesday that NATO wasn't doing enough to stop Col. Gadhafi's forces from killing civilians in rebel areas. "NATO has to play its role in full," Mr. Juppé said.
After 42 years under Moammar Gadhafi's rule, it's hard to imagine what Libya could look like without the dictator in power. WSJ's Neil Hickey reports from Washington on the cloudy outlook for the north African nation.......

Suspicion has arisen around the British foreign office sending Mousa Kousa to the Libyan based crisis meeting in Doha, Qatar. This suspicion has arisen as Mousa Kousa is till believed to be working for Gaddafi and his involvement can only be to jeopardise talks against Gaddafi. This is based on the fact the Mousa Kousa’s family is still in Tajoora unharmed and living peacefully in Tripoli and also that his tribe is still fighting along side Gaddafi against Libyan citizens.......

Al Qaeda acquires weapons in Libya

11:51 • 05.04.11

Al Qaeda is exploiting the conflict in Libya to acquire weapons, including surface-to-air missiles, and smuggle them to a stronghold in northern Mali, Reuters reported, citing a senior security official in neighboring Algeria.

Western governments have demanded that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi step down after his forces cracked down on a revolt against his rule, but some governments in the region are nervous that al Qaeda could step into a power vacuum.

Algeria, which has been fighting al Qaeda's north African wing for years and closely monitors insurgent activity across north Africa and the Sahara, says there are already signs that this is happening.

Algeria's government has watched with concern as its eastern neighbors have been convulsed by popular uprisings, and is anxious that discontent over living conditions and limits on political freedoms could spark a similar revolt.

Security officials took the rare step of voicing their concerns about Libya to the foreign media because they are worried that events there could reverse their gains in keeping a lid on al Qaeda inside the country.

US officials said they were worried about reports of al Qaeda smuggling arms from Libya to Mali - and the State Department has raised its concerns with the Libyan opposition - but they could not immediately confirm such transfers.

The senior Algerian official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said a convoy of eight Toyota pick-up trucks left eastern Libya, crossed into Chad and then Niger, and from there into northern Mali where in the past few days it delivered a cargo of weapons.

The weapons included Russian-made RPG-7 anti-tank rocket-propelled grenades, Kalashnikov heavy machine guns, Kalashnikov rifles, explosives and ammunition, he said.

He also said he had information that Al Qaeda's north African wing, known as al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) had acquired from Libya Russian-made shoulder-fired Strela surface-to-air missiles known by the NATO designation SAM-7.

"We know that this is not the first convoy and that it is still ongoing," the official told Reuters.

"Several military barracks have been pillaged in this region (eastern Libya) with their arsenals and weapons stores and the elements of AQIM who were present could not have failed to profit from this opportunity."

"AQIM, which has maintained excellent relations with smugglers who used to cross Libya from all directions without the slightest difficulty, will probably give them the task of bringing it the weapons," said the official.

The official made no suggestion that the Libyan governemnt was supplying weapons to al Qaeda.

Renaissance Group (RNCG) fund manager Justin Farr-Jones flew to Tripoli last May with a British investment delegation that promised to give "unique access" to Libya's financial leadership.
The economy was opening up after Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown had both met Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi, whose son Saif completed a doctorate at the London School of Economics. Abdel Basset Al-Megrahi, the only person convicted of the 1988 bombing of Pan Am flight 103, was freed in 2009.
"It was actually a must-visit economy," said London-based Farr-Jones, whose firm focuses on emerging markets. "I really did feel that Libya was on the brink of reform."
A year later, all bets are off after fighting erupted in Libya. London-based oil company BP Plc (BP/) evacuated workers. U.K. Trade & Investment, a government export organization that last year said Libya was "potentially the fourth-most attractive overseas market," closed its office in Tripoli along...................

UK's ‘dirty secret' - selling arms to Libya months before war

London Britain sold weapons to Libya and other dictatorships in North Africa and the Middle East just four months before Muammar Gaddafi ordered a crackdown on a pro-democracy uprising in the country.

The Daily Mail quoted the report by MPs as saying that British ministers had approved export of sniper rifles, bullets, tear gas and other ‘crowd control' ammunition to Tripoli shortly before Gaddafi's regime started slaughtering hundreds of protesters in Libya.

The British government has approved £61.3 million in arms exports to Gaddafi since 2009, and export licences worth £2.3 billion to 16 states over a 21-month period....................................

Libya group agrees 'trust fund' for rebels
International contact group calls on Gaddafi to step down to "allow Libyan people to determine their own future".

The international contact group on Libya has agreed to set up a temporary "trust fund" to help the international community channel assets to the opposition Transitional National Council in Benghazi.

In a statement issued at the conclusion of Wednesday's one-day summit in Doha, Qatar, the group again called on Libya's longterm leader Muammar Gaddafi to step down.

Mkuu.
Thats how they make money.

Muzungu nachemsha bongo vizuri na anataka serikali itakayokuja iwe serikali cheka cheka.
Libyan have to buy democracy with their own money, on top of depleted uranium bombs!

Have your say: Libya

The Prime Minister, in Paris for talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, described the situation in the besieged city of Misrata as "appalling" and accused Colonel Gaddafi of deliberately ordering the murder of his own people.
Mr Cameron said: "Britain and France are at the heart of this coalition and with President Sarkozy I am going to be sitting down to make sure that we leave no stone unturned in doing everything we can militarily, diplomatically, politically to enforce the United Nations resolution, to put real pressure on Gaddafi, and to stop the appalling murder of civilians.
"It is appalling what Gaddafi is doing in Misrata. He is murdering his own citizens, including children. The orders come directly from him," he added.
Earlier the international contact group on Libya, holding its first meeting in the Gulf state of Qatar, backed calls for Gaddafi to step down, warning that his continued presence "would threaten any resolution of the crisis."
The group said: "There should be an inclusive political process so that the Libyan people can determine their own future."

West and US Mission shifted from protecting civilians , to side with "pro-democracy", "opposition",rebels and ultimately regime change!

BERLIN - NATO nations stressed Thursday that their common aim in Libya is to bring an end to Moammar Gadhafi's regime, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said the world must increase its support for the Libyan opposition.

France has said NATO isn't doing enough, and they and the British say Washington's military strength is needed to ensure the mission's success.

Clinton stressed that NATO members are "sharing the same goal, which is to see the end of the Gadhafi regime in Libya."

"For our part, the U.S. is committed to our shared mission," she told fellow ministers. "We will strongly support the coalition until our work is completed."

Disparate international response

While the rebels have made it clear that they will be crushed without NATO support, the international community is struggling to come up with a united approach.

The five so-called BRICS emerging powers - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - expressed misgivings about NATO air strikes after talks in China and urged an end to the two-month conflict.

Their criticism contrasted with the first joint call for Gaddafi's overthrow from a group of Middle Eastern and Western countries meeting in Qatar on Wednesday.

Cairo - Libyan television on Thursday broadcast footage of Muammar Gaddafi driving around Tripoli in an open-top sports utility vehicle and said the outing occurred while the Libyan capital was being bombed by Nato.

Wearing a green safari hat, dark glasses and a black jacket, state television showed Gaddafi pumping his fists in the air and waving.

A screen caption said the trip had taken place a short while ago, while the Libyan capital was under Nato air attack.

Gaddafi's finance chief fears regime may run out of cash

The Libyan government fears it may run out of funds within months if there is no quick resolution to the political and military crisis
, the regime's finance minister has told the Guardian.

Abdulhafid Zlitni said the government would double interest rates in the next week in an attempt to encourage citizens to stop hoarding money at home and deposit their cash in banks.

The decision to raise interest rates is one of a number of emergency measures taken by the regime in recent weeks, including the rationing of fuel, restricting cash withdrawals from banks, increasing public sector pay by 50% and doubling pensions.

More than 75% of the country's population lives in the western part of the country still controlled by Muammar Gaddafi's government, which, despite international sanctions, is still paying public sector salaries, pensions and state subsidies, according to Zlitni. "At the moment, we have no problem with paying salaries and pensions. Although the bills are heavy, we can pay them," he said.

China's interests in Gaddafi

Huge oil and financial deals play major part in Beijing's support for Libya's despot and halt to foreign intervention.

What a sight. Chinese president Hu Jintao pulling a vintage John Lennon performance in Beijing and telling self-styled Arab liberator and French neo-Napoleonic president Nicolas Sarkozy to "give peace a chance" in Libya.

The top four BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China) all abstained at the voting of UN Security Council Resolution 1973. In his subtle address to Sarkozy, Hu also implied his displeasure that the African Union, which was overwhelmingly against a foreign intervention in Libya, had their proposals totally sidelined by the West.

Only three days before UN Resolution 1973 was voted on, Gaddafi met with the ambassadors of BRICS members China, Russia and India, and told them, according to the JANA news agency: "We are ready to bring Chinese and Indian companies to replace Western ones." That may go a long way to explain the BRICS abstentions.

It would be tempting to see the Beijing leadership merrily watching Washington walk into another open-ended quagmire in a Muslim nation part of a Chinese grand strategy of letting the US be distracted in peripheral Muslim countries in the arc from northern Africa to Central Asia.
Beijing never really worried about a Western embargo on Libyan oil. Who would dare strike a tanker navigating under the Chinese flag?
What Beijing wanted was for the rebels to collapse, with Gaddafi back in charge of the whole country and no "regime change".

Now with a Libyan stalemate as the most possible scenario, Beijing is factoring its influence in the price of oil. Oil consumption in China is about 4 per cent of GDP. Each $10 increase in the price of a barrel dangerously increases that proportion by 0.4 per cent.

Then there's Washington's response to the AU via the Pentagon's Africom created by the Bush administration in late 2007, but now already in its first African war. Africom innocuously brands itself as "advising and training" military forces.

Only five African countries are not associated with Africom in some way among them Libya.

Africom holds the paltry record of coordinating a botched Ethiopian invasion of Somalia that ended up with a great deal of the country embracing the hardcore al-Shabab militia. Africom also war-gamed a full-scale conflict in the Gulf of Guinea. Angola, China's top oil supplier in Africa, happens to be in the Gulf of Guinea.

So no wonder the leitmotiv in the influential People's Daily is something like: "Libya has been attacked because of oil", with the corollary of this anti-China power play in Libya mirroring Western interference in Sudan.
